    It was a year ago that I watched that video, doing what I could to learn about how to get into the cybersecurity industry. I'd watch these videos while driving to a job I didn't want to do. Fast forward one year later: I'm not only still watching your amazing videos, David, but I'm also now working full-time as a security consultant. Unbelievable world we live in.

      you are going to have a big problem getting into cyber security, its predominantly white field and white managers run the scene right now they want the minimal black and brown people to pass EEOC standards so if you are of latino or black descent you are SOL. I would look at other fields, there wont be equality until four decades from now.

    I love that Neil dropped a few unpopular opinions in there. People wanna call themself "hackers" but completely lack the determination and problem solving capabilities to educate themselvs. If you guys think googling stuff is tedious, this job ain't for you ;)

    • @therealp7667
      @therealp7667 Рік тому +1

      Yes and I think its worth noting that this is a learned skill. I know for me I hated googling things in the beginning because it felt like I wasn’t doing things “authentically” or “organically” or something. Then I learned that It is an essential tool in a programmer’s and hacker’s toolbox. Now I am totally at home in the search bar. Getting past the annoyance of googling is just part of the process.

    • @napalm1101
      @napalm1101 Рік тому

      That's because most people get their idea of "hacking" from crappy movies and terrible television shows (looking right at you, CSI and similar shows). This leads them to believe that hackers are magical ubergods who are somehow plugged directly into the matrix and know literally everything with perfect recall who can execute that at the drop of a hat.
      Crazy.
      The most accurate depiction of hacking ever shown in popular culture is the movie War Games. You know why? It shows a young man sitting around in his underwear in the dark researching tedious, arcane information while his life passes him by just so he can figure out a weird puzzle.

    I watched the video with Neal a year ago. Took the advice to heart and starting preparing for the eJPT. Got the eJPT in June of last year, keep preparing and getting better. Did all the free stuff first. I start a job tomorrow as a pen tester with my dream firm. That’s real. Thank you for your content.

    I’m in my last year bachelors Cyber Security and really looking forward to finally start working in the field. Even though I know most of these things I still find Neal very refreshing. I never thought bug bounty hunting would be possible for someone with not that much real world experience/advanced web app hacking. But what he said was truly eye opening. Pentesting unpaid still gives you hands on experience and new insights in how I’m doing things and might even land you a bounty after trying. Amazing tip!

    Those in college studying (or even after) Security+ is a good entry certification. If you want to go into government employment usually they want that on hand

    I like that he said the A+, Network+, etc. don't necessarily have to be your first certs or starting point. This was the train of thought back when I started out in '05, but looking back he's absolutely right. You don't need to know how many pins the ISO has standardized some pin-out as to understand other concepts. I believe people should jump in where they find it comfortable, or in what aspect they enjoy the most. After all, this should be about enjoyment and the satisfaction of learning and mastering.

      @napalm1101 Рік тому +2

      I've always told people to stop memorizing arcane esoteric stuff like pin outs or whatever. If you need to know that info by heart you'll see it often enough that you automatically memorize it. If you don't need it that much, you won't remember it, and that's okay. You're better off understanding the underlying concepts and how to put those into play to figure out what you need to know.

    15:05 Man this is EXACTLY what I needed to hear at this point in my journey. I'm aware of how much there is to take on which excites me. But some topics are more stimulating than others. Furthermore there are some that I know more or less about and must continue to piece them together/ fill in the gaps.

    Tremendous interview, thank you both!! 🙏 I started learning approximately two months ago having no previous knowledge and are gripped on the topic and hands on experience so far, but having watched this interview I'm now questioning if I should continue in my quest. I'm in my late 40s and love new things that challenge me, but if as you say supply outstrips demand, then for someone like myself starting out so late in life and based on what Neal is rightly saying, then should I even consider ethical hacking/pen testing as an eventual career move?

    I just finished my university degree in computer systems and advanced networks, I've so far had two technical interviews, both of them have been 70% competency, the other 30% consist of questions listed below
    1. what does your home network look like
    2. explain to me what happens when you plug that ethernet cable into your computer/laptop
    3.explain public key infrastructure
    4. HTTPS is encrypted, how can you monitor something that is encrypted
    5. what is cross-site scripting and how can it be mitigated
    6. what is phishing and how can it be mitigated
    just a little bit of info for those interested.
    Also he is correct, since leaving Uni in the UK I dont think i have seen more than 1 or 2 pen-testing jobs in my city, compared to new SOC analyst roles almost every week

    Your content is such eye 👁 opener I love it 😍 I’m seeing it like 5 times because it has so much things to take that’s I have to take notes and reverse the video many times because also this is not my primary language so I try to understand every word that you said and also opened an account in INE for me it was like a revelation…. Amazing 🤩 and I’m understanding some things that I wrongly take like “you have to have a certification” and that’s was not true… from now on I’m trying to understand and do something with my “hands on”
