Great advice! I also like the German smear on brick.

Thanks for the tip, Yvetha! I have to admit I had not heard of the German smear technique. I'm sure I've seen it many times in shabby-chic decor. But it's definitely a no-going-back proposition! Thanks again!

Glad you liked it Cara! That's one of the toughest issues in decor - when one improvement makes something else look dated.

Everyone paints and white-washes their fireplaces. Extremely dull and redundant, in my opinion. Go for a concrete stain. Many different options and makes it stand out more from the crowd.

My son is a professional painter and he painted our dark brown paneling in our den a soft white in satin and OMG it looks amazing. Our den no longer is like walking into a dark cave. It has lit up the room so much. Now I have a delema. The brick fireplace is a combination of brown and tan brick and the seating area is across the intire room on one wall and there's dark wooden cabinets on each side of the fireplace. I want to keep the dark cabinets but I want to update the brick. I want some color that will add color other than brown and white to the room without going dark. I love blue but not sure what shade to use. I thought about painting the brick blue and then doing a German wash over the blue in white. ??? What do you think ???

Personally, I like that idea! If you're committed to the German schmear, you can go fairly dark or bold with your underlying blue. Like a deep navy or a vibrant cobalt. But you MUST NOT judge the color while in process! You won't know the real result until you cover the whole fireplace with the schmear.
If you're nervous about that color commitment, try it on a test material! Use a 2ft x 2ft or larger piece of plywood and try the whole technique on it. Then set it against the fireplace for a few days and see how it strikes you. You might ask your son to create a mock-up for you. He's probably used to making them for architects and designers.
Good luck and I hope you love it!

This is where I am today.!! Staring at an outdated brick fireplace and wondering if I should paint the bricks. I painted a few bricks with a light coat of paint very slightly darker than the wall next to the fire place. It retained the texture of the brick and looks really authentic than I thought it would. I’m considering only painting the bricks that are red, orange and yellow and leaving the tan and taupe bricks. Yikes! Help. I also am
Considering charcoal gray but that makes me nervous

Hi Andrea! I think leaving some bricks unpainted can be a nice look. It can give a nice random pattern that feels worn and antique. But if it ends up looking like freckles in the end, you could always go back and paint the others too. Charcoal gray would be bold! Is there anything you could use to fake that look for a few days to see how you like it? Paint a large cardboard piece and lean it up to the bricks? Or you can do like I did for some of the video - take a photo of the fireplace, put it in Google Sheets and then try different colors with shapes over top of the bricks. Hope that helps! Good Luck!

I would paint bricks in this day and age because there are a lot of different methods of painting, staining, ect., to choose from that actually look terrific but....only if the bricks were ugly otherwise to me it's a taboo act not to be done! 🤪
