  • This was taken on 11 Sep 2013 at the Kinema, Woodhall Spa. It was the launch of Finding the Pathfinders film, by Sharon Cannings and Martin Nichols. It follows the moving journey of PFF, 97 Squadron veteran, Percy Cannings to track down the crew members he served in Bomber Command with.
The BBMF Lancaster PA474 honoured us all with a stunning ultra low Flypast, which set of car alarms in the car park. Percy Cannings and his daughters, Sandy and Sharon, can be seen in the clip. It was also Percy's 90th birthday.
Percy flew 47 operations with Bomber Command - he is one of the veterans featured in the book Riding in the Shadow of Death, by Chris Keltie.

Spent time as a young boy in the early 1960's with an elderly lady that lived in France under German occupation, and she said the sound of a Lancaster bomber flying was the sound of FREEDOM!!.Never forget!

Hello from Hamilton Ontario... your lovely bird sounds just like our Vera. Nothing like hearing those four Merlins thundering overhead. One of the most terrifying things I've ever imagined was when someone said "imagine a thousand of those flying over all at once, dropping bombs."

Make your way north to Hamilton, Ontario and see Vera fly... she's the highlight of the airshow every father's day weekend, has a B-25 Mitchell off her wing, and always comes with an escort of Spitfires, Hurricanes and Mustangs along with any other WW2 birds who can find the time.

Yes! Today they talk of sporting "heroes"!! IMHO not one sporting "hero" ever experienced what Bomber Command aircrew (and the ground attack Typhoon IB pilots) did during WWII: of that the GREATEST generation of young men and women that ever lived!!

    • @cycleSCUBA

Those boys did what they did out of a combination of duty to their King and Country, and also a strong sense of camaraderie amongst the crews, a 'we're all in this together' attitude.
How many nowadays would do what they did?
      I wonder.
