Excellent as always! I use the upper button for focus Peak and the lower button for Depth of Focus Field but for some sessions such as motorsport or railways I use those two buttons to access C1 and C2 and each of the C modes are a complete group of settings which I will need for that subject.
I’ve just discovered this channel because I’ve realised that using my OM1 is a little like trying to learn to drive all over again. Rob Trek and Thomas Eisl are great, but Emilie’s experience as a teacher shines through here. I can’t believe how few subscribers there are, these videos are clear and concise and perfect for my photography.
Thank you so much! Feel free to share my channel with any other photographers who might find them usefull. Love Rob and Thomas' channel. So many great micro 4/3 channles out there.
On an e-m1ii, which doesn't have a joystick, I change the af position with the dials. Top button is af area select, bottom home. I also add a bit of Sugru to make them easier to find.
I have a Lumix G9m2. It also has 2 nearly identical programmable buttons. I use them for near and far focus. Not sure Olympus has such a useful function. It pulls the auto focus away from the wrong subject it has landed on, to nearer the camera or (the lower button) further away. Really useful if the camera has focussed on the branch in front of the bird or behind the bird. You can ask it to bring the focus forward or push it back until it finds the bird. Easier and quicker than the joystick. Gamechanger!
I have to admit that those two buttons are the least used by me. Which is such a shame became not only do they do really good things but they are in a very reachable spot. Thank you for reminding us to use them.
I use top button for subject detection options, the bottom button is left for DOF which I use in conjunction with manual focus (with Peaking turned on)
Thank you. They are so useful. Start thinking about function you use a lot and have to go to the menu to get, then you know those two buttons might be great host for them!
@@EmilieT Thanks Emilie, It is quite good in certain circumstance, but the camera has to be very still whilst using it. So if in a hide and you can rest the camera on a bean bag, or hide shelf it is OK, hand held it is a bit hit and miss, but it is useful at times.
I also use those buttons the same as George while in my landscape custom mode. It is worth mentioning that they can be configured differently (or the same) in each of the custom modes.
Have been using the front buttons for many years, am an exception (I think) who assigns the AF on button and front button at the bottom to AF on and I find this is beautiful, always focus with ring finger, only when camera is low to the ground I focus with the AF on button at the back. I use the top front button as a distance limiter.
That's hilarious... here i am thinking i am clever, and your buttons are programmed exactly as mine are on my E-M1X (which also gives those buttons in portrait, which i shoot often) - so, so useful. Good vid. Cheers.
I have my lower button set to AF Target Mode to switch between full & spot quickly. I had the upper set to exposure control, but I am going to try focus peaking as I really like that idea. Thanks.
On my EM-1iii, the top button is for peaking and the bottom one is for C1, which has my settings for macro (focus bracketing, etc). On my OM-1, I kept the peaking on the top button and have focus bracketing on the bottom one. By holding the button and moving the dial I can easily adjust the focus bracketing settings. This is so much easier to use in the field than a custom setting on the top dial.
Top button for High Res Mode; bottom button for Subject Detection. I'm not worried about stopping down to preview DOF, and I don't set a Custom WB very often.
I use the buttons for one touch white balance (since I do use that a fair amount) and depth of field preview so I can make sure I have enough depth of field
@ I do, actually. I'm very used to having depth of field up front because I use it a lot and that's where my Nikons all have it, even my film bodies (although I use digital most of the time). I use more than one system
@@EmilieT it's interesting. I didn't actually realize that those were the original functions of the buttons, but if I'm using a different body like my E-PL8 which doesn't have the buttons, I map the L-Fn to depth of field preview and map another button on the body for one touch white balance
I've programmed and reprogrammed those buttons so I keep forgetting what I’ve done. But with the OG E-M1 I used the top button to return the focal point to the centre and that’s what I keep expecting whenever I press that button on the OM-1 (even though there’s a joy stick to do that now).
Ever since they allowed assigning Custom modes to buttons, first on the M1X, and all bodies since then, I do C1 & C2 on the front. Miss having all 4 C modes on front buttons like the M1X.
I use them and have programmed like I want. Subject detection on the upper. And Peaking on the bottom. Sometimes I press them accidentally, but I still like the buttons. I wish they were little harder to press down so I don't do it accidentally.
The front buttons on my OM-1 are set differently based on the custom mode. As an example, for landscape the top one is AE bracket and the bottom is focus bracket. For Astro the top is Starry sky AF and the bottom turns on live comp. A frustration i have is the way the D-pad buttonare limited. I'd like S-OVF on the down button and picture style on the left button.
It's a little ironic that I can't use these buttons while wearing the gloves you recommended last video. I do use the buttons (custom modes), but only when it's warmer.
I still have and use EM 5 and EPL 5 Olympus 2012 cameras and a 2010 EPL 1 they all still work great. The EM5 has traveled the world many times f=om Canada to Japan and the Philippines
My camera has buttons? Never realized this. Since years I try to find out what the button for the right index finger is doing, sometimes it clicks. Maybe it's broken and needs repair.
Hi Miss !

I didn’t know about them but will now program for the magnifier and stacking.
Glad this is helpful.

Hi Emille
I love these two buttons. Top button is set for N.D. and the bottom button is for Live Grad ND. Works great.
Hi George! Thank you for sharing. I like that set up too! Perfect for landscape photography.
I will program my landscape C2 button like that ❤
I have a Lumix G9m2. It also has 2 nearly identical programmable buttons. I use them for near and far focus. Not sure Olympus has such a useful function. Thank you for sharing! That sounds like an interesting function.
I like the way you set up the buttons. These are exactly how I will set them up
Thank you. I find this useful for wildlife photography.
@EmilieT I'm super paranoid about focus so this tip suits me very well!
I use the front buttons the same as you do but on my EM1 II. Very handy!
EM1 Mark II is an amazing camera! My first Olympus camera actually!
I have focus peaking on the top button and magnify on the bottom button. Great for when I am using my vintage lenses.
I agree!
I have to admit that those two buttons are the least used by me. Which is such a shame became not only do they do really good things but they are in a very reachable spot. Thank you for reminding us to use them.
I use top button for subject detection options, the bottom button is left for DOF which I use in conjunction with manual focus (with Peaking turned on)
Excellent advice! I know about those buttons, but rarely use them. I’ll have to think about how I’d like to customize them.
Thank you. They are so useful. Start thinking about function you use a lot and have to go to the menu to get, then you know those two buttons might be great host for them!
Thank you Emilie, great video. I have programmed all my buttons. I use the front bottom button for HDR and the top front button for my C4 settings. 😁
Thank you! And thanks for sharing how you programmed your buttons.
I like the idea of using one for my custom mode. Thanks
Hi Emilie, good video again. I use the top of the two buttons to switch on the 2x digital tele-convertor, the bottom one for Peaking. Thanks Chris
Thank you for sharing Chris! How do you like the 2X digital tele-convertor. I must admit I don't use it very often.
@@EmilieT Thanks Emilie, It is quite good in certain circumstance, but the camera has to be very still whilst using it. So if in a hide and you can rest the camera on a bean bag, or hide shelf it is OK, hand held it is a bit hit and miss, but it is useful at times.
@@chrismc2090 Hi Chris, I've used it several times in landscape on a tripod & the results have been pretty good, as you say a bit hit & miss handheld.

I actually have used the top one of the 2 for AF on. I found it to work well for me on many different cameras.
Thank you for sharing!

Yes it is a great function, that way you don't have to get into the menu to change them.
Top button for High Res Mode; bottom button for Subject Detection. I'm not worried about stopping down to preview DOF, and I don't set a Custom WB very often.
That is a great way to use them!
Emilie - have you released on sheet on all your settings yet?
They will be available this Wednesday on my website.
@@EmilieT What/where on website will these be posted?
@@jeffreyferguson9174 Here is the link on my website to order them now: www.emilietalpin.com/my-cheat-sheets

I use the buttons for one touch white balance (since I do use that a fair amount) and depth of field preview so I can make sure I have enough depth of field
Thank you for sharing. So you use them as they were programmed originally. Do you do a lot of studio work?

You are so welcome
Great video. I have my front two buttons set to Subject AI and Subject select/Lock.
That’s a great set up!
My L:umix has them and I think I chose one for brackets. But I think I will revisit all my buttons now. Thank you.,
Happy it was helpful.
Ah parfait!
Top I use for digital teleconvertor, the bottom one for peaking. Cheers
Hi.I also use the 14x magnification and the 2x digital zoom on my OM DE M1 MKll.
Than you for sharing!
I use the top button for Live ND and the bottom for Focus Peaking.
Thank you for sharing

I'm new to the OM-1 so still figuring out a lot since I used a Canon R6
Welcome to the OM SYSTEM family. You will have a lot of fun with your OM-1!

Very good explained! I would love to use this buttons, but my fingers don’t work anymore to reach those buttons😥
Oh no. I am so sorry :(

True. You do have to be careful
I use the bottom button as Focus Limiter
Interesting use!
@EmilieT the Lens Preset buttons work well on my Big White, I use it more for my 300 Pro

Great idea! It is amazing to be able to costum those buttons and change them for C1, C2, C3 and C4!
Mine's set up just like yours. What's the chance of that? Something about great minds I guess.
:) I agree :)
Top button ND and bottom Bkt.
Great setup!
