  • Building yourself a home-made moth trap is a great way to introduce yourself to the world of moths. Moth trapping is a really fun thing to do as it opens up a hidden world full of moths of different shapes, sizes and colours.
Did you know that there are over 1300 common species of moths in Scotland, and you can catch many of these amazing insects using a moth trap.
And remember moths matter, not only are they a food source for many other insects and animals but as moths are very sensitive to climate change, monitoring them is a great way to help us understand the health of a specific area and how it may be changing over time.
To build my home-made bucket moth trap I used:
    • A black, 20 litre hydroponic bucket with a tight-fitting lid
    • Plastic kitchen funnel
    • An Ardacia FD3P23 compact bulb
    • A reptile ceramic heat lamp holder (which came with its own attachments)
    • an empty, clear plastic juice bottle (2l is best)
    • a couple of cable ties
    • an old broom handle cut to size
    • empty egg boxes to place inside the bucket trap
You can save a little money by using a large cardboard box instead of the hydroponics bucket, as shown in the video, but the bucket is weather proof and so will last much longer than a cardboard box will.
