The Panasonic Leica 10-25mm F/1.7 is the lens I've been most excited about for a long time. For Micro Four Thirds, it's big, but it's multi-talented, fast, and could do several jobs for me, both in photography and video. Check out what I make of it...
Also a huge thank you to Lumix for sponsoring this video. I've been using the G9 and the G85 for a long time now and the stabilisation in them is immense. Find out more here: www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer....

Congrats on the wedding. I've been married for thirty years, and my wife tells me I it's the smartest thing I've ever done, she also says I'm very happy.
Does she also very helpfully, point out where you`re going wrong?
@@Damon777 Oh, yes she does, it's kinda her super power. LOL
They truly control the world lol

While I am an Olympus guy, and the pulldown focus ring is not new to me, your reactions are a hoot! Keep it up!
I'm from the Fujifilm village. They call that "Clutch focus mechanism" over here. It's a niche thing but it's always nice. Never get bored fiddling with it xD
Entertaining and informative as always - great job!
loved the way you imitated people saying "it's not a real 1.7..." And congratulation on getting married
Haha, thanks mate!
Why does watching your videos always end up costing me money - never mind - and congratulations.
haha, I do apologize Martha :)
Finally, waited so long for this review.
Congrats!
Thanks mate :)
I have manual clutch on my Oly 12-40 f2.8 it’s brilliant ,no menu needed to switch Af to manual focus 😄. Nice images from that new lens Emily
Not happy with the pull down manual focus on my 300mm F4 at all. Works fine but gets in the way always engaging it by accident.
You nailed on the pull back focus ring. After purchasing one I can not be without it!!
I shot with the 10-25 f/1.7 on a G9 last week and found it surprisingly light. Large for M43 yes but handling, performance and weight are solid.
Been loving my Lumix and your vids. I just got the sigma 16mm f1.4, and NOW I WANT MORE
The video I've been waiting for!
I really like your reasoning for how this lens could replace up to four others. All you might want is a Panasonic or Voigtlander 42.5, and a long tele zoom and you're set for anything. For me, this could replace the Pana 12-35, Oly 12, Oly 17, Oly 25 and maybe even the Voigtlander 25.
Your excitement over the focus clutch makes me so happy haha
I have the Olympus 17mm 1.8 lens and it has the pull-back focus ring and it is my favorite feature of any lens I own. It's is so fun to use, and it's really nice to have the ability to set the focus at a certain distance and leave it there.
So excited by that lens flicky thing! :D
The Olympus Pro 12-40 has the manual focus clutch on it, and it's a REALLY useful feature.
I've got to hold it and kind of used it at Cine Gear 2019, but how was the manual clutch for you? When I was using it, there was not hard stop like the Olympus lenses. Did your pre-production model have hard stops when rack focusing? Thanks@
Got gear envy now 🙂 I have the Olympus 12-40 that also have a pullback manual focus ring, and I love it.
Ahh i nearly bought that years ago mostly because of that! 😂👍🏻
James Popsys I have that too - the issue is it is in manual literally 95% of the time on my gh5. I am feeling confident that the 10-25 is going to give us the best possible autofocus scenario for the gh5
@@JamesPopsysPhoto almost all Oly have the clutch. First time I was like...the heck, now its like oooooh :D
Thanks James, my best lens since I got it last year. It's on my Olympus OMD EM1 Mk3 almost 100% of the time. Best m43 lens IMHO.
Another cracking video, James! Thank you!
IM 😎
You make a clear statement Fella! One lens instead 3, boom!!
I have the pull out focus ring on the lens I use most, Olympus's 12-100, and I love that functionality.
I think you forgot something very important. 1.7 on micro 4/3 is still 1.7 in terms of how much light goes into your camera, it only multiplies the depth of field. So if you are ditching a 1.4 lens, your are missing out on how much light you could possibly let in. Though, 1.7 is still more than enough light in the most shooting scenarios. Cheers from Switzerland :)
Did I forget? I thought I was talking about only depth of field? :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto yeah I know, but newbies don't know that there is more to aperture then just depth of field. Didn't mean to be rude though. ;-)
@moo you are talking nonsense... Go look it up. It's pure mathematics... The only difference is depth of field. In terms of measurement of light f1.7 is and will always be f1.7 please don't just say something because you heard it somewhere... There is more than enough evidence on the internet...
How do you rate the Panasonic leica 12 to 35 micro 4 thirds f2.8 lens........half the weight and cost
My Oly 12-40 has the pull back focus ring. I went a bit bananas one day when I couldn't get auto-focus to work, no matter how many settings I changed, set, double-checked, swore at... After about ten minutes I remembered... And congratulations to you and Emily!
I did that filming this! Not the last time I'm sure :)
I bet there's not a lot of who haven't had that experience when first using a lens with a pull back focus ring. I was completely perplexed and thought my camera had failed. Then, when you realize what happened, there's that, "what an idiot" moment.
As a mostly-indoor photographer, this is close to a system seller for me.
Joel Benford do u think 10mm is too tight for indoor? Im thinking to upgrade from 7-14 to 8-18 or this one.
@@jiraz It depends on your flavour of "indoors"... If you're a pro photographing the inside of a house for real estate, I think it's too tight. If you're a tourist taking photos in cathedrals and art galleries, it's fine (since whole ceiling pictures are boring). For events -- photographing people and groups indoors -- I think 10-25 is a great range.
1. the shelf is still up! LOL 2. Olympus have the same push pull focus ring on their lenses.. love it
focus ring fixation. got it... It's interesting watching new gear come around and how ranges optically and f-stop get more/less attention through the years...
Who know's what the optics are like, I want it! *Slight joke
Wonderful news on your upcoming wedding. Congratulations!
Cheers James :)
Great! And congratulations!
Thanks mate!
What do you suggest for indoor sport photography. I get close up to the student (parkour)
Congratulations on getting married! A full set of lenses from Lumix as a wedding gift would be nice at this point...just a thought Lumix
Great video mate! I'll be selling off basically the same lenses as you to get a 10-25. Paired with the 50-200 I'll have a pretty sweet kit! So stoked!
Congrats on the wedding, wishing you a long and happy marrige , I would love to get the 10-25mm lens, or even the 15mm.
Great review man! Wondering if that was the GH5 you were using for the handheld shots on the beach? Looks a lot more stable than I was expecting - wonderung if that's from the IBIS or after the fact stabilization?
BTW: consider that it is sometimes handy to have the odd lens for back-up just incase your 'main' one gets out of order ;-)
Hey James. Loved the video. You are so authentic and funny. I have a quick question for you. I got my G9 and can’t choose between 10-25 Mmm f 1.7 and 12-35 f2.8. I only have 42.5 and kit lens 12-60m. Does it worth having 10-25mm?
You know James... The humor in your videos... :-P A Lumix Ambassador... And marriage! Life just keeps getting better and better! Congrats!
Probably the last time I got excited about a lens was the Zeiss Otus... The 55 and 85. Those things are just so gorgeous. And their performance: second to none.
Then comes along the 10-25mm f/1.7...
The 8-18 with it's f/2.8-4 was 'okay'. I would still have to work it for event photography in dark locations and no flashes. But f/1.7 is a godsend. No flash. Lower ISO. Higher shutter speed... And the focal range is just about perfect for a general wide zoom. Even with my 12-60mm, I've gotten some pretty amazing, wide shots. The extra 2mm is just gravy. Downloaded stills from a production 10-25mm on a G9. SUPER sharp! The image rending is what you'd expect: damn beautiful. It's a damn big lens for m43. But it's a little sacrifice for the performance
Keep up the great work and again, congrats on the wedding!
This may be the best review of this lens I've seen so far.
Thanks mate!
Hi James, I need ur help..... is this 10-25mm good enough for architecture & real estate photography on a wider end? Or having Laowa 9mm zero D would be better along side 10-25mm?
TIA :)
The pullback AF ring is the best page they they took from Olympus design book. Have it on my 12-40/2.8 pro, it's incredibly useful.
Congrats on your soon-ish wedding! I've always wanted a MFT lens with that focus clutch thingamajig.
Cheers mate :)
What video codec do you use? Really excellent quality.
Hi James. Im thinking of buying this lense. I have the Leica 12-60 f2.8 but really wanna have it a bit wider. What do you recomend. 8-18 or the 10-25 f.1.7 I shoot with the GH5 even if it isn't the best for stills but i like the outcome. im not a pro so it is more learn by doing and watching you and others making great tutorials. Greetings from Norway and Bengt.
This is an absolute dream lens for me ever since it was announced at photokina last year. Sadly with its price point its gonna stay a dream for the foreseeable future...
Great video as usual 🙂
Cheers!
Yeah it's going to be a bit painful this one! Cheers mate :)
Do you take portrait shoot with this lens (at 25mm) ?
The depth of field is timed by 2 but the light gathering is the same no matter what sensor size your on.
That’s more important for me specially shooting in low light than depth of field.
Hi James. What ND filters would you purchase for this lens
Waiting with Baited breath to get mine. I am in Tasmania by the way. Used to live in Melbourne. Tasmania blows away the mainland. Reckon everyone will move down here soon. Because the mainland will be too scorching hot.
Great video! First I've seen from you :) Subscribed man! And that lens, my god! Do you think that it'llbe great for video with GH5? Thanks
Great to hear mate! And what a pairing 😀
That lens will be a monster for video! 🤟🏼
Many congratulations on the forthcoming wedding! Have already sold off my 12-35;12mm and 25mm lenses to help fund my purchase of the 10-25mm. Really looking forward to using it with my G9. Have kept my 8-18 and 15mm for my second camera body and because of their compactness. BTW Have booked onto your Iceland workshop with Nigel in January - looking forward to it!
Ahh thanks mate - see you there, looking forward to it :)
Very interesting. When I need a wide lens, I just remove my teleconverter from my 600 mm. Very often it is sufficient. When it's not, I enjoy watching your landscapes. Impressing work. Congratulations - better late than never.
The DOF discussion is the most misunderstood concept. Micro 4/3 simply has a smaller sensor which forces you to use a shorter focal length or increase your distance to the subject. Both of those things increase DOF. Simple as that. The sensor itself isn't changing the DOF and the aperture remains the same. f1.7 is always f1.7.
True. However pixel pitch being smaller than full frame, noisier images are generally expected.
Very true
markhou that being true theoretically, the gab now in 2019 is so tiny, because to it is much easier to cool MFT comparing to the FF so they can actually offer much better performance in more portable factor for much lower price than a FF, as for BMPCC4K. More I learn about it, as much as I hated it in the beginning, the trade of for that low light shooting is definitely in favour of MFT. Unless you are doing some heavy under water shooting or spying on people on the dark 😁 you will beat FF by MFT sensors in 95% of the tasks.
Yep, I've grown o really hate the term equivalence. Seems to bring out the worst in people on the gear head forms. F-stop is unambiguously defined by focal length and the actual size of the aperture. A 50 mm f/1.7 lens is a 50mm f/1.7 lens. Yes, the formats have different pluses and minuses. But almost all of the cameras available today are capable of making wonderful photographs. Even phone cameras these days can make terrific images. And they are all capable of making extremely mundane and boring photos (even if technically perfect).
PetR Things I Like lol
Haha, your eyes light up like a child at Christmas, of course you need that lens! Maybe a good wedding gift from your friends? 😄
Congrats to your upcoming wedding!
Thommy Öhman when’s the bachelor party?! Loo
😂😂 I think Emily would love a lens for our wedding gift!
😂😂 I've been given no details
James Popsys I’m pretty sure she will love it at least as much as you will! 😆
To bad the price tag on that lens isn’t “micro”, but as you said in the video; you might be able to reduce some weight in total and not need to switch lenses to often.
Couldn’t you make a video about being lumix ambassador and what it’s like and how to become one etc?
Haha that's crazy...I have the same 4 lenses and definitely going to replace them with the 10-25mm... lumix canada just sent me the 10-25mm to test out over the last few weeks and it's fantastic! Great for wedding photography! Thanks for the video!
Great minds Joshua :)
I’ve ordered your 2018 book as a bit short this month and don’t have it, can you keep one of the 2019 ones for me please till next month?
Great video! Did you ever buy one? Considering getting one for my G9 but as you said, it's no small purchase!
Does it have hard stops on the focus ring?
Congrats!
Slowly, but surely you will make the full circle and admit that sometimes bigger is better :) I know I did! That's why I ended up having BOTH a m4/3 camera and a full frame camera. I just shoot what I feel like at the given moment and my soul is calm now :)
Great lens, I own a G7 and a G9, the lieca 8/18mm lens and the lieca 100/400mm, a hand full of Panasonic lenses as well, I like your review on this lieca lens, I like it's range and the fact it has a constant aperture, I think I'll be buying it as well 👍 📷😊
Have you had an opportunity to compare this to the 12mm 1.4?
What's the display (DELL) model you use?
The "wont need to change lens" reason was my excuse for the g6 a few years back before travelling. I used the 2 cameras = less lens changing.
Interesting that James says he does not need as shallow a Depth of Field as is usual in Full Format. I have the same. In fact, I prefer Micro Four Thirds because of its larger Depth of Field. It makes it so much easier to achieve good focus, and if a blurry background is really needed, it still can be achieved.
True. We can achieve separation with a 35-100 on the longer tele end. Some people are absolutely obsessed with demolishing the background. I'm not xD
I shot my own wedding! You should give it a go James! It's quite easy to setup a camera and plonk it onto a tripod, or a guests hands for certain shots. Collect all the guests phone shots and such too, job done and with that saving - new glass! Congratulations and good luck!
What is an alternative lens I can use to shoot video in a low light ???
Congratulations on the wedding and awesome images. This lens made me very excited ... until I started reading that there is a quite significant problem with field curvature on the 10mm range. That's why your 8-18mm was sharper in the corners. It's quite a big issue for me because I would love this lens for Landscapes about 75% of the time and field curvature does not get fixed by stopping down to f 8 or f 11 (yes, I know about diffraction above f 5.6) and it also creates big issues for stitching panoramas because the out of focus corners will overlap and create distortion and out of focus issues with any software. I do hope they can fix the issue, I need to replace my Olympus 14-54mm f 2.8-3.5 at some point.
Thank you! Not such an issue for my stuff 🙂
I’m a Olympus 4/3 shooter. Can I use this lens on an Olympus camera? If so is a lens adapter required? If so will AF work? Is there stabilization in the lens? Thanks
Of course, and no need for any adapter. If this lens has optical stabilization that would not work in conjunction with the Olympus IBIS. But in general the Lumix lenses work fine on Olympus bodies, and vice versa.
Congratulations on the wedding!
The lens reminds me of the Olympus 12-40 f2.8, especially the manual focus ring. There will be folks who love it, and others who hate it. Hope that Panasonic will offer a place in the menu to switch the ring off.
My problem is: my other wide angle lens, Pana 8-18 is mostly used on 8-9 mm. :/ And I absolutely love my Oly 25mm f1.2. So, this lens would add some extra weight. But I love the idea of having less lenses with me and switching them less often.
Kind regards
Me too 🙂
Do you use any type of UV filters? If so what brand do you suggest?
No UVs for me, just lens hoods for protection 🙂
You can find plenty of pull ring focus lenses in the dark side of mft ;)
Jeanpierre Moscardin tempting! Lol
I'll just never had one! 😁
I am considering buying the leica 8-18 for landscape photography, but now this new lense came along. Is there a big difference on the wider end [8 instead of 10] of spectrum?
Go for the 8-18, lighter, smaller, cheaper and yes the 2 mm can make a difference. (...and you don't need a f1.7 lens in landscape photagraphy anyway.)
If you shoot wide alot in good light, the 8-18 is for you 🙂
LOL! Pull back focus! I do like this lens mate. Yet Olympus has manual 'clutch' for many years, but it's a welcome addition in the Lumix mix (huh). Anyway, I am tempted by this lens too. Oh, congrats on wedding and good luck with planning. J
Congrats on the wedding.
Sounds like you’ve already decided emotionally!!
There must be some justification in buying it since it is your livelihood
That's what I'm telling myself Andy :)
Congratulations James, marriage is one the most important decision. I have been married for almost 37 years and I am glad I did. Be happy and keep you great humor, it will help you a lot . Best wishes.
What cameras are you using? I know you use MFT and Panasonic but what models?
G9 :)
Great video, James. But I have to ask: are you going to pull the trigger on a retail version of this lens? I have the 12-60mm kit lens. I love it. But it'd be great to have the f1.7 of this lens available to me. I'm just worried that it's so huge that trying to vlog with it will be a royal pain. Is there any other lens you would consider before it? Have you ever tried any Olympus lenses (like the 7-14mm f2.8) on the G9? Curious what the 'catch' is with this lens. It sounds like exactly what MFT users who don't want to go the Sigma route are looking for. But something seems slightly too good to be true.
Also: thanks for all these videos. I made the jump from Canon FF to Lumix MFT a few months back and these videos have really made me feel like that jump was the right decision. Been getting great photos with my GH5, a camera everyone said was rubbish for photos, and it's nice to know I'm not crazy for thinking the Lumix is a crackin' camera you can get great results with if you just take your time and use the gear the right way.
Thanks for the video, James. Good look with wedding planing.
Next time, throw a pair of glasses in your camera bag. I guess you have your bag on you most of the time.
Daniel Henz gotta have some shades!
Thanks mate! 🙂
I'm still waiting for someone to review the Leica vs the Sig 18-35 for video.

Congrats James & Emily! I take it it's too late to return the engagement ring... that money would come in handy for the lens.
Good thinking, I'll ask...
How does it do with video? I use my GH4 primarily for video but also still. Would you buy this lens for video?
So this, the Panasonic Leica 50-200, and the Laowa 7.5mm? Hmmm...
Congratulations on your wedding! I wish you and Emily many great years together.
I just got my g9 today! alright reeally really like it cant wait to use it officially..also got the 7-14mm today... which is a pretty sweet lens! only thing is its a f4.0 but that 7mm wideness is pretty freaking cool and its quite sharp
Nice, enjoy! :)

Happy testing
Cheers Alan, I'm certainly happy :)
I really enjoy your videos.

It is like looking at myself when I try to convince me that I’m buying a new lens because I really really really need it 🙈
haha!
I just bought 5 absolutely nothings. I can't see how Emily could possibly object to the purchase of the new lens now. 👍🦆
😂 You superstar!!! Thank you 🙂
What lens are you using to film yourself in the intro?
Here in 2023. Seeing that fella went FF in the end. I have FF and apsc cameras but I'd love to still try this one day. Just for fun.
Congratulations on getting married James & Emily! Great video James! Wales certainly offers up a whole lot of great potential shots. Have a fantastic weekend!

Also very excited by this lens. Owning the 2.8-4 trifecta of 8-18, 12-60 and 50-200 at the moment. Very interested to see if this new 10-25 can do decent astro as that would make me swap it out for the 8-18....??

Very much enjoyed the preview on this lens,,thanks,,, It also could replace the Lumix 7-14 which I chose (for price) over the 8-18..Not sure if I could ever give up the Leica 15mm 1.7 --certainly not on the basis of bag space or weight,, since it accounts for very little of either. Hilarious , hi James i have just purchased a g9 which should arrive in a few days, what are your thoughts on the 12-35 f2.8
My most used lens for the last 3 years I think - love it :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto Thanx James keep up the excellent material.
Saw the title and clicked in so fast, but then as the video was loading I realized this video is probably about the $2000 lens. Nailed it. Absolutely fantastic lens, but I'm happy enough with my Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster ($120) and Sigma Art 18-35 (got it for $555). Getting down to f1.2 is also nice. I do tire of the typical Sigma weight tho lol. It's too bad at the price this lens is, they didn't include any OIS.
Who you marrying, the misses or the new lens 😃😃👍 top stuff chap
Good question 😂
Love what I have been seeing about the lens..... but way out of my price range.... But yeah... you're going to get it!! I can see it in your eyes at the end!
Fingers crossed mate 😂
