I was recently flummoxed when someone on video call accused me of telling falsehoods because I had "looked up to the right" while I was trying to remember something and that was my "tell". The other person had been watching body language videos and was applying them to our conversation. Suffice to say, I'm an honest person and it was very frustrating to have psycho babble intrude into a sincere conversation.
Whenever I've come across something like that they always point out that a single gesture doesn't mean anything, it should be a pattern of behaviour and it's important fo know a persons baseline first so you know their typical body language. While it's easy to mock, it's not done quite as Dr Grande claims and considering all the available critisism against psychology it seems he's throwing stones in glass houses.
A good body language expert will tell you: there's no such thing as "deceptive" body language at all. You can tell nervousness, confusion, uncertainty, but you can never tell deception. Deception is not an emotion. You can only make an educated guess on whether someone's deceptive or not based on their baseline, the emotions they're displaying at the given moment, etc. It takes YEARS of training to even get that good and even then, nothing is ever certain.
Full disclosure: I'm a woman of color who has lost over 50% of my long, thick, black, course, curly ethnic hair and essentially all my eyelashes due to medical issues. Rock is a comedian, the only people who still can exercise free speech without fear. Rock didn't know about her alleged alopecia. For years, she blamed very overly tight braids and other hairstyles for losing her edges and eventually some of her hair. Look at her beautiful, almost perfect head. Hairline waaaay back. Like when you lose your edges. Even if she has alopecia, Rock wasn't referring to that. He joked about her being the next badass GI Jane. Will groveled and squirmed and cried while she made him sit at her red table for an hour, trying her best to justify her adulterous acts with their son's friend yet insists on calling it an entanglement and blamed Will. Now, perhaps there were needs she she had which weren't being met. No husband or wife can meet 100 % of your needs but you owe them an opportunity to resolve matters...privately without telling the world all the details. So, he's been humiliated and emasculated by his wife and made fun of by the nation and he let it build up and took out his pain, anger, embarrassment, and frustration on Rock who btw, handled himself like a true professional. Most people would have either frozen or defended themselves. He did neither. He kept hosting and kept his composure. ¡Bravo y bendiciones, Chris Rock! 🙏💙
So well stated. Sorry about your hair...I'm White, and I don't know if it's age, or stress, (or both,) but I have so much less hair than I used to...And irritatingly it's also gone all soft and "downy," if you get what I mean. Honestly, I never expected all of the weird physical changes that come with aging. Maybe that's part of the true joy of youth.
I agree my aunt had alopecia I say had because she passed away a couple of years ago , anyway she was Latina and had beautiful thick black hair like her sister losing her has was devastating but she never lost her since of humor she would have laughed and that GI Jane joke and would have thought of it as a compliment. She also would never allow her husband to ruin his moment getting his award. Now everyone is talking about Jada instead of her her husband and his Oscar. I kinda have a feeling that is what she wanted the spotlight all along.
Ok, so it's magical powers to analyze someone's body language in terms of known outcomes, but normal to understand body language in context. Wait, what?
I totally agree, except he misrepresented the few genuine experts by saying that, although there are tones of so called self proclaimed body language experts, there are also genuine ones who don't make any of the absolute comments or claims mentioned in this video.
The members of The Behavior Panel provide published references to their viewers and almost never proclaim that any particular behavior always indicates the same thing. They keep no secrets that I can tell and they always emphasize looking for changes to a person’s baseline behavior. You can’t say, for instance, that scratching one’s nose has a specific meaning.

Jeeps! I have listened to self claimed body language experts and took their words as fact. Thank you for, yet again, shedding light on this subject. I won’t waste anymore of my time. Appreciate your input. Thank you!
Thank you for the interesting perspective, Dr Grande. I'd love to have your opinion on the Behaviour Panel, because these guys address many of your points against body language, and specifically state that they have to "take a baseline" on anyone they are analysing, to learn that persons idiosyncrasies. They admit when they are wrong and state that no one indicator is universal.
I also enjoy watching a few of their videos. Those guys are highly trained and qualified thoug. I think Dr Grande is referring to the many cowboy "experts" out there. Or I am dead wrong and I am of the gamblers in Dr G's gambling analogy 🤣
@@kathyjones3586 I completely agree. And they appear extremely competent and accurate. And they are happy to admit when they get things wrong. I pride myself in hanging an advanced BS detector, and they never triggered it.

I have been waiting for Dr. Grande to weigh in on the Body Language 'Experts' for a long time and he did not disappoint! Excellent analysis Dr. Grande.
There are two types of these body language analysts seen most often, “absolutists” and “non-absolutists”. There is a UA-cam channel by the top four in the world-and none of them are absolutists, meaning they will always tell you that when someone scratches their nose it likely means they had an itch, or it could’ve (less-likely) been a movement associated with coping to feel more comfortable, not related to an itch, but does not mean anything. Also, for years we heard that when a person crosses their arms they are being standoffish, lying, or do not want to “open up”. This is ludicrous. These four do not look at one movement, but rather study the person’s baseline during regular non-stressed conversations where they are known to be telling the truth, at least mostly. They only use clusters of behavior that are unusual along with what the person is discussing and the circumstances at the time. It is not as simple as these other channels describe. They are highly educated and have spent decades in research and the field. They are worth checking out, although I personally will not be listening to anyone else. Edit: The Behavioral Panel-amazing Thank you Dr. Grande for always teaching me something and making me laugh at the same time.
I love the Behavior Panel! These are like my 2 favorite channels. But I feel like what Dr. G describes here is actually substantially different from what they do. Just as Dr. G provides a disclaimer that he's not diagnosing anyone, they disclaim they aren't stating whether or not somebody is telling the truth. In fact, they state they never can, and can only make inferences about emotional state based on clusters of behaviors and how they deviate from baseline. And repeatedly deny the claim that there are any "universal" behaviors that indicate deception. Yeah, it's only a part of a whole picture, it's not magical. I find it hard to entirely dismiss the study of non verbal language. It doesn't seem like any sort of magical or mystical belief to think that humans, like all animals, have over thousands of years of evolution developed patterns of facial expression and body movements to convey something about our inner experience and that this is worthy of study. Indeed, it's not something that should be used for criminal cases or TSA but...it's hard to imagine navigating a world with no understanding of body language, facial expression, or nuances of verbal expression. Especially with covid and increase in text communication, I think there is something helpful in trying to learn more about it. This is not just "duh, obviously" for some of us as we re-enter the world. This study is helpful for understanding how your own behaviors might be interpreted, and having empathy for others. I mean, especially when it comes to empathy, I thought studying non verbal communication really was pretty mainstream psychological area of study. As far as deciding what is ultimately more "harmful" to society... I mean, there are some pretty harsh criticisms of Dr. G, specifically I mean the one referring to the Claudia Conway case. I disagree largely and would defend Dr. G but... those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I am seeing a HUGE increase in people labeling every ex a narcissist or sociopath. These videos DO encourage lay people to think about applying DSM labels on their neighbors. Is that any worse than thinking you can tell when a job applicant is lying because they fidget too much?
Yes, I love that channel too. They are not absolutists. Dr. Grande missed the mark on this one - if that’s who he was referring to. But maybe he was referring to someone else.
Will wasn’t defending Jada… Consciously... he THOUGHT he was “defending or protecting her”. Subconsciously, he was defending his manhood and masculinity. Subconsciously, he was demonstrating to himself, his family and to the world watching that 1. He is Enough; to support, love, and protect his wife and family and 2. That that was the right thing a "man" should do... until of course... the moment that he did it. Then he realized he possibly just made the most colossal mistake of his life. As this realization grew, so did his fear. Then, in that moment, he decided that he needed to do something fast to defend the shocking awkwardness that he just created. Meanwhile, Chris is processing the shock of being unexpectedly assaulted announces “Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me”… while Will interrupts him by yelling demands with expletives "Keep ...... mouth!" to drive his defense home. Not just once, but twice! It wasn’t anger; that was the great actor in him that made it look like anger! That emotion was fear of the potential consequences of actions mixed with massive denial that he severely wrong in this decision to assault Chris. 1. Insecurity of his strength as a man (due to his “wife/business/life partner” manipulating him to believe otherwise) and 2. Denial that what he just did was a costly mistake to his reputation, relationships and career. Final thoughts? I have many, yet this was my greatest take away insight.
I believe that Dr Grande addressed quite a few similar thoughts in another video. On this one it looks like he was trying to recap what happened briefly so he could address the subject of Body Language Experts. However, your thoughts may be very valid.
Regarding body language, I would like to add that non-verbal communication varies greatly based on different cultures. For example, in some cultures eye contact is desirable but in other cultures that is not encouraged, especially between people from opposite sex. Some other examples include smiling, touching and social distance. As such, I believe it’s extremely difficult to decode actions across the board because there is a number of factors that influence the way people communicate with each other. A non-verbal behavior that is completely normal and acceptable in one culture may be inappropriate and even hostile in another culture. Wonderful review as usual, thank you Dr. Grande.❤️
It's also important to add that Chris Rock has Non-Verbal Learning Disorder. He's stated in past interviews that he has a hard time picking up on non-verbal cues.
@@anxioussmurf2057 Even so, when Will walked up to him, and Chris said "uh oh" ... I almost thought they were about to maybe do a funny skit together. (Of course I couldn't see Will's face ... but still.)
Good points, but the (few) videos I've seen on the topic they have started with observing the baseline of the person in different situations so they know how that person typically act instead of assuming we are all acting the same.
Excellent analysis, Dr Grande. It reminded me of the Heidi Broussard case. She was killed by her best friend , who wanted to take her baby. When Heidi’s husband was on tv making an appeal for her safe return , SO MANY “ EXPERTS “ were claiming he had killed her because of his body language and by him not “ acting right.” This was completely wrong. He was put through more hell because of such ridiculousness. Love your content !
@@Tam5115 Yeah, even though Dr. Grande's points are valid in this video, let's remember this is the same man who discredited all government released UFO-footage and came to his own conclusion about "optical illusions, hallucinations" etc, completely unable to fathom or accept that we might not be alone in the universe.
@@bethnia9053 Coming to your own conclusions on whether Dr. Grande is really that smart and right (in this case: body language experts being fools who sell pseudo-science with no merit) or if he's actually pretty close-minded and only accepting his very own opinion/agenda on things, while just being able to articulate his points very well & logically. Simple.
I think credible body language analysts make it clear that you cannot ever predict deception with 100% accuracy, and they look for clear deviations from a baseline. These deviations need to happen in clusters to even register as potentially deceptive. The body language analysts I enjoy watching would never claim that scratching a nose means anything other than that their nose was itching. I don’t think your dismissal of any and all body language analysis is fair honestly.
I appreciate the channel Observe because every video he starts with a disclaimer that it is very hard to be sure his read is accurate and he tries his best not to jump to conclusions
Yes, I full agree with this sentiment. A lot of channels on UA-cam that I follow that look into body language often state that it isn’t an exact science and must be considered within the context of all the surrounding other evidence.
I agree with this! Credible body language analysts do not claim to see head tilting as a sign of something immediately and only use positive and negative spikes from baselines from individuals since everyone has a different use of body language and non verbal communication. I find it weird that Dr. Grande would put this on the same line as “magical thinking” and making people think they have a “super power”. Anyone who claims that should need a evaluation from the consumer.
@@munchiekins I love watching Logan too. Especially when Meghan joins him because you know she prepared a torture reel from a terrible show for him to analyze.
I watch Observe and he seems to be pretty open about his methods and that it's something that's not even close to 100% accurate. He also says it's something between an art and a science.
Also the only one who's open about having bias, so much that he always warn you about that and how it will influence the analysis. Human mind is not math. There's no "one fits all" and no dogmatic Truth in the fields that study it. It's all about nuances, context, balance. That's why any single case requires time, has to be carefully studied, and has always a margin of improvement, so to speak. Whoever tells you "I'm 100% sure" about these matters is probably a poor professional and is most likely blowing smoke up your ass.
Exactly. I feel like Dr. Grande is heavily generalizing by saying that “all body language experts” are fakes in this video. Yes, there are a lot of body language ‘experts’ that don’t actually know what they’re talking about, but there are still some that are genuine and truthful. Observe has disclaimers at the start of each video about body language accuracy, and is honest about the different ways signals can be interpreted. Observe also makes it very clear that his analysis could be wrong, and that there is no way for him to know the full truth from reading body language.
I watched a true crime show where e everyone thought the husband "did it".. His movements, linguistics, body language all said "Guilty!" He was traumatized and ruined. 20 years later, when the REAL killer was caught ... well ... better than nothing, but a lot of good it did HIM!
I like this channel. It's near perfectly presented in my opinion. I like the blend of the professional with the casual. Not an easy move to pull off. It has to be natural. You and your channel/uploads are objective, informative, respectful, thought provoking, funny at really apt moments and thus... ENTERTAINING! Which, for me ticks all the boxes for what constitutes a good way to pass 20-30 minutes of my time. I really hope you and your channel garner the following it deserves Dr Grande.
whenever i watch body language analysis, its clear to me that the analyzer is giving their bias as well, but my MAIN take away is that they are "reading" people assuming they are neurotypical. I have ADHD and ASD, and i react oddly in situations, but according to them, id prob go straight to jail because i smirk or laugh when i shouldn't etc. id like to see these"Experts" read a person where they do not know if they person has ADHD or ASD.
Yeah, it would be completely interesting to see them do that. When it comes to this kind of things people completely forget about neuro typical and neuro divergent.
The Behavior Panel members are from diverse backgrounds and frequently critique the observable behaviors of criminals, victims, and witnesses of past events. They have done several assessments of neurodiverse individuals and know to be on the lookout for patterns of behavior that are not neurotypical. In fact, they might spot it faster than frontline police or health workers. They are purely looking at observable behavior. It's the details or nuance in conversation and social interaction that trip the diverse up, not the mundane cues.
I have even watched UA-cam analysis saying Jada was the real person at fault because she was the narcissist in the relation propelling Will Smith to do what he did because right before that he was laughing.

Very glad to hear your analysis of so-called "body language experts." Back when I was in school (around the end of the Crustacean era) there was some doubt about the validity of body language, but they taught it to us nonetheless. In recent years I've seen a number of these "analyses" and found them all more or less dubious, some downright outrageous. I think they can do genuine harm in some situations. Thanks for tearing the lid off this ridiculous practice.
I think body language is vastly overstated as a 'secret' way of reading people. while it might be somewhat useful in finding out deceptive behaviour, it's not as good as the 'expert' claims
Especially since most of the UA-cam "experts" are entirely full of shit. There are (if I recall correctly, it could be less) 13 recognized types of body language that are accepted as legitimate by the FBI.
It helps. It's like saying prints are useless. There is DNA, there is data...it's the same for body language; you just have to accept the limitations of it. And tie it with psychological understanding...
@@NickM_FirstofHisName without the perfect circumstances, dna isn’t a sure fire way to prove guilt. It’s not like there’s a dna databank like csi has us believing, it’s much more complicated and counterintuitive when dealing with cold cases.
No need to be embarrassed, I love Dr. Grande's take on everything. He goes beyond just pure emotion and the science behind why people do what they do. It's certainly opened my eyes on things, and usually the Dr.'s opinion is pretty close to mines (but he articulates it much better of course).
I had already pretty much figured out that Dr. Grande was not a fan of body language gurus from hints in some of his other videos. Although I agree that pseudo-science is a good description of this activity, for once I feel that the criticism was a bit harsh. Wasting peoples' time is endemic these days and some will choose to have their time wasted in this way. Is so much harm done?🤔
I never even watched the video on the slap. Because it's just so much BS. But this is fun. I wonder what it means when one of my cats is a little in the way and I nudge him out of the way by basically putting my foot nearest his butt pushing him forward. Does that mean I secretly wish to kick him in the ass or just get him to move to the left to the right? And if he moves to the left does my cat mean that he's hates me? Or does that mean that if he moves to the right, I've just messed up his ability to love again? Oh God I love this stuff...meowt.
Dr. Grande, I'm a fan of what you share. The FBI would disagree with you on this one. I'm surprised how certain you are of some areas where you have little to no experience. Your delivery is great and often funny. Best of success with what you do.
Recently, I watched several body language videos on the JonBenet Ramsey case. They all came to differing conclusions as to who killed her. So according to body language “experts”, an intruder did it while interrupting the mother, father, and brother as they did it, too.
Mental health experts who are called on to analyze an accused murderer often disagree about their diagnosis of the individual. Including doctors, none of these are exact sciences
For shame Dr Grande, this is one of the first videos of yours I strongly disagree with. To all of these people hating on "these so called experts", most of them (the good ones) will tell you thier readings are only partially accurate and only certain behaviors *very few at this point* have any kind of scientific backing behind them, other ones are often open to interpretation depending on much of a baseline is able to be obtained. (Being able to observe the subject under regular, low stress situations to get an idea of what is typical behavior or responses) I don't know how accurate all of this is with criminal intent ect, but as someone with Aspergers and has a very difficult time being able to read subtle behavior myself, it is so extremely helpful to learn.
I truly believe that The Bahavior Panel is an exception. I believe that they ARE experts who have something to contribute. They don’t keep their “techniques” a secret and they reference published authors.
I watched a few videos of their's and noted a lot of wild, false conclusions. Many of the behaviors they give as definitive signs may actually be due to being on medications or drugs, ADHD, none native language speakers, cultural differences, gender differences, generational differences, variations in social class or level of authority, cognitive impairment, and public speaking training. They are also trying to market their books and classes. I co
I find his analysis very boring and biased because a lot of his viewer are also loyal to and watch the Behavior Panel and find them to be just as credible. I also commented that until recently psychology was also considered a pseudoscience

People who suffer from personality disorderes(and mind you, most of them are not even aware of it) have all kinds of body language quirks that make them look a certain way. But if you asked them how they felt they would always tell you the exact opposite. And I dont discount all body language like dr. Grande but a lot if it is unsubstantial
Speaking as one of the worlds leading self-proclaimed plant language experts, I find it interesting that Dr Grande has nine skyward pointing Cacti to his left, yet he has a staggering THIRTY FOUR skyward pointing Cacti to his right! The Dr himself makes no attempt to hide his two raised thumbs throughout. This normally indicates a man trying to appear balanced in an unbalanced world. An equal number of cacti on each side would normally indicate a need to dominate, this would be a show of control, a stewing narcissistic-rage on account of the need for absolute symmetry of cacti! Furthermore, his raised eyebrows after dropping 'SG's throughout (Sarcasm Grenades) is transparent dupers-delight! I like Dr Grande but I can't trust him wholly, because his Australian accent sounds suspect to me? My accent however is British, which means that I am right and everyone else is wrong remember. Anyway, I have to go now... The nurse is coming! 🤫🌵
I'm glad to see someone critique the pseudo science of body language "experts". As the parent of someone with autism, this hocus pocus makes me nervous. Autistic people often get judged for their body language and lack of eye contact. Much of these body language experts analysis seems to be based on celebrity gossip. And who they like or don't like. Women in general but particularly women of colour, seem to get judged more harshly then men. By these mostly middle aged, male "experts". Bravo for calling this nonsense out Dr Grande. 👏 👏👏
CNN is crying right now, but I am laughing. I have seen someone once compare you to Bob Newhart for your dry wit. I would have to second that comment. You rarely crack a smile but you make me laugh almost every video!
The middle finger is largely regarded as offensive, but not universally. In Japanese sign language it can mean older brother. Some cultures use that finger to point as using the index is considered rude. Other cultures use it to ward off the "evil eye." As to using it to point at a book, turning the palm upward to point at a document or blueprint leaves the fingernail against the surface, avoiding the transfer of skin oils to the paper. The middle finger has a larger surface, so therefore reduces the chance of oil transfer.
What I’ve wondered for a long time is, how do they know when someone is reacting to something going on in their head, that has nothing to do with the situation? Because I personally react to things I think of in conversation, that have nothing to do with the conversation, all the time.
Great Video! I am glad there are body language experts that can deduce that Chris Rock looked surprised after being slapped on live television. Thank you for calling out pseudoscience.
I'm glad you're debunking these channels, I watched the most popular one (5.5+ Million views) and called BS on it almost immediately. The fact they need to keep reminding you they are an expert should make you suspicious right off the bat.
I'm so glad you said that! I unsubscribed from one such channel cause the guy just kept dragging Meghan Markle. Every thumbnail ended up having her in it & I found that disgusting. Using a Woman who was treated so badly by 'The Royal's' as clickbait just turned my stomach. I've never watched any body language expert againe ! Loving your comment, from Australia ✌️
Body language is just a supplement to spoken language. I am an ABA therapist and I have found body language oddly specific to families, classrooms, playgrounds, and other very small groups. In spite of TV and the internet, how we communicate with each other seems to be oddly intimate. When we encounter the same people each day we seem to develop our own cultural shorthand in speech and movement to convey our messages. It's tiny and satisfying and meaningful. I don't know if a behavior expert could even distill it into a pattern of behavior. It's different for each of us in each encounter at each time of day every day. We each have a micro world that we negotiate each day in which we don't bother to be deceitful. Because we are alive but unknown.
At 3:41 when Dr. Grande speaks of body language experts being used in court cases, his inner eyebrows go up slightly. This is a telltale sign of fear. He appears genuinely concerned that some people may have been falsely convicted. Also, notice how his thumbs are visible throughout this video. This shows he is feeling confident and unthreatened.
I disagree, it strictly depends on who you refer to as "Body Language specialist". For example, if we look at The Behavior Panel, those guys clearly know what they doing in their field. You just have to be careful when you choose your "specialist". Pretty much like in any field of science.
Exactly what I thought this was such a disappointing and boring video where he just vented without giving his audience (which if he knew better also tend to watch and are just as loyal to the Behavior Panel ) contradicting the majority of his points PS ironically Psychology was also considered a pseudoscience not too long ago
@@PineappleQTpie although I didn't think it was boring, I do agree he went EXCEEDINGLY hard on Body Language Experts... it's not an exact science...but like you said...they used to (and probably still do in some cases) give psychology a bad rap... psychology had to struggle to get where ITS at today...all of it is a "guessing game" applying what other people have been diagnosed with on someone else because they exhibit similar symptoms. Not all body languages are pseudoscience. For example, we know people who are anxious may exhibit signs of fidgeting and rubbing the hands together uncontrollably. Paralinguistic stuff are a big part of our communication as Dr. Grande mentioned. It gets to pseudoscience when it is so detailed. We just simply have no real scientific evidence about them.
Reminds me of when I heard what a "body language analyst" had to say about the security footage of Elisa Lam in the elevator. They said the way she was moving her hands was like she was talking to someone, which convinced a lot of people that her death involved foul play and another person. I suppose she could possibly have been talking to a hallucination, as I believe she had some kind of psychotic episode, but spreading conspiracies about a tragic death involving mental illness always makes me a bit angry.
Especially when internet detectives get involved and they start to blame innocent people without any responsibility. Like that mexican death metal dude in Elisa Lam case. His life was pretty much ruined.
"Body language analysis" aside, the most clinically relevant and scientifically recognized thing that her hand motions alluded to is the onset of a bi-polar manic episode. Psychomotor agitation. This can also be attributed, as you said, to psychosis, hallucinations, or even the effects of drug use or a neurological disorder. The sensational leap to "foul play" that so many made without any evidence that there was another person even near her is the type of thinking that lands innocent people in jail. Of course any mysterious death should be investigated fully, but when the "body language experts" get involved, the waters get real muddy, and false assumptions start clouding logic. I agree with your assessment, Shroomy.
This new word I’ve/we’ve learned, “synecology” is the study of animal behaviour, so I think that it’s more about reading the body language of a person over time. Which is the case here. We’ve been witnessing their behaviours and mannerisms for ages. I would say they want us to study them, be on the stage ALWAYS! It’s kind of ridiculous. I was watching a russel brand vid on yt and he says, “I mean really, at the end of the day do you REALLY care about all this”? And ultimately no. It matters none, except we’ve followed these folks and admired them for whatever entertainment it brings us. But seriously, who gives a shit?!?……not that I prescribe to all Russell brand has to say, he just makes a good point.
“I’m not telling anyone to get off my lawn in this video. I’m just speculating how I would tell someone to get off my lawn in circumstances such as this.” Or “Remember, a competent determination of whether someone is in fact standing on your lawn can only be made by a licensed lawn care professional.”
Dr Grande. Could you please do a video on the psychologist/s, who are not diagnosing anybody, but simply commenting on what could be happening in a body language analysis like this. Also, please put a link to patreon in the s'crption.
Dr. Grande I am a die hard fan of your channel and of Bella Grande Media; never miss an episode. You always challenge me and give insight to learn from. For the most part I agree with you about certain body language and behavior “experts “; however, before you write them off would you please take a look at The Behavior Panel? They are four men who are highly regarded and experts in the field of body language analysis; two of the men served 20+ years in the military and one an interrogator. Ty so much for all you do!

There’s some fabulous journalists covering the war on CNN, but Dr. G has to get his political slap in. It’s like when he goes off on woke culture, he may have some valid points but it’s very one-sided generalizations.
This surprises me. I’ve seen Ted talks with FBI agents who claim reliable and use regularly. I wonder if maybe as a police officer this type of body language “reading” wouldn’t be quite the same?
Check out the Behavior Panel, they’re a bit different than other “experts”. I believe they are truly advanced and deserve respect. I don’t believe they are pseudoscience.
Damn son, you’re on fire covering this 😂🤣 I finally laughed about it during SNL weekend news skit last night. Colin Jost and Michael Che were on 🔥 the writers did us fans proud 😊
One of the most common body language indicators these 'experts' point out is that when someone says "no" while nodding their head "yes," or says "yes" who while shaking their head "no," it indicates deception. This assertion sounds quite logical, but now I wonder if there's any truth to it.
Thank you for making this video!!! I am suspicious about these body language experts. When watching videos of these experts they expect us to look out for "micro" signals, like the eye winced a little bit which suggests aggression or some nonsense. First of all when I'm talking to someone how am I supposed to pick up on these micro body language signals when I'm concentrating on what the person is saying!! One body language "expert" says he thought the whole incident was faked because Chris Rock leaned in to Will Smith which supposedly means that Chris and Will were in on the slap and therefore Chris was expecting the slap. Nonsense!
“Body language nonsense” - Dr. Grande. I completely agree, and have been thinking the same when watching these so called “experts” go at it. A waste of time. Thank you for debunking this “science” and exposing it for what it is.
I was wondering when someone was actually going to call these idiots out on their bs. It troubles me that the justice system takes these people seriously and use them as expert witnesses. I wonder how many people were persecuted this way. Thank you Dr grande.....this video actually tables the matter head on
Yeah, although my opinion is that there is some validity to the science, the deal of using it in court I hope would only be a fraction of the reason someone ever got convicted. Scary notion.
You're confused. Body language is real. You think federal interrogator is the same as a Walmart cashier. That's your problem, America. You are lazy and uneducated and perpetually defensive about it.
This right here... Have been voicing my concerns about these "experts" for a long time. There is one body language guy (sic) who has it in Meghan Markle so much, I'd go as far as to say, most of his content is around her. Strange isht.
Great exposé on body language experts, Dr.Grande. I watched a few of those videos awhile back and my 'BS' meter immediately went off. This was great! 👍 After the Will Smith drama dies down, I swear I hope I never hear his name again! Ever. I'm so sick of him now, after hearing about him so much. Loved the video, though! Thanks! ❤ 🤣
I have nearly scratched my nose off my face, as I restrained myself from shouting, "Amen", in response to Dr Grande's insightful comments regarding this pseudoscience! It is potentially very harmful if it is taken seriously by those in law enforcement and/or the military! Thank you again!!!❤
So much shade in this video. It's hilarious. "It's like when people watch videos by astrologers, psychic mediums, or when they watch CNN. The audience knows that these people are not telling the truth." 😜 I love you, Dr Grande. Clever *and* funny is a winning combination.
Will Smith: * physically assaults Chris Rock * "Body Language experts": If we just take Will's actions for what they seem on the surface, it's really not quite clear. But we can see exactly what Will was trying to communicate, IF we look at his mouth shape here, and his eyes darting to the left and then down here..." Will Smith: * screams obscenities about Chris talking about Jada. TWICE. * "Experts": "Will is really quite subtle, and it's really not clear what he really means, as his actions and words are not obvious. BUT if you pause it just here on this frame, you can see a slight change in Will's posture which signifies..." Me: OH, FOR PETE'S SAKE.
Hi Dr. Grande, I am so glad you have made a video on this. I have always wondered about the Body Language "experts". After I had listened to their analyses through the years, I eventually listened more and more with a grain of salt. And you are right, it is concerning the use of this method of figuring folks out with managers, law, etc.
“Or when people watch cnn. The audience knows that these people are not telling the truth” Hahaha Always with the dry sense of humor. Keep up the good work Dr Grande!
A credible body language expert would tell you that there are deviations from baseline, patterns etc. No-one (I hope) ever claimed that this is some sort of magic that grants you the power of a mind reader. You picked and listed things that really aren't indicative of anything isolated by themselves.
I think he was saying that's exactly what these people do. Maybe like using a foreign language dictionary in an attempt to find out word-for-word "translations." What's the Spanish word for "Please"? There isn't one Spanish word for "Please." You have to use two words together, usually with a bunch of other words to say what you are politely requesting.
That’s precisely the point. There is no science because there are too many variables. You need a baseline for every single person and every one of their behaviours only to be able to point out when a change of pattern occurs, which doesn’t necessarily mean you know the cause or the meaning of a deviation. Then add cognitive biases and a smart brain that constantly tricks us cause it believes us to be stupid and you have a 50% chance of being correct, making it as reliable as tossing a coin.
Finally a real expert speaks on the subject. Although incredibly funny and entertaining, the truth is there. It is DANGEROUS for people to believe they can determine guilt or innocence just because the subject had an itch.
This is VERY interesting. I watch those body language experts all the time and always wondered if they knew what they were talking about. We know that Dr. Grande takes a scientific approach so I find his take on this exceeding useful.
There is no certain way to accurately determine the actual reason when someone's body language becomes incongruent with what they say. As it turns out, it really is an endless source of guessing and misunderstanding, but police force still use it indiscriminately. And many times they are very wrong
There are lots of quacks in the body language field. Check out the Behavior Panel on UA-cam. They're the real deal and they dislike most of the people in this field for the same reasons you mentioned. It's all about deviation from the person's baseline.
Yup , it’s an interesting channel. they also qualify their analyses unlike the quacks. Also note that they haven’t put out an immediate response. They’ll take their time and discuss rather than dictate. That’s what makes it more interesting to me. It’s more of a discussion.
“It’s like when people watch videos by astrologers, psychic mediums, or they watch CNN. The audience knows these people are not telling the truth” There are tears in my eyes from this one
Thanks for covering Dr. G. I watched one body language video once and was just totally confused. I’m glad you are setting the record straight on body language experts. We need the smart people to come out with videos like this to try to balance out the nonsense.
I cracked up when you told me that some people claim that watching CNN is harmless. Maybe their tag line should be, “We’re not news, but - what the heck - we’re harmless.”
Body language not an exact science but if you see things in slow motion you can see emotions vs intent. It's not any more harmful than other forms of "evidence" & no one gets convicted legally by this. Thanks Dr G😊💟💟
I’d like to know who are the “exerts” Dr Grande is talking about. Because the ones I watch clearly state that body language isn’t a science and that there isn’t one single behavior/non verbal language that can predict deceive.
I follow and watch videos by The Behaviour Panel and Observe. Logan from Observe always reminds people that reading body language isn’t 100% accurate, and with both channels, they talk about establishing a baseline for a person’s behaviour. Sometimes a gesture that is supposed to mean something, may just be something a person does all the time so there is no meaning to it. I think there is some merit to it, but it can’t be relied on on its own.
I started watching a breakdown of The Slap from a body language "expert" a couple days ago, thinking I was going to see something interesting. I stopped after a few minutes of complete faff. They certainly do have the magic power to waste peoples' time. I'm just glad Dr. Grande could turn that around into something entertaining.
Now we just need the body language experts to analyze Dr. Grande's body language while he was analyzing the body language experts' analysis of the Will Smith attack.
I saw him giving thumbs up several times...

I doubt they could get anywhere, lol. Dude's made of stone (said with love).

This is a known response to trying to recall information.
Well, it's up and to the LEFT... so...
Looking off typically means you're going to your memory bank.
Yes
That was… beautiful
What an eloquent and well balanced assessment of the situation.

Thank you for the interesting perspective, Dr Grande.
Edit: The Behavioral Panel-amazing
Thank you Dr. Grande for always teaching me something and making me laugh at the same time.
The Behavior Panel
I love the Behavior Panel… hopefully Dr G wasn’t referring to them because they are the best.
I really enjoy The Behaviour Panel...they have a great rapport with each other.
Subconsciously, he was demonstrating to himself, his family and to the world watching that
1. He is Enough; to support, love, and protect his wife and family and
1. Insecurity of his strength as a man (due to his “wife/business/life partner” manipulating him to believe otherwise) and
Grande.❤️
Rejane - Good point!💯✅
There is no peer-review scientific evidence for body language "science".

Observe also makes it very clear that his analysis could be wrong, and that there is no way for him to know the full truth from reading body language.

whenever i watch body language analysis, its clear to me that the analyzer is giving their bias as well, but my MAIN take away is that they are "reading" people assuming they are neurotypical.
That’s an excellent point. Same as if someone has physical limitations.
Agreed. Those hacks are all kinds of reckless with thier bs.

This guy consistently has the wrong opinion, it’s almost like he’s pushing politics instead of facts.
It helps. It's like saying prints are useless. There is DNA, there is data...it's the same for body language; you just have to accept the limitations of it. And tie it with psychological understanding...

For shame Dr Grande, this is one of the first videos of yours I strongly disagree with. 👏 👏👏

Sure, it's universal. It means that you're telling someone that they are "number 1", right? It's quite a compliment!
@@nonprogrediestregredi1711 ...hahaha awesome!
But what does it mean when somebody points at a page in a book with their middle finger instead of their index finger? I never figured that one out!

Not all body languages are pseudoscience. For example, we know people who are anxious may exhibit signs of fidgeting and rubbing the hands together uncontrollably.
Definitely, there's not always some hidden meaning to be translated.
Especially when internet detectives get involved and they start to blame innocent people without any responsibility. Like that mexican death metal dude in Elisa Lam case. His life was pretty much ruined.

“Or when people watch cnn. The audience knows that these people are not telling the truth”
Hahaha Always with the dry sense of humor. Keep up the good work Dr Grande!
I caught that, too.
Great video Dr. Grande!
Finally a real expert speaks on the subject. Although incredibly funny and entertaining, the truth is there. It is DANGEROUS for people to believe they can determine guilt or innocence just because the subject had an itch.

@@trooblave6173 Where’s the humor in that?
@@paultheaudaciousbradford6772 Couldn't agree more, Aud.
Body language not an exact science but if you see things in slow motion you can see emotions vs intent. It's not any more harmful than other forms of "evidence" & no one gets convicted legally by this. Thanks Dr G😊💟💟
Lucy Lawless? I had a crush on you in middle school. ❤
@@XanderShiller what is she gonna do with this information?

Tell that to the exchange student who was falsely sentenced of murder in Italy, lacking any other evidence, than her body language.
I’d like to know who are the “exerts” Dr Grande is talking about. Because the ones I watch clearly state that body language isn’t a science and that there isn’t one single behavior/non verbal language that can predict deceive.
Another great video on this incident.
We can’t forget they are professional actors 🤦♀️
And others claim that psychology is a pseudoscience. My only conclusion is, you see what you want to see and you hear what you want to hear.
13:38..Marvelous closing to another great analysis..Thank you, Dr. Grande! 🌵
