    I love your comment about Peter being a jerk sometimes, but choosing not to be most of the time since that's the responsible thing. The Raimi films did that very well. Even before he got the black suit and became emo Peter. Like him saying, "I missed the part where that's my problem." When the promoters money got stolen in the first film. I can't imagine Holland's Spider-Man being that sassy.

      I hate how common this take is. I understand why people love the 90's cartoon and the Raimi movies but those don't encapsulate the most common Peter Parker we've seen in the comics over the last 40 years. Spider-man Twitter (aka Raimi-only Army) is such a drag on this universe. This cartoon and the Tom Holland movies have many flaws but Holland's depiction of Peter should not be getting this much flack. As someone who has been buying and reading Spidey comics since I was 10 years old, it makes me not want to interact with Spider-man fans anymore.

    I thought it was fine. But i really am sick of this take on Peter as a adorkable teen with a bland generic teen nerd personality. When Peter in his early years was more of a jaded teen.
    Edit: People keep acting like I’m summarizing the entire early years history of Peter by saying his only character trait was that he’s jaded. That’s not what I’m doing. He gained more confidence and had more fun as a result of being spider-man. He was also still a nerd. But he could also be kinda standoffish at times. Especially early on. And if you think he didn’t feel jaded in his early years, read some of the original Lee ditko issues. Even conway’s Peter could be standoffish. And it’s not like I want spider-man’s personality to just perpetually default to that norm. But I am also so sick of this awkward cutesy personality for Peter. It’s so grating.

      Early years Parker was pushed around, won one half of the origin story lotto, tried to make it big and got the other half of the origin.
      Breaking into the Baxter Building, picking fights with Johnny Storm and Jolly Jonah, stressing about not just school life but life-life as well and still standing up to it all or pulling together schemes with that big brain to make it happen. And the guilt that drives him to do what is right. A lot of that is core to Spider-Man.
      Both Spider-Man the animated series and Spectacular knew how important that stuff was. And the last couple of Spider-Man shows just didn't get it. Still I didn't find these first couple of episodes nearly as grating as Ultimate or Marvel's.
      Scientist, nerd, a little bit of jerk, terrifyingly broke but still emotional that's high school Spider-Man. And yeah I'm kinda tired of having this dish, but it's nice to see a seemingly palatable recipe for a change.
      But God I'd like to see college or post grad Spider-Man.

It was a personality trait that I find so fascinating, but it is sadly missing in more recent interpretations.

  • @JustSomeMexicanwithaMustache
    @JustSomeMexicanwithaMustache 6 днів тому +377

    I honestly can't give this series a chance when the writers completely misses the point of Uncle Ben's death. It's like if Bruce Wayne's parents died of a heart attack and that still somehow leads Bruce to becoming Batman. It completely undermines why their death is so important to the characters.
    These writers are basically saying there is no reason for Uncle Ben to die, which is Bull$hit. If either Rami's Peter or Web's Peter let the killer go and he killed someone else who Peter knows, you think he will care as much, no, even less so if it was a random person.
    The whole point of Peter being responsible for Uncle Ben's death is for him to learn the world doesn't revolve around him and that his actions have consequences. He even said to himself in the original comic that he didn't care about what happens to anyone else, he only cared about his Uncle and Aunt.
    Peter being a selfish dick for one sec caused him everything. Because of him, Aunt May lost her husband. Because of him, his family has money trouble. Because of him, his Aunt is worried that something similar is going to happened to him. Because of him, he lost the most important person in his life.
    Even the MCU mentions Uncle Ben's death in Captain America Civil War when Peter was talking to Tony, because even they know his death is important to the character.
    Not having Uncle Ben's death be Peter's fault completely misses the point of Uncle Ben's death.

      But what do u classify as "today's standard"? The other popular animated superhero show that comes to mind is Invincible....and it being 2D doesn't really help. I'd rather swinging with actual animation than png being dragged across the screen to show flying.

    • @NotAustii
      @NotAustii 6 днів тому +36

      @@yatharthrai4658 By "todays standard", shows like Arcane, Batman: Caped Crusader, and Creature Commandos come to mind. I think Arcane is actually an amazing example of 3D animation being used to it's fullest and wouldn't benefit from being 2D. X-Men 97 looks good but FNSM and X-Men 97 are both trying to emulate an art style that was made for 2D animation so why not just go for it. Leonardo Romero's (FNSM character designer) art style looks awesome but doesn't translate super good into 3D.
      Also, I think Invincible animation is okay. Should definitely be a lot better considering it's popularity and how much money Amazon has. But remember that scene with Agent Spider in Invincible S2? That's a great example of what Spider-Man could look like in that animation style, especially if you watch Browntable's redrawing of the scene with Spectacular Spider-Man.

      There's plenty of 2D shows that look like garbage and are animated cheaply. I don't think a high budget will save your animation if you have weak art direction. 2D or 3D.

      I do think Andrew Garfield is more accurate too.
      But saying that, I mostly agree. It would actually be different and interesting to get a more accurate Spider-Man portrayal in adaptations, but so far, we don't really get that a lot.
      I also agree that I am getting kind of annoyed with how much people are acting like Spider-Man is an "everyman". Because in a lot of ways he isn't. For the reasons u mentioned, his genius (which gets dumbed down/downplayed in stuff sometimes sadly), some of the family stuff he has going on, etc. But for some reason Spider-Man gets treated as just an "everyman" and I find it kind of bizarre and not really accurate (and gets rid of some of Peter's complexities sometimes) imo.
      And like, him not being "everyman" in a lot of ways is fine. Those traits, skills, etc. of his honestly make him way more interesting. But some people get so focused on trying to fit him to be "an everyman" that some of his interesting traits, skills, etc. get ignored and/or downplayed. And it is sad.
      Here is to hoping we get more good Spider-Man stuff and Spider-Man portrayals in the future.

    What you describe about peters character is exactly why I think andrews is the best. He gets mad, he practically beats up flash out of spite, he’s an ass to aunt may, yet he’s a very clear and great man and hero when he chooses to be. Tobey only really had that during his venom arc and maaaybe his flash fight, but that was really just self defense. This is something Tom hasn’t covered at all and it’s what really stands out to me from andrews take on the character. He feels like an emotional teen who just got his uncle killed in a way nobody else does, with his vengeance, his anger, his selfishness, and yet by the end he’s still a good man.

    To the point of wanting to see Peter be his "worst self" and wanting to give in to more selfish impulses to then learn and grow from such mistakes, (1) we're only 2 episodes in. Let them cook. And more importantly, (2) often with people, including Peter, we fall into that trap of giving in to selfish impulses when the stress of life really takes root, when doing the "right" thing is rewarded with just more stress. When Peter hits that low point, that's when he'll fall into that trap as a way to cope/unburden himself, and that will be a major teachable moment when the consequences of such selfishness comes to fruition, even though there isn't any malice behind such "self-care."
    A staple to almost every version of Spider-Man is the constant juggling of life's responsibilities and stresses that Peter often struggles to manage. That's what makes him so relatable. Yes, "adorkable" personalities are getting to be overdone in media, but I think as stress begins to mount, that adorkable sheen will give way to burnout, and when he eventually rises above that burnout, a renewed sense of self and confidence will smooth out the more abrasive sides to the adorkable personality. But neither do we want Peter to be completely rid of that dorkiness. He is a high school freshman after all. That's the time in one's life when guys are the biggest dorks fumbling through life. He has nowhere near the maturity to be less than that, no guy does at that age. If he was still behaving this way as an adult, then that would be a major problem with the writing.

    I just REALLY can't vibe with how the show looks, if you really want to go with a comic book art style then please just do it in 2d. Maybe it's just that the backgrounds don't look detailed enough or the fact that they have little to zero animation going on in said background but it just feels like the characters are cut-outs on a string being dangled around a panto backdrop, like you can FEEL the separation of character from the actual scene and it doesn't feel good imo.

    > The most compelling aspect of Peter Parker is that he has those options open to him, always - yet makes the choice to be better than that, even as it makes his life harder every single day.
    imo this was the thesis behind Man of Steel's Superman, one that Jon Kent teaches - he is in no way obligated to save humanity - and yet he makes the choice to do so. I think that it does make his character more compelling. Audiences didn't like it tho

    Modern media doesn't let protagonist, or any good guy, be an asshole for a bit. Some of the all time BEST stories/characters let the main lead actually be mean, troubled or even unabashedly selfish at times. Sometimes doing actual bad things because they want to. You can't let characters grow if they are "flawless" to begin with.
