Earl Simmons (born December 18, 1970), professionally known as DMX, is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. In 1999, DMX released his best-selling album ...And Then There Was X, which included the hit single "Party Up (Up in Here)". He has been featured in films such as Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave and Last Hour. In 2006, he starred in the reality television series DMX: Soul of a Man, which was primarily aired on the BET cable television network. In 2003, DMX published a book of his memoirs entitled, E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX.
DMX was born Earl Simmons in Mount Vernon, New York, the son of Arnett Simmons and Joe Barker, and was raised in Yonkers, New York. As a child, he was brought up in the Jehovah's Witness faith. Simmons went through an abusive childhood that included stays at group homes and frequent arrests.
In 1991, Gabriel Grevenstuk from The Source magazine praised DMX in his Unsigned Hype column that highlighted unsigned hip-hop artists. In 1991, DMX recorded his first demos, Unstoppable Force and Three Little Pigs. His stage name was a tribute to an instrument he used in the 1980s, the Oberheim DMX drum machine; it later was interpreted as "Dark Man X".
In 1992, Columbia Records signed DMX to their subsidiary label Ruffhouse, which released his debut single "Born Loser". The single did not receive much airplay. The label eventually agreed to release DMX from their contract.
He released his second single, "Make a Move" in 1994, and made a guest appearance alongside Jay Z, Ja Rule, and Mic Geronimo on the classic underground track "Time To Build" on Mic Geronimo's debut album in 1995. He also appeared on LL Cool J's single "4, 3, 2, 1" in 1997. Additional guest spots on Mase singles "24 Hrs. to Live" and "Take What's Yours", and The LOX's single "Money, Power & Respect" created a strong buzz. DMX also made a cameo appearance in the Sum 41 music video for "Makes No Difference".
In February 1998, DMX released his debut major-label single, "Get at Me Dog", on Def Jam Recordings. The single was certified Gold by the RIAA. His first major-label album, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, which included the single "Ruff Ryders Anthem", was released in May 1998. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S and sold over five million copies.
Later that year in December, DMX released his second album, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, where it remained for three consecutive weeks. Within one week of the album's release, 670,000 units were shipped. It was eventually certified Platinum four times. As a result, DMX was the first rapper in history to have released two number one albums in the same year, both of which debuted on Billboard 200.
DMX released his third and best-selling album ...And Then There Was X, on December 21, 1999. It was his third album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Its most popular single, "Party Up", became his first Top Ten hit on the R&B charts. Singles "What's My Name?" and "What These Bitches Want" were also popular. The album was certified six-times Platinum.
After improving his legal situation (see section "Legal Issues"), DMX returned to the studio to complete his fourth album, The Great Depression. Released October 23, 2001, it was his fourth album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, featuring the singles "Who We Be", "We Right Here", and "Shorty Was The Bomb". Despite the album's triple Platinum certification, its commercial and critical success was lower than his previous album.
His fifth album, Grand Champ, once again debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 charts, placing DMX as the only musical artist in history to release five consecutive albums (his entire album catalog at the time) that debuted at number one. Singles include "Where Tha Hood At" and "Get it on the Floor". After its release, he informed the public that he planned to retire, and that Grand Champ would be his final album.
DMX signed to Columbia Records in January 2006. He recorded his next album, Year of the Dog...Again, while switching record labels, which caused numerous delays. It was finally released on August 1, 2006, and missed the number one Billboard spot by only a few hundred copies. He released two more singles, "Lord Give Me A Sign" and "We In Here"
On June 12, 2008, Def Jam released a compilation of his greatest hits, The Definition of X: The Pick of the Litter. Def Jam released another compilation album, The Best of DMX, in 2011. which features hit singles including "Where the Hood At?" and "X Gon' Give It to Ya".
In 2009, DMX claimed he would pursue preaching in Jersey City, New Jersey but will also continue to produce music. He completed a Gospel album prior to his incarceration. According to MTV, he had semi-retired to study the Bible more in an effort to give messages behind the pulpit.
I don’t think people realize that DMX revived hip hop in the late 90’s. After the death of Pac and BIG, Hip Hop lost its edge, rappers were selling out with the shiny suits and the corny 80’s funk pop samples. DMX gave hip hop it’s edge back.
He revived it at the mainstream level. Real Hip Hop ain't never took a break ever.
Facts
Hip hop turned p*ssy around 2011. Women's clothes and stuff.
@@SundaywithSamuel he was the embodiment of hip hop. Don't marginalize him like that.

Couldn’t be more classic. X performing at the tunnel. Man hip hop was live in NY in those days.
A rare moment when a music video transcends into a timeless piece of art.
That night in the Tunnel was epic
This is one of the coldest songs ever! X
Young sober , determined, X was a bonafide beast

When this came out in '98, it literally put an end to the short lived shiny suit era. DMX was what the rap game was missing/needed/wanted after Pac and Biggie. R.I.P. DMX
DMX wore a shiny suit in the "What's MY Name" video.
It was leather
@@vanimaladventures the word i'd use for the energy of the video is not shiny
he took it off to destroy things
I was at the Tunnel when this fire was filmed. One of the most amazing nights ever. 25 years and still fire

DMX bodied K-Solo with this track.
Originally it was aimed at pac
@@jadasheekstyles2000 No it wasn't aimed at Pac. Parts of it was aimed directly at K-Solo for claiming stole his song Spellbound and parts at the industry which was on some soft dancing, shinny shit (Diddy) although not aimed at Diddy himself. There's enough footage on YT where Irv, Dee, Waah and X all speak on it.
@@kinginanorth he's talking about the "I Shot Ya Freestyle" you dimwit 😂😂
@@vicvega24 bruh do some research b4 adding your senseless comment. X has been on record many times saying that line was never meant to diss Pac personally. Shit was meant for underground consumption as he never came across Pac but one time and they said what's up and kept it moving. Had no reason to say the line other than using his name but not aimed at him. So when he did pop off with a record K-Solo was inserted cause of their beef over spellbound. Cats had all kinds of underground shit with popular rappers on the track just to get some momentum. 50 did that shit and said like 30 rappers names most of which he is cool as shit with but he was underground and wanted to clout. Hell he even mentioned DMX on the record, called him a crack head.
@@kinginanorth
No 50 never called DMX a crackhead. I don't know where you got that from. Smh. And X did tell 2pac to suck his dick on the original version of this. It's on UA-cam. Obviously it wasn't a personal issue but he may have already recorded that before he met pac and changed it after. And there are lines dissing k solo in this too. And the softness of rap at that point after pac and big's murder. DMX didn't have to diss guys for clout. He's not that type of guy..
One of the greatest to ever do it.
I truly believe when dmx came on the scene. He took it to another level
Ever rapper had to step their game up. He changed the culture of hip hop.
And a great workout tune 💪
Facts. At this time hip hop had fell into a routine. He blew it up
I'll never get over this loss SMH rap ain't ever been the same

I come back to listen to legendary artist like X often. I don't feel like it's a goodbye, but see you later because your music lives on. Salute to you King
This is one of the most powerful hiphop videos ever made. Period! This video was a statement. As Lyor stated, its important that we shot it in black and white not technicolor coz its a black and white world, grimy and gritty.
22 yrs later this video still gives me goosebumps. What video can be better than this? Seeing the Lox on stage with Irv Gotti, Russell Simmons, Lyro Cohen, Styles P.....fresh
This song made me buy my first DMX album...still my favorite DMX song...
Its dark and hell is hot is number #1

FACTS.... The Best Way to Describe X. The underdog that came out of the gutter to defeat the foe even when he was low. 😎😎🎶🎶
R.I.P. to a Real MC
Thanx for uploading this. This is probably my favorite DMX song ever. It's also the first song I ever heard him on back in '98. As a rapper myself he definitely had some inspiration for me...especially on my battle songs.
One of the hardest HipHop beats ever. Suspenseful with a catchy bells jingle and a groovy drum beat. Sick
*DMX is FIRE!!*
DMX Goat ❤❤
❤❤❤
Realest of all time, this man kept it 100 regardless of whether you were rich or poor.
Thank God for DMX. He got me through life. Party Up was my go to vent song. Get at Me Dog, my favorite song out of the catalog. Definitely an underrated rapper in the game.
Prayers up for you X.
I still miss him every day. This song is so lit. Rest in peace, X.
This song and video and artist changed hip hop for the better rest well to the dog!
R.I.P. DMX one of the best to ever step on the stage and grab a mic.
Pure, masculinity and testosterone. Shit way watered down today.
Lol that's what the elites want
