heyy it's me on the main channel and i would like to congratulate dave for landing the role of snow white in disney's 2026 remake of their 2025 remake of snow white (1937) 🎉
omg! what you said about finding disney content on youtube is soooo true!! I've literally been trying to find an objective opinion of the new snow white movie, or even just commentary that actually talks about the CGI issues rather than 'not white = bad' !! It's SOO hard! Life wtf!? Why are you the only youtube actually talking about this film in a sane way! 😂
For anyone who doesn't know, disney actually was planning to cast people with actual dwarfism, until peter dinklage intervened. He complained that the movie was not ''progressive'' enough, by casting a latina snow white which is breaking the norm, but still having the audacity to want to use people with dwarfism to play dwarves. Quote '“You’re progressive in one way but you’re still making that fucking backward story of seven dwarves living in the cave. What the fuck are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.'' Which then prompted Disney to change their mind and have him as the ONLY person with dwarfism out of all 7 dwarves! Which then got even more backlash, and now thanks to his insane take and Disney being too dumb to listen to it, they ended up with NO people with dwarfism and CGI instead! It's ridiculous.
Idk how they “consulted with people with dwarfism” and then decided to make all the dwarfs cgi instead of hiring real people as if they are some fantasy creatures that don’t exist irl.
The “people” with dwarfism was probably just Peter Dinklage. I remember an article years ago where actors with dwarfism were upset at him. Essentially, he complained about the use of dwarves and said it would be offensive. Actors with dwarfism were angry because of how hard it is for them to find work.
Gives real Sia "Music" vibes - where she said she hired Maddy as the star, after the original autistic actor kept getting over-stimulated by the production. So they replaced the autistic actor with someone who is not autistic, rather than working with the autistic individual to manage their disability *FOR THE AUTISM MOVIE*.
It's a deliberate strategy - Disney keeps using minority casting to shield their terrible, soulless remakes from criticism by baiting racists into hating on the film and hoping critics will want to distance themselves from the bigots.
I have to admit that the whole girl-boss “she’s not dreaming of love, she wants to be a leader!” Is getting old. Give her more autonomy and a personality, absolutely. But you can’t just take what little personality that a character has just because she isn’t a specific flavour of roll model. Some of us did grow up dreaming of marriage and family, and that’s okay. Not all little girls want to grow up to be CEO’s. Why not make the story about found family or something else that honors the original story rather than another girl-boss makeover? There’s more to women’s empowerment than putting us in positions of authority. The point of feminism is to have choices.
word. It's crazy all these films with female protagonists are the opposite of a century ago yet still completely conform to one role. Instead of the housewife role its "everyone's a girlboss" with no flaws. I love both when done right, and I don't understand why we can't have both or have it done well.
See, this is something Once Upon a Time got right. They gave us a Snow White that embodies all the original ideals of the character *and* made her a badass. With characters like Snow White, it’s so easy to have your cake and eat it because the original characters are so basic and bare bones. You can layer so much onto them and make them as complex as the story calls for them to be. But if you’re taking away what was originally there only to replace it with a totally different character, then you might as well just have it be a new character. Even with previous live-action remakes, this is something Disney understood. Cinderella wants an escape, Belle wants to live up to her potential, Ariel loves the human world. Why change Snow’s wants? Doesn’t make sense.
Hard agree!!! Although the original snow white is obviously dated it is still very dear to my heart, and there's nothing wrong with a girl who has dreams of true love etc.
Yeah I have no issue with characters being changed to be people of color i just want them to stop 😭 to me they don't exist there are no live action disney films in Ba Sing Se
Honestly this is one of the few I’m ok with. Snow White deserves to actually be a character and have a personality. Growing up I hated Snow White because she didn’t have a personality. All she did was clean and get saved by a man. We owe it to the next generation of young girls to show that women are so much more than just an ideal for men to save
In Snowwhite and the Huntsman staring Kristen Stewart, Snow White wasn’t saved by the Prince and she was the one who defeated the evil Queen so it’s not a new concept.
Yeah but that wasn't Disney tho, I think. So of course they would deviate from retelling the Disney version. But if Disney themselves are retelling their own original versions, then of course people would expect a replica or improvement over the original. So any major changes to the story will just upset Disney fans.
@@이마크-r8e And the origanl snow white it?!? NO so that line is redundant asf. The older disney princess are NOT THEIR STORIES, Disney has been known for taking other people's stories and making it fit whatever narrative they wanted to fit so they can make money and people like you are questioning why they do it again? And in 50 years y'all going to be questioning it again. Disney's original Snow White was 14 years old and let's not even act like it would have been a problem for them to cast a pale white 14-year-old person to play this role and casting a age accurate right man to play the prince because I'm sure that would have been completely fine since y'all want everything to be exactly how it was. People who act like they don't know Disney is known for redoing and redoing s*** don't get to complain about when they redo shit🙄🙄🙄
@@DefyReality-ll2cg But the more important fact of the matter is other people and other companies are able to use these same characters and recreate the story however they want to recreate it, so why are so many people acting like it's a problem when Disney does when they have been known for doing it for years, and want to have the nerve to call it original if these characters were original nobody in the f****** world would be able to use them, there's a difference between Disney Channel princesses and Disney Channel original princesses.
As a poc I genuinely disagree. I don’t understand how no one sees this is a performative and money hungry act. They are still using us. For money because they know it will cause discourse and promote the movie. How about new actually good movies with new poc characters??
I agree with this 100% like they didn’t have this issue of the live action remake Cinderella nor beauty and the beast the movies did well because it stuck to the original format including the original character designs because I do feel people are more interested and will wanna watch the movie more if they did do that. I wanna see some new poc stories is well because wish was a great movie same with princess and the frog and more
Please don’t take this for rude and condescending, but I’m just glad you can see this for what it is no matter what you look like cause I could see it from day one even though I can’t physically see, but I think you get my point and the reason I say that I could see from day one because I have an described version of snow White and the descriptions don’t match they do not match never mind the fact that I have also listened to the book. Listen to the book of Snow White via audio and again descriptions don’t match with anybody.
@@jackjuniorsmart8171 I don’t have anything against POC stories. I loved Coco I loved Encanto princess and the frog was good, which was taking it or leave it but that had nothing to do with POC. I just didn’t care for it but you’re right they do need to make some new ones and I need to stop changing establishing characters. That’s what turns people off any kind of people it doesn’t matter everybody’s getting mad at this and for damn good reason.
Tbh the most annoying thing is that there are like 200 stories/fairytales in the Grimm collection alone, over 500 in Arabian nights and over 100 written by Hans Christian Andersen, but only like 5 get adapted over and over again to the point they’re completely unrecognizable. Just pick a different story, some of them are great even if not necessarily kid friendly (OG Snow White would give kids nightmares). Big shocker but fairytales from the 19th century will be very christian centric including the iconography and color themes. Seriously you can bet that if someone is described with anything gold or white, they’re usually the good guys (which is kind of messed up, but again context of when and where this stuff was written). Just going to point this out but lips as red as blood, hair as black as ebony and skin as white as snow would look like something out of a horror movie on a real person, which is why those descriptions are usually allegorical not literal. It’s just kind of tiring that most of these live action adaptations often have very little of the original story left, then do semi-nonsensical race swapping for controversy and engagement only to the deliver an often subpar experience. Again, you don’t like the story then pick a different source material, there are literally hundreds in the public domain. But stupid controversies and name recognition probably sell better, which makes the whole race swapping thing very insincere. It’s not about representation, it’s about money. Also ruin everyone’s childhood, Snow White is probably loosely based on a real person (technically there’s two and they probably got mixed together),the daughter of a count who was extremely beautiful and presumably died of poisoning. There was also political stuff and a prince involved. The dwarves are most likely based on children deformed by the harsh labor conditions of mining, not people with dwarfism.
Tbh the colors are more there as literary devices. White for purity, red for love or danger and black for temptation and death. Her mother is around those colors when she wishes Snow White into existence, which is also foreshadowing, because three drops of blood and three times the queen tries to kill her. Fun fact: in older versions of the fairytale, it’s her biological mother not her stepmother that envies her for her beauty (yes, it’s beauty, which in English got translated to fair as in beautiful not fair as in just, probably to make the text flow better).
@@4.1132 look at Ana Paula arosio and tell me if snow whites describtion would be scary. No. Show white is just a boring character with details about her appearance,
@@AnikaSutidze Very pale skin is not the same as skin that is literally the color white. Same with lipstick, which again Snow White‘s lips are described as naturally the color of blood. Basically if the whole thing was literal you’d be looking at something akin to an albino on crack or sparkly vampire on crack (snow tends to be kind of reflective) with bloody lips and black hair. Even if not scary, it would definitely look strange. If you think she’s boring that’s your beer, however maybe don’t generalize for everyone. The whole point of the character is to be saintly and pure to a fault to act as a foil to the character of the queen. The story is about envy and good vs evil. On a side note, a lot of Grimm fairytales are really short, so you can’t really expect a lot of character development xD
@@4.1132 okay but what's so wrong in wanting something close to that? It's not even about the Grimm Fairytales. It's about Disney's version (also their first movie). They still went out of their way to retain her red, yellow and blue colour palette. Cinderella (2015) is literally a live adaption of the Cinderella DISNEY made in 1950 and that was well received because she literally looked like Cinderella from the animated movie. Disney is remaking their movies which were adaptions of the fairytales. In modern day, they're not remaking the fairytales, they're redoing their own movies. Why can't we get quality like Cinderella 2015 that added aspects that were lacking in the 1950 version while still retaining the true essence and story of the original animated version? What's so wrong in wanting that for Snow White? We never had an issue with how the animated one looks, didn't we? Why? Because she fits that description of Snow White fairly well. Nothing is wrong with just wanting what the original adaptation looked like. Don't play dumb, acting like you don't understand what people mean or want.
The woman who voiced Snow White in the original was an aspiring singer, but Walt Disney had her sign a contract for like $1000 to never act or sing again so that the “voice of Snow White” was EXCLUSIVELY the voice of Snow White. Not a lot of money, even in 1939, and she basically had to sell her dreams away in exchange for one role. A very Little Mermaid type deal tbh. Whenever anyone talks about ruining the “legacy” of Snow White, that’s what I think about. *[EDIT IN RESPONSE TO COMMENTS] I was initially wrong about the amount of money and corrected it above. It was about 10 years ago when I learned about it and my memory clearly isn’t the best. I can’t give you a specific source (I just dug up my notes from the history of film class I learned it in), but it shouldn’t be too hard to find a reliable source.*
I did NOT know this!!!!! This is the real crime of this video. Free OG Snow White, as someone who grew up singing & acting this is heartbreaking. Who knows had she not taken that role would she have gotten 100 more?
As a Latina, I just feel like they're using us for "brownie points" and to spark controversy, by casting a Latina for a character named after the "snowy white" color of her skin, in yet another soulless live-action remake that nobody wanted, of a rather already problematic story that nobody needed in the first place. No thanks. I do not feel represented at all in this traditional German story just because the actress is half Latina like me. Just give me new PoC characters that I can embrace and quit the performative BS, Disney.
@@Pee-z9n I think that was the most infuriating part for me of the Bud Light fiasco. They completely bowed down to the haters and this year they didn't even stand 10 meters from a rainbow. That shows me that they didn't give a f*** about pride, the LGBTQ+ community or Dylan herself.
@@707isnotfound I don't really care how you call our ethnicity, as I don't think that makes any difference in the way that I (a Latina born and raised in South America) feel about her being cast for the role and what I feel their true intentions were with that move.
I'm a POC and some characters can be cast as any race and it doesn't change anything. But some characters like snow white, have always been described as "having skin as white as snow and lips as red as apples." I want to see Snow White when I watch my movie. I love my brown girlies and my pale girlies. It's ok to cast someone as white. Its starting to seem like they use POC as a troll to cause controversy and get easy attention for their films. It's soulless. I liked the Disney Princesses when it showed how all women can be princesses. From different cultures, and fables. They are ruining what made them all unique.
Yeah, it's weird that people are ignoring the ACTUAL reason lol. With little mermaid, people argued that she could be from anywhere... well this is snow white so what's the argument now?
People forget that the reason the mirror said snow white was more beautiful is because she is kind 😭 and the evil queen is selfish. That is why she asked for her heart as a proof that she was killed, that is what makes her more beautiful, she has a kind heart
YES EXACTLY 😭 people also forget that the prince not being seen throughout the film can be seen as him symbolizing the reward for Snow White’s kindness, perseverance, and pure heart. I don’t think he was meant to be taken literally at all. It’s also annoying when people outright say it’s weird as if people in 1937 would also not be grossed out at a stranger kissing them out of nowhere. The original target audience also had values ya know?
@@squambobBecause she doesn’t think Snow White, the original movie, is a love story because that’s a whole 14 year old girl and a 34 year old man. But you know, mfs love pedophilia and they will tear apart anyone who talks about it.
My biggest problem is... There are like 3 really good live adaptations of Snow White, where she has a lot of agency, saves herself and STILL can have romance and be feminine. The Way they promote this movie sounds like the original was the ONLY adaptation of the fairytale EVER.
Also, as someone that's German. If they would just make ab adaptation of the original fairytale and not the Disney Movie - that would have been amazing! Disney is the one that made the story so creepy in the wrong way in the first place!
Disney always does that. ALWAYS. its kinda ridiculous, but every movie they make and remake and rebrand and redo - "for the first time in history" UGH. its tiresome.
I'm Latin American and brown, and I honestly can’t grasp why some people back every profit-driven, fake-progressive move Disney makes. Give Snow White back to white people. We deserve authentic, original stories that reflect true diversity.
Right? Like truly there are so many cool stories from all around the world that Disney could be mining for future classics. They have 0 idea how easy it would be to get back into slam dunk territory -pick classic stories they haven’t already mined and gutted -pick musicians and artists with unique visions -either profit now or eat shit but wait 15 years for the kids who grew up with it to get weirdly obsessed with it like they did with stuff like Atlantis and Treasure Planet, and THEN profit
Right? They even did Tinker Bell dirty when the fairy universe already has black fairies. Even if it's a children's movie, that doesn't mean Disney gets a pass for performatively choosing POC actors. They literally can adapt POC fairytales instead.
Super Amen. With all the stories and legends from all around the world, there's no lack of source material to make wonderful stories for cinema from... IF you put in some effort... something we wont see Disney do anytime soon :(
I mean... Her name is snow white because she has pearly white skin?? I would be just as confused if they cast a white horse in the role of black beauty. Why not make a live action encanto or princess and the frog if they want poc roles? Why not make new movies with folklore of poc's that haven't been told yet? We don't even need a live action snow white at all, but it didn't need this (imo) pointless rage bait that makes no sense to the story.
Honestly, Cinderella is the only live action remake that understood the original movie. It was the first one they made, and they learned the wrong lesson from it. The live action Cinderella worked so well because it stuck to the original story, but added beautiful actors and amazing costumes. But instead of using live action to enhance the original stories, Disney decided the success of Cinderella meant they could completely change the story and the takeaways and people would still go see the movie because it had the same character names. Like, Belle doesn't read because she's a feminist, she reads because she wants to be anywhere but her tiny village. (Do not get me started about the corset slander.) Mulan didn't go into the army because she had special powers, she went into the army because she loved her family so much she was willing to risk her life to save them. Disney tried to update them for the modern day, while completely missing what made them popular in the first place. Given that Snow White isn't a great story in the first place (the success of Snow White was mostly driven by its innovative animation techniques) and Disney botching every other remake since Cinderella, I don't really have high hopes for this remake
the issue is how performative everything is from big media groups. they claim to be progressive but dont show it in the slightest. they make female characters who are unlikable and perfect, so they can claim to be progressive, while in reality ignoring the good representation for women in media that people actually want. they race swap characters and introduce characters of other ethnic backgrounds only to make said ethnic background their only trait rather than fleshing them out, same with disabilities, learning disabilities, mental health conditions and different sexualities. and because of this bad representation thats only introduced so said large media groups can claim to be 'progressive', reactionaries can use this as ammunition back to claim that diversity is an issue and use it as fuel to solidify bigotted opinions. No one is interested in creating genuinely interesting female/queer/ethnic minority characters because groups like disney see it as easier to just throw in a boring, inoffensive and cookie-cutter character with any of these traits and/or a character who's only actual traits are being female/queer/an ethnic minority so they can 'look progressive' while ignoring and in some cases even supressing or replacing actual good progressive representation.
If you are interested Lindsay Ellis has a great video about how Disney remakes rebrand themselves as "progressive updates of classics" to justify their existence as anything but a cash grab.
There is nothing wrong with changing the stories to make them more interesting to modern audiences who, obviously, will have different tastes than previous audiences. Remaking a movie shot for shot but live action is boring and pointless. The problems is not that they are changing the story, its that the changes the make either make no difference and are pointless, or actively make the story worse by making no sense or feeling disjointed. Snow white would make a terribIe movie if they kept the original story. Literally nothing happens, and as deangelo said she has zero agency the whoIe story. Thats fine for the time it was made in, but it would he a snooze fest nowadays. I just hope the changes they make to the story are actually good and interesting and make the characters more dynamic
My theory is that Disney is doing terrible live actions with POC just so they can say they tried to do more representation but lost money so they don’t have to pretend to care about POC anymore.
real. like they don't need to make live action versions of every movie to have representation, just make new movies?? encanto was an amazing movie, why can't we just make new things and grow that way??
dinklage was probably tired of dwarf roles being limited to 90% fantasy and/or tolkien-esque with axes or pickaxes, but he has that common human problem where we're terrible at nuancing on the spot when we're upset and clearly *no one* in charge of the journalism or the 'creative' decisions around this had any interest in interpreting that as intended.
I agree with you. That was my thought, too. He didn't successfully articulate all the feelings he had, and what they ran with was clearly not what he meant.
@@georgehernandez2156 He didn't. The studio is at fault for not double checking stuff. What he said makes it sound like he was against the flat troping, not against casting people. Like sure, maybe he didn't want this remake to exist because you can't escape the tropes without altering the whole story. But, if you're doing a remake, maybe you should alter the whole story?
Or he is just a complete idiot who thinks too much of himself and doesn't get that dwarfs in fairy tales are ACTUALLY NOT AND NEVER WERE SUPPOSED TO BE PEOPLE WITH DWARFISM.
just be warned now, apparently having a disney+ free trial means if you die due to allergen issues in the parks you can no longer take it to court in front of a judge 🤢
The thing about that is the arbitration clause was specifically for tickets and downloads, and Disney Springs is non-ticketed. Their lawyers are just dragging it out however they can manage to bleed this guy dry so they can get a smaller settlement out of it when he's more desperate for cash. They know they can't win, but they can still try to fuck this guy over.
This is a null andd void statement in the united states. In there it cannot legally stop someone from suing the ToS makers, even if you say "agreeing to terms of service means you can't sue". However suing disney may be difficult for the reason of lawyers and having tons of money.
a lot of people were saying that Rachel wasn’t Latina enough to play Maria in West Side Story, now people are saying she’s too Latina to play Snow White. she literally cannot catch a break.
Don't know about that first incident but in this case the fairytale, and I checked that in the German version, literally says "as white as snow" in the fourth sentence and that she's named after that trait. If they want to take some creative liberty then whatever, but the stupid part is Rachel Zegler making a public comment where she straight up lies about it or has never read the original version because she claims that snow white is named after a snow storm. That is 100 % not the case and it's not even difficult to interpret, that phrasing in the fairytale could be understood by an elementary schooler. If you treat culture with that sort of respect you shouldn't be surprised about backlash.
Honestly I really wish they had amplified Snow whites existing positive traits instead of trying to make her more stereotypically strong. Her main strength in the original is resilience, her step mother wants her dead and shes just trying to survive. She uses her pre existing skills of cooking and cleaning because she was forced to be a servant. It just feels like Disney is saying leadership is the only way to show strength and it absolutely isn't
Yes! I find it kind of tiring that the modern image of what a woman should be puts more emphasis on traits that men stereotypically value and less on internal strength and vulnerability. I mean, women like that definitely do exist, but it just sucks that we completely got rid of more classical female characters instead of emphasizing the strength that was always there.
I have a theory that Disney does feminism super badly (with stuff like this) on purpose in order to make feminism look bad. It's like they intentionally misunderstand what would actually make us more equal sometimes
Thank you. Not every role model character has to be a super driven leader type. Snow White was my favourite Disney princess growing up. She is young and learning and naive but there’s nothing wrong with that. And there’s nothing wrong with a simple love story. Also they could have more backstory between the prince and Snow White so he’s not a “stalker”.
I think it’s more of the fact that they think leadership can only exist in certain ways. I think it’s completely valid to show leadership like this. But also leadership can and does mean cooking and cleaning. It’s not some minuscule task. These are talents and skills. And those literally can provide and take care and lead. Moms are the leaders of a household for multiple reasons. I always think it’s bs when ppl act as if strength (physical or mental), resilience, leadership, independency and being driven is something that is masculine bc it’s just not masculine (this is not what “makes those women masculine”, bc masculine would entail being more loud, maybe even vulgar, more reckless and going out of the box, having physical strength that presents itself in a more raw, destructive kind of way and that would be completely fine to see in a woman bc women like this exist and should be shown and are rarely shown). Just bc history and society in their misogyny have always highlighted men and limited women to like two spaces and have completely kept those in the dark doesn’t mean that those traits above are masculine. Not even with the label system. It also annoys me how ppl only talk about “feminine strength” when it’s about female characters being shown in “masculine strength” (which already is often falsely assessed imo) and them invalidating women that are like this and the much needed representation of this. It’s hypocritical. And completely ignores how often feminine female characters are badly written bc they can’t even write traditional women appropriately and just reduce them to being women but with sexist archetypes and act as if helplessness, weakness, dependence, uselessness and irrelevancy is apparently femininity (which is actually so disgusting). That being said it doesn’t make sense how Disney completely rewrites characters like this. Bc if this is a woman that is feminine and you make a remake, then you need to highlight those strengths and show that they are more than just trivial, unimportant and irrelevant. Instead of changing her. But again ppl also need to start realizing that being driven, strong willed, independent, resilient and strong (physical and esp. mentally) are not masculine things. Bc I think this understanding is lacking A LOT! Also the fact that ppl ignore that we have iconic male characters who actually have relevant feminine strength that gets highlighted and shown, celebrated but no one would ever admit that those are actually feminine strength and features… So it’s a bit difficult when feminine strength gets nothing, but disrespected and sidelined whilst also female characters are limited to being feminine and whenever feminine strength is there, it’s shown with dudes and it’s suddenly treated as an extension of masculinity, for some to not internalize this misogyny.
Right??? And I imagine pre 1930s the prejudice against people with dwarfism was insane. I know they saw them as "evil creatures". The 7 dwarves in SW must have done a great deal to dispell thos prejudices
my problem with this remake isn’t that Snow White isn’t White, my problem is that whoever did costuming probably DID have that problem. Seriously, that dress is atrocious, that hair is horrible, and did they not even put a bit of mascara on that poor girl? Not even mentioning the CGI dwarves haha
I did some research and realized Hollywood does CGI “fix” most of the costumes we see on screen. Pictures and behind the scenes usually show how unflattering the costumes really are 🫠. Guess a LOT of EDITING goes into it.
That is how I felt about The Little Mermaid. Disney made it cheap because they new they would make money regardless cause representation. Disney might have wanted a black Arial but those in charge of costumes, design and production did not and you can't convince me otherwise. The only live action done right is Sleeping Beauty.
Peter's frustration comes from the fact that people still act like dwarves are fantastical creatures that live in the woods and work in caves. It's inherited ableism thats been around for centuries thanks to fantasy novels and plays. Peter has had to play a bunch of dwarf and elf characters forever because Hollywood hardly ever consider little people for any other roles, and re-engaging with a movie where dwarfism is once again seen as just a whimsical little tidbit sets back conversations revolving around dwarfism in media.
exactly! i think a lot of people are just Not getting his comment, and are trying to pin the blame on him for disneys awful choice. his point is that he doesnt want them to be fantasy creatures, he wants the dwarves to be treated and portrayed like real people, with character that goes beyond one note traits. he was frustrated that disney would go for making things progressive and make that a point, while also still treating little people like fantasy creatures. in the original film, theyre not much different than the talking animals other princesses get, of course he would want more for the characters! but people saw that and just wanted to blame a man who doesnt want the only roles for little people to be ones that strip them of being human
Either way with or without intention, Hollywood weaponized what he said and generalized it to a degree that he is oneof the few dwarves still.abl to get work.....what you're saying sure wasn't elaborated on
It’s basically the ableist version of the magical n3gro trope unfortunately, like their only purpose in the story is to help the main character discover something abt themselves, have jokes be made abt their disability and have them basically be walking jesters for the audience’s entertainment. I fully understand Peter not wanting to play into that seeing that he wants representation for ppl with dwarfism to continue to move forward and movies like Snow White contributed to the stereotypes put on them and stopped them from even getting leads in the first place.
I feel really bad for Peter Dinklage. He tried to speak up for his community and instead Disney took away seven jobs from said community and Peter is taking the blame online.
He could have talked with others in the dwarfism community and they could have come up with a solution together and presented it to Disney but instead he weaponized his power and let his opinion stand as one for everyone in the community and now he's screwed them
Yeah literally, the way he literally said that he wished people with dwarfism would be allowed to play rolls that aren't fantasy characters and be given more opportunities to play different characters and Disney just went okay fine we'll take away these roles too
I think you missed with this one! Snow White’s named specifically derives from her skin color, so unlike with Ariel, the appearance of Snow White does have relevance to the story. To say nothing happens in the movie is also disingenuous. At the beginning, Snow White is forced to run from nearly being murdered. The whole plot of the movie is also the Evil Queen literally trying to kill Snow White. People have a problem with Rachel Zegler’s portrayal the same way people had a problem with Emma Watson’s portrayal - needlessly changing a kind and gentle character to a girlboss, ignoring how that character was already strong in their own right.
"she has to be white because she's named after her white skin" and "she has agency because she runs away in terror" girl. i watched the movie too.. nothing would change if her skin was fucking purple and that running scene was not an example of agency. you just dont want her to be a woc
I'm mad on Rachel's behalf because what the hell did they do to her hair 😭 all that disney money for an adorable bob wig and that's the look they went for 😭
Snow white ironically could actually benfit from a remake-not a live action one but an animated one, theres alot of contact the crew wanted to add to the original snow white including more scenes devloping the prince but they didnt get to add them, it would be cool to see an animated snow white reboot that adds in those scenes
I think we’d all prefer 3D animated remakes than just a bunch of live action remakes, even though I wish they would just make more cartoonish animated movies
Honestly this is where I stand on a lot of the remakes. I mean I think a lot of them are just unnecessary in general, but a lot of the classic Disney films have elements that translate HORRIBLY to live action. And I don't get why they insist on it. Cinderella worked, but it's both an easy story to adapt to film, and Disney had already put out like 2 or 3 retellings of it that are all still fairly popular in their own right. But usually they just look *so much worse* than their animated counterparts. Especially the travesty that was Lion King (2019), which felt like someone trying to replicate the Broadway production while ignoring that theater is a wildly different medium. Even in Beauty and The Beast, which I actually thought was okay, the costuming just looked cheap and uncomfortable.
they would just make it the awkward 3d animation they've been doing lately. id rather see it in 2d, but that's near impossible. if they were having a better approach on their recent animated features i think this would be ok, remaking the animations as animation, but as it is now and how they're already thinking about how they do their animated films... it would be trash just like the live actions, if not even worse. animation is a work of so much love, it is so so easy to notice if its being made halfheartedly; if it isn't genuine, the reception would be somehow even worse than the live actions. also, the animated features already exist. i do think that remaking them animated would be a shot to disney's own foot.
It was like one of those, 'your wish is granted, buuuut...' type scenarios. In this case, your wish is granted, but now every Disney movie is just a worse remake of the previous one.
@@nadaadd7093 yes, but that's why it's an adaptation. Because they adapted it. I think that every movie made from a book has changed in some way or another.
Ah yes. But until we get more clarifications, we aren't really unsure what he meant by that. And probably he meant that no one really tried to break the mold with dwarf in any fantasy media, since they are almost always associated as miners / crafters who live in caves. He probably wanted a new fresh take on dwarf that is not a mere miner / crafter.
@@dodixaber8968that would make sense if it was in general, but when it’s about this story in particular it just makes him seem ignorant to Snow White altogether.
Okay, an actual question, what’s the point of changing a feature on a character if it doesn’t enhance the story? Like yeah cool we got a new person of color character but why not make a new character instead of recasting one where they named her Snow White because her skin was as white as snow?
right? It would've been a lot more meaningful for POC if it was a new story/movie centered around them. It feels like forced diversity, and anyone calling disney out for it is automatically being called racist
I can literally only name two little people a-list actors: Peter Dinklage and Warwick Davis. And now that Warwick Davis is getting old, it feels like Hollywood just wants to replace him with Peter Dinklage, rather than casting more little people in roles
do people really think that literal DISNEY would let the girl go around saying whatever she wants???? she is cleary saying what they told her to.... she is just being the punching bag by delivering the message the Disney, as a company, wants to put out, so they can appear foward
Exactly!! These phrases were definitely things that Disney wrote and Rachel was directed to say. The same thing happened during the promo for the live action Beauty and the Beast movie when Emma Watson said Belle was going to be an independent woman inventor. Except no one shit on her when she said that because she is a white woman. Also, Gal Gadot literally said the same thing about Snow White in the same red carpet interview!!! This is obviously something both women were told to say when they were asked about the movie, and Rachel got the brunt of the hate because she is a POC.
Exactlyyyyy Im surprised people are so gullible. You think this unknown actress made a billion dolla company direct snow white?? She has been playing female leads who are feminine and fragile. Why was it that evey single actor was saying the same things she said? Cause disney paid them, thats their job, they have a contract to do whatever disney says. All the no prince no romance and everything she said is not something she wanted to, but she was made too. If yall hate cancel culture, why are yall doing the same bandwagons???Yall are so gullible. She has a contract and was paid by Disney to say all those things, cause its a press and she's an actor. Yall think an indie actor could direct an entire movie?? She doesn't follow the things that she says, she never meant that. She literally has been playing fragile and feminine characters and has a boyfriend irl. Leave Rachel. Dont hate her cause you hate disney, she is just a pawn.
@@GigiM_winx I saw someone call her a hypocrite because other roles she played were in distress and had romance. Like what? It’s a fictional character. It’s her job to be someone she isn’t.
@WoodwindBuddies yeah, cause she doesn't mean what she said seriously. She was paid to say, irl she is a fragile person and is gonna get married soon. So yeah, it was all a facade
Rachel literally created all that hate by doing the worst interview possible. Disrespecting and straight up insulting the original, on which the entire project you're a part of, is a horrible idea, no matter what you look like.
The original was weird as hell though?? Yes, it had beautiful art and music, but let's not ignore the fact that Snow White was always a very empty character.
Have we considered the fact that the disrespect of the original film is actually coming from the producers, writers and directors? Not the actress whose job is to act out the part on the page in front of her? Did she become a Disney executive when I wasn’t looking?
@ShannonMyers-r4i she's also apart of the problem. People from the beginning have been hating on Disney and started hating on her when she started having those horrible interviews
Ngl, I frankly no longer care. The Live actions lost their magic, I'm not gonna waste a dime to see it. Zegler has a great voice, so that absolutely fits for snow white and I'm sorry for her but I'm not gonna watch it. And for those complaining, no one's forcing you either. Disney listens to money. Stop giving them money.
I understand the notion of her being "not white enough" in the context of snow white (the name ? Hello?) being famous for the appearance of the character. The story is intertwined with her appearance being "hair as dark as ebony, lips as red as blood, skin as white as snow". However, if we look at all the fumbling and bad ideas and just overall bad record with the live action films, I think the skin tone of the actress is the least of our worries. Disney is pumping put content left and right just for the sake of it and we haven't had quality movies in decades (very few exceptions not included). And not to even mention the dwarfs.... I can't.
This is my thing, no issues having whatever race character, but why call her snow White when she won't be? Like even a Caucasian white person with a tan would be technically wrong for the role! Just call her something else not snow White - no idea how this would be done so I guess we're suspending disbelief. Makes me think of 2018 cats film with idris Elba as macavity, with the song stating 'mcavitys a ginger cat' while idris is right there... not a ginger cat.. Just change the lyrics!! Obviously these points are the bottom of importance in discussions like this but it's still crazy to not change small details so it makes sense 🤷🏼♀️
Seriously. You don't even NEED A WHITE(AS IN RACE) PERSON FOR THIS. White skin is found in Asians as well, and other races. Get them?? You're filling the diversity quota and staying true to the original. I'm tired of Americans confusing colour and race all the time.
Yep it has nothing to do with ra-cism but rather this exact descrption and integral line of her story. I believe it was that she was born in winter and her mother didnt survive the childb-irth. It's kinda like casting an asian or african to play Merida the scottish princess. Not respectful for the story.
I feel like Disney are just purposely creating rage for buzz by race swapping European folk tales at this point. Especially when Snow White is titled after the fact that her skin is as white as snow. There are so many stories from Africa, Asia, South America, Native America and other POC cultures that deserve their time to shine. It’s just putting these mostly young female actresses who have worked with Disney since they were very young in the line of fire. Don’t get me wrong as a German I love me some Grimm brothers tales but the world is much bigger than just us.
girl shut up, its giving "get your own water fountain" its not the 1950's we don't have to have "our own stories" to make ppl like u happy and content especially when you're so bothered by the color of someone's skin. It's a FICTIONAL story. Stop acting like it's erasing something from "culture".
I was JUST coming to the comments to say this. It's almost like they are doing this on purpose to get free marketing for their movie, fuck that free marketing being at the expense of their stars' mental health.
Peter Dinklage just wants people with dwarfism to get any role when they are talented. He hates the fact that actors with dwarfism only gets roles when the characteristic of that character is just that. That they are a dwarf. He literally just wants talented actors to get roles, regardless of fucking height. He is the only actor that I’ve seen that’s gotten roles that don’t bring up his height and that’s only VERY Recently. Even Warwick Davis worked his ass off and isn’t remembered anymore and never got away from that stigma.
As a POC who loves snow white I was just upset that they took a character named after her physical appearance and changed it. It also seems like another one of disneys attempts at making POC feel represented in main media when they're just recycling stuff instead of creating new stories for them. This is exactly like when they decided to turn Cleopatra, a historically white lady, into a black lady instead of making a documentary about other historical black ladies who did so much for their society. It's all just pretense to show how politically "correct" they are.
Cleopatra was Egyptian, casting a European to play a woman from the Middle East would have also been just as inaccurate. Rachel is at the very least 75% white, that’s a white woman. She herself says it, her dna says it, her family, everyone but yall can see that she’s white 💀 half of these interviews yall are seeing were filmed in the middle of summer ofc she’s a bit tan. If you see her in winter/ fall she is more pale and almost the exact same shade as Snow White in the original cartoon. If anyone was wrong it would have been Walt Disney with the original cartoon cause in the animation she wasn’t at all “white as snow”
@@ITSMETHESHEEP Cleopatra was Greek in terms of ethnicity not Egyptian. There is speculation she could've been 1/4 Egyptian but even then she wouldn't be black. Besides that doesn't change the fact that so much money was put into a race swapped version of cleopatra to empower black people when they could've used the stories of other actually black ladies who've made history. Also I think the animation made a pretty good point of making her white lol
@@ITSMETHESHEEPCleopatra was Greek from the Ptolemy family (descended from one of Alexander the Great’s generals), and the Ptolemies were very very inbred. So pretty Greek.
As a brown girl, I wanted to say that Disney is taking the easy path. It is clear that they want to deliver a message or prove that they keep up with the youth of this age and its ideas, but their application is wrong, or more correctly, they are not making enough effort. Why is Snow White represented by a brown girl? From the name of the movie Snow White! If you want to give appreciation to different nationalities and the differences of people, why not make a new film that expresses them and is specific to their lives? To me, it seems that Disney is not making any effort and is just trying to silence people as little as possible
Exactly. It's not as if they haven't done it before, either! Mulan, Encanto, Coco, Moana, etc. Those were wildly successful and well beloved by many, including me. It's not that we're upset because a Latina is on screen. It's the fact that Snow White is our childhood, and it's logically inconsistent to have a person of color to play character literally named "Snow White". It's clear that Disney's taking the lazy route. They've done it for years now, so I'm done with their shenanigans. There are better animations popping up in other companies and other countries, so I'll be spending my money to support those instead.
Wasn’t Peter Dinklage just saying “why are we remaking this arguably problematic and not very interesting old movie, the movie doesn’t need to be rehashed at all”…? He was politely saying “let’s just not” and everyone intentionally misunderstood what he was saying. 🤦♀️ Anyway, I feel the interwebs have been undeservedly blessed with all these video drops from you! It actually makes me nervous?
Saw a video yesterday straight up blaming him for the cgi dwarves and taking the actors with dwarfism their jobs away Literally in a tone that he called up Mr Dipsney and demanded any actor associated with the dwarves to be fired immediately
There's an old idea from Tumblr, where Snow White is a dark-skinned black girl with snow-white _hair._ I wish Disney had gone in that direction instead, it's a great subversion and it would've been great to see something like that from something like Disney
Hey DAngelo, usually love your takes but I feel this one is maybe a little surface level. I have no issues with Rachel playing Snow White, she can play it well, has a good face for it, and can definitely sing it. Her comments are most likely just reciting what Disney told her to. HOWEVER her statements on the movie are concerning, she said she watched it maybe once… didn’t like it at all, and that it was bad. Why would anyone want to watch a movie you made when you’re shitting on the material? Snow White is a simple story about hope, perseverance and kindness. The very essence of what made the original beloved is being changed. Is it perfect? No. It feels very much like the essence of what made the character good is gone and we’re being told she’s bad and shouldn’t like it but like this one instead. It is just a movie, I know that. And women do need to be shown in positions of power, but why do they all have to be? Can Snow still be humble and kind instead of a girlboss? It feels contrived for the most part and it’s okay if a movie wants to change story, but this one feels shoehorned and poorly written. Disney seems to be more concerned about cashing in on old IP and rewriting every princess to reflect what made Elsa and Anna so popular and completely forgetting that good story telling with memorable characters is what makes their movies iconic. If every character behaves the same and has the same motivations for power and “I don’t need no man” it’s flattening the spectrum of what people want. People should not be upset over Rachel’s race or beauty. The new story, the cgi, and the god awful costume design is what people should be annoyed with.
you’re so right on this. i think that snow white can be strong while also being in love, as can any woman or man. men aren’t seen as weak when they fall in love in movies so it’s weird for the double standard to appear with women. also as a writer, strength is a broad term that encompasses many different traits. perseverance is a trait that represents strength and snow white is the definition of this. her being kind and gentle and motherly is also a part of her character, but doesn’t diminish her strength and just feeds into the patriarchy that rachel feels that way and wants to change her characterization entirely to fit a new mold created for women, that the only way to be strong is to act like the stereotypical alpha male archetype that none of us even like and harms men too. i think rachel is ignorant and disney is just lazy and disrespectful.
Thank you for saying this! I don't doubt there's racism online, but most of the criticism I've seen of Rachel is concerning her attitude and disdain for the original movie. Even if you don't love Snow White, hearing those remarks makes her sound arrogant and unappreciative of the role she's playing. She criticizes the lack of women in power (it's a story about an abused girl?? And the most powerful person in the kingdom IS a woman!!) and the focus on romance (she sings one (1) song about her crush and then ends up with him). Clearly the problem originated with the writers, though, because Snow White had literally ONE (1) personality trait in the original-kindness-and they removed it! Like D'Angelo says, the only part of the original where Snow White had agency is when she cleans a house-and that's important. This girl just survived an assassination attempt; she is having the worst day of her whole life (which is saying something given she was raised by an abuser), but she decides to clean someone's home so the orphan children she thinks live there can experience being cared for. Keep in mind that the Queen forced Snow White to be a domestic slave for her whole life, so cooking and cleaning is the only thing she knows how to do-and she's smart enough to see how that skill can help her survive by exchanging her labour for shelter. She uses the thing that trapped her as the tool of her freedom. That IS empowering already. It also shows her kindness as "inner beauty" compared to the murderous evil Queen, affirming that she is the "fairest of them all" and better suited to rule. If you want to write a story about a bold girlboss teaching men to clean, then write it! But don't call it Snow White. It has nothing to do with the themes of that story and doesn't make any sense in its context.
I see where you're coming from but I think it's important to keep in mind that the target audience for this movie is children. I'm sure there are many children's movies that are deep and complex and the characters have nuanced personalities and dreams... But we can't expect every child to grasp those stories imo.
@@OurLadyOfSorrows4 it’s a very important point to remember for sure. The original was specifically made for adults to forward the capabilities of art and animation in the world of feature cinema so a part of me hopes that the company that was once capable of forwarding the industry would keep the same energy. They’re definitely not aiming to do that with this remake.
Thank you for saying this! I agree with you wholeheartedly I believe that a women can be great while still being in love with a man or having a side male character. It's not necessary that she has throw away all the aspects that make snow white, the snow white we love.
Right??? I'm not saying it shouldn't be respected, Mulan, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid (didn't like the racism there but whatever) and Beauty and Beast? Understandable, but I never seen dudes get this defensive about Snow White before, like jfc that movie was a showcase of animation, not really for the story and characters (all of that is fine, but the movie is fairly outdated like Bambi)
@@bobtheball5384 i know a lotta people hating on the movie are annoying, but to be fair that's the first time that they put a BROWN actress to play a character named Snow WHITE.
Except they do because Snow White is what put Disney on the map... their keystone creation. So yes, a lot of people do care. A TON of people care. And Rachel is horrible, I say as an Afro-Latina. She was a horrible cast...Gal gadot saying she wants to be prettier than rachel? OKAY LOL.
If not for these comments on a *D'angelo* video (??? like who invited bigits) of all places, I would have assumed the hate was industry plant for publicity. And then some genuine responses falling in line. But no people are psycho
Snow White's mother pricked her finger and the blood landed on the snow. She made a wish that her child would have skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony - hence the name. This actress is beautiful and talented, and deserves better than to be set up as ragebait.
I just want these remakes to stop disrespecting the animated source material like they're better than them. That's what really bugs me. Yeah theyre from a different time but i keep saying this whenever this topic comes up, Snow White WAS ahead of her time. Most of the rubber hose animation coming out of the time with women or young girls in it were sterotypes. Either the nagging wife, damsel in distress, or a duplicate of their male counterpart (mickey and minnie). The women on the ink and paint team even suggested adding blush to Snow White and the Queen, which seems like such a pain in the ass but it worked. Snow White was at least a 13-14 year old girl in an abusive household that was happy no matter where she went. She cleaned the cottage because she thought children lived there. And wanted to do something nice for them thinking it be a good exchange for a place to stay since her stepmom whated to rip her heart out and put it in a box. And sure theres a prince that saves her but my god Disney was terrible at animating men properly until like Sleeping Beauty with Prince Philip. The Prince characters at the time, Charming and Snow White's Prince dont even have that much screentime and yet the focus on on "being saved by a man" is constantly in the forefront about what's wrong with the older movies. And that's just surface level feminism at best...
This is a very wholesome take on the movie i must say. Its nice to see it from a different perspective. Its definitly from its time in regards to how snow white's portrayed, but yea i agree its more nuanced than "she was saved by a prince so its bad". Especially considering, as you point out, the prince barely exists. In that sense, snow white does feel more focused on found family for sure, its like a slice of life story tbh lol
It just hurts my heart hearing the same thing over and over from these interviews. These people would not pass the bechdal test. Y'all realize that by talking about not needing a man, you're still talking about a man. There are other aspects that make up being a female human and it's degrading to be reduced to only how my worth relates to a man's.
There is a problem with her being brown but not for the reason most people are saying. Disney is very obviously race swapping women in major roles in their movies to create talk around the film, and it works! The little mermaids trailer got hella views and hate watchers. It’s putting poc actors in uncomfortable situations for more revenue and media attention I don’t understand how people can’t see that it’s very simple. Edit bcs some of yall r annoying me. Disney is directly recreating one of the most important films in their catalog. It’s a historical monument in animated history. So it makes no sense other than negative buzz to hire and actress that looks nothing like the original. ‘But in (x) Snow White movie blah blah’ idc this is Disney remaking their OWN movie 😭😭 Snow White is a free ip to recreate under any studio there’s going to be many different versions of her. But this is Disney’s version. That’s the difference pls for the love of god use ur brains. ‘No one has red hair’ brother wigs do exist that’s the whole point of a costume and makeup team! Hope this helps!!!!!
She’s not even brown though, she’s light medium beige, I’ve seen Caucasian women that color, Greek people that color, Darker Italian etc. etc. she’s the wrong shade of beige that’s it, that’s the problem with people because they know she’s Half Colombian which again isn’t a race and brown is not a race.
this lmao. the way people keep insisting that disney is turning "woke" and catering to a "woke" audience, meanwhile they cancel any and all of their shows for so much as featuring a bg character in a rainbow tshirt or just straight up leaving all of their poc leads out to dry in the name of publicity... like they do not care lmfao - their only priorities are toy sales, and maintaining worldwide viewership (which requires appealing to very bigoted countries like china and russia)
@@LolaDelMarCaribe realistically she doesn’t suit her animated counterpart. Thats a fact. Why not cast someone who looks like how the original character does? Fairy-tale Snow White is _seven_ when she gets nearly murdered and then abandoned in the woods. So you could absolutely do a shot-for-shot remake of her characterization from the 30s, plausibly - and then just _let her grow up._
I really don't mind race swaps especially in fantasy franchises but them casting a brown girl as a character NAMED after her fair skin was purposeful ragebait for publicity and extra views. At the cost of POC getting hate, as usual. As a kid I'd always imagine Snow White as East Asian, or at least half-Asian. They could've done that if they really cared.
It's a French and German fairytale predating the 17th century, how likely do you think snow white is an east asian person in that context and why should disney be the ones deciding it
Interesting, I can kinda see what you mean by the Asian thing though I've never thought of it before! They could have literally had it all, incorporating POC in a way that enhances the story. But instead we have...this..and a main actor who insists that the original was trash. Sorry I'm ranting now, but I don't know why everyone instantly dismisses the original Snow White's character as shallow. At 14, all while she was being mistreated in the castle, and isolated out, she maintains a positive attitude and even apologises for crying because she is meant to stay bright. She's a representation of light in the darkness and hope in the face of adversity. During her stay with the dwarves, she demands the them to wash and show her clean hands before thinking of having dinner. This post goes into more detail, but when the facts are all laid out like this, it feels like people deliberately ignore the nuances of her character to vilify her as a conventional damsel-Which returns to your final point that disney doesn't seem to care. www.reddit.com/r/disneyprincess/comments/1aqp8p9/a_character_analysis_of_snow_white/
Tbh I don’t think your commentary captures why her and Gal’s comments rubbed people the wrong way. I personally felt relieved we seemed to be moving past GirlBoss feminism in general because that always felt like another way of flattening women characters. So her words gave me flashbacks to when people thought making a woman infallible and giving her a sword equated to having respect for women as opposed to trying to actually treat women as complex humans, and I felt like others were feeling the same thing from her and Gal’s comments.
@@frtunecookie This is a video about a movie, this comment is talking about how a lot of women are written in movies. If you want non 1st world problems go read the news or something I don't even know what you expected
People are less mad that she's brown (Even though that's a big deviation form the source material.) and are more angry at Rachel's entitlement. It just looks bad all around.
I think a big part of why people are upset is because they keep taking old IPs and changing them to be something they’re not. You can have a story about a female character trying to become the leader she knows she can be without slapping an old Disney princess IP over it in hopes that it’ll increase profits because of brand association. The more they regurgitate these IPs the more it takes away from all of the works under said IPs.
That’s my issue. No one complained about Frozen being about a girl who was the hero. Milan is an all time great story. People like female driven stories, but Hollywood would rather fake progressiveness by just changing their classic stories.
And those absurd complains are playing right into it? Is "Little Mermaid" even out already? K don't think I've heard anything about it (or I forgot) after the initial complaints. And it will be the same here. It may be financially successful, but it will never mark anyone's spirit.
and that’s a totally fine opinion to have. I think what he’s saying is that that isn’t RACHEL’S fault. some people have taken her promotion of this movie (where she says talking points given to her BY DISNEY) and blamed her and hated her as if it wasn’t Disneys decisions.
@@torijeri and you’re absolutely right I’m not discounting that I’m more talking about the reason for the misguided outrage towards her if that makes sense
tbh disney doesnt deserve for any side of the political spectrum to fight each other over like we can all agree its a shit company lets all move along lmao
People with dwarfism hardly get any roles because of the able bodied standard set in hollywood. When the story of Snow White coincidentally has dwarves in them, the disney company decides to make them cgi as if small people only exist in fantasy and aren't actively looking for jobs... 💀💀
The thing is that the "modern snow white" has actually already been done and it was fantastic. Mirror mirror was a beautiful movie with an independent snow white who doesnt get poisoned and instead saves the prince and wields a sword and beats the queen on her own by being a badass because her dad told her she could. Rachel's direction isnt as out there as people seem to believe
It's the fact its a remake of the DISNEY SNOW WHITE. That idea itself is ok and yes Mirror Mirror was great but since this is a remake of DISNEY SNOW WHITE people want to see that. Not an exact copy obviously but you know they want to see the major story points.
Can Disney please just make movies based off of non-European fairy tales instead of race-changing the old ones? Like there are so many cool African and Asian legends and folklore that they could use, instead of casting a brown person as a character who's name is literally a description of how pale she is. I want to see a movie about Queen Amanirenas defeating the army of Caesar Augustus (she's actually a real person by the way), not badly-done live actions that offend people on both sides of the political/culture aisle

as a colombian woman, not even I want this snow white. not only are the live actions trash, but snow white is literally referring to her skin color. Disney using the diversity card to pull in people to these bad movies is getting so annoying
@@dime1012the thing is, live action remakes of Disney movies are notorious for being bland at best and absolutely awful at worst. They just make them because they seem safe, they can bank on nostalgia, they don't need as much creativity as originals (which, tbh rarely are original as well, so they adapt an adaptation) and they think they can get some brownie points by casting POC and using girlbosses while getting free controversy PR. If they were genuine about being diverse, empowering and inclusive, they would do things differently. But they aren't genuine, they just want money.
This is the only D'Angelo take I disagree with for the most part. Controversial take, but anyone that views the princesses as hopeless and representing warped misogynistic ideals hasn't actually paid attention to the movie. None of the princesses were passive. They all had dreams and hopes, regardless of the situation they were in. Each princess had their own personality, and they each showed their own strengths. Snow White herself voiced, "If I cook and clean, they'll let me stay." This was her having agency and personality. She was kind, thoughtful, and feminine, and a lot of people take these traits as a weakness. To say "People hate on women for existing" is an insane take when Snow White's character and essence are being trashed on because she doesn't have masculine traits - aggressiveness and assertion. Being soft-spoken and feminine shouldn't be looked down upon, but it is. My main problem with Rachel Z is her attitude and beliefs about Snow White. How are you going to represent someone you don't understand? As for race, hot take, there's a particular physical description for Snow White. Is Rachel Z light-skinned? Yes. But let's not pretend she has skin white as snow. If they wanted to put a POC, they could have revamped it like an old Tumblr post that had Snow White be dark-skinned but had HAIR AS WHITE AS SNOW. Is she beautiful? That's not an argument I care for. If they really wanted to make a remake of Snow White, they should have gone in another direction. Having her stand up for herself and fight isn't a new concept. They could have just developed a different plot for her instead of trying to remake the original with new, progressive ideals. It's upsetting that they are remaking classics to fit an agenda instead of creating new storylines with new characters. Instead of making Tinker Bell black, they could have created a storyline for Dessa, the lightfairy in the Tinker Bell movies. Instead of making Ariel black, they could have created another mermaid with a different plotline. Where's the logic in making Snow White a POC while simultaneously ignoring Dwarfism and steroetypes associated with it? At this point, the remakes being created are poorly executed fanfictions from greedy, braindead writers and producers.
This isn't a new "woke" take at all. My mother was complaining about Disney princesses "waiting for a prince to rescue them" when I was growing up in the 1970s.
Small correction, the light fairy's name is Iridessa. Also, Rachel has the same skin tone as the original Snow White in the movie, so I don't think "skin as white as snow" needs to be literal. It's not even important to the story's themes. Snow White was fair and beautiful because of her heart and personality, which the witch (who was paper white) lacked.
@monbub If you seriously think that Rachel Ziegler has the same skin color as Snow white, then you must be blind. As a Latina, people want their own stories. Not this lazy ass effort of representation.
People are mistreating the actress. She didn’t write the screenplay, she wasn’t the casting director, she didn’t produce the movie. I hope we can all agree that an actress taking a job is never really the root of the problem, and yet the performer always bears the burden of the online hatred
I always thought Snow White was named Snow White because of her super pale skin, so I was a bit confused about the casting choice. Tbh being an East Asian myself, for the longest time I believed that Snow White was a Chinese or Japanese princess because of her pale skin, black hair and high-pitched anime voice. That being said, I'm 30 years old now and just can't bring myself to be mad about the skin colour of a fictional character. Maybe the live action version of Snow White was given her name because she was born on a snowy day. Maybe her parents just love snow. I don't really care.
that’s the thing too. even if she were like you described, and they made her east asian, people would STILL be pissed off about it because she’s not white. those people are trying to claim it’s “because she isn’t pale” but they deadass just want snow white to be white. if she were a pale POC, they’d still be pissed about it.
Okay I actually like this idea too. Making snow white an Asian character. Then again, I agree it will also have terrible backlash because of how it will be completely rewritten from a European folklore.
I'm black and I don't think the actress has dark skin, she isn't literally pale white, but she isn't dark enough that she can't play Snow White. That's just me.
@@tj6800yup, and the actress is a pale poc. I saw a comment that said the only thing that would make it worse is if it were a black woman. Like why are black women always dragged into something. I just don't understand why they couldn't just put red lipstick on her for them ruby red lips. Plus her hair looks for brown in the movie when they could just give her a black wig lmao
7:05 what these people don’t realize is that she probably could not say anything that disney didn’t want her to. they’re likely encouraging her to criticize the original story as a way to restore their image, if anything
I have no issues with the modernisation of old classic, especially ones as old as Snow White but I really wish they could come up with a different character trait or motivation for the leading ladies than 'want to be the leader of X'. That's what they did with Jasmine too. They take a character and go 'oh no she can't just want love gotta find something else... what makes a strong woman?? Oh I know she wants to be the queen/king/sultan!' and do the same thing every time. I do love the actress they casted she looks great in the role.
I mean, that is Snow’s birthright. she doesn’t have any brothers, her father is dead, and (from what I recall) her stepmother is rather cruel as a leader. i’m also pretty sure that the stepmother should technically be a temporary regent just until the true heir to the throne is old enough to take over, cuz stepmother isn’t royal blood. and it’s partly that reason it leaves her to plot her stepdaughter’s demise. She doesn’t want to lose the power once the “fairest of them all” ie most beloved turned 16 or 18 or whatever.
That in itself would be more interesting of an angle than just 'wanting to be the ruler she knows she can be', making it about how cruel the step mother is and how she has seen the way she misstreat the people and wants to make life better forthem would at least be substantial... But I doubt they will go that route
@@MadamMelonMeow also what the hell personality did Snow White HAVE in the original Disney version? Like, besides "she's kind and naive"? ...actually thinking more on that, no, even if it's her birthright the original disney version of her is completely unsuited for leadership, she's going to just be gullible and end up someone's puppet in some kingdom dispute and just get married off to whoever. The best Snow White will forever be Shrek's, because she literally hellsings her forest minions to MURK a bunch of both humans and fairytale creatures during the princesses' break-in while IMMIGRANT SONG plays.
The “phisique du role” is one thing and influencers don't really understand the story behind Snow White. A video that is not only superficial but also misinformative and politically biased, not everything MUST be politics, especially if we talk about art.
The sigh of relief I sighed at NOT seeing a live action Pocahontas movie on the list @ 1:50 says alot about how low I think Disney will stoop for a dollar.
I honestly wouldn't mind it if they used this as a chance to right the wrongs of the original film they could keep the conservationist aspect of it as well as the music but changed pretty much everything else in a hard reset of the animation film and rename the movie and characters so I no longer have to pretend like I didn't love the soundtrack to the movie
D’Angelo this is the first time I realized Dave is actually the head statue behind you & not the bunny boy stuffed animal I truly don’t pay enough attention fml
ur telling me disney couldn’t find seven actors with dwarfism in the entirety of the united states😭 like come on. there are some charters that are just written to look a certain way, and the dwarfs are written to be short. like that’s a substantial part of the plot😭 and the fact they just made them CGI instead. that just makes it seem like they think they’re a fantasy creature that doesn’t exist. and it’s LIVE ACTION. why are we using animation for people😭

In defense of the mirror, the whole point is that while the Queen is very much a baddie, so is Snow White, and she's also beautiful on the inside, and therefore more beautiful than the Queen. What was the mirror supposed to do, lie?
@@StarDreamsStudios no lmao y’all are making up your own versions of the story. The queen was a shallow person and only cared about outer beauty and fairness. Which part of the story tells us that the mirror considers inner beauty? Absolutely none. That doesn’t even make sense, why would the mirror quantify how good a person is and count that towards beauty? If the queen and Snow White were equally beautiful and the only thing the queen needed to do was to be a better person then doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose of the story??
I like how "fans" likes to pretend like this is Disney's original story. This story is old and if people want to make a change they can do whatever they want. You don't like it, don't pay to see it. I haven't bothered with any of the remakes because I think they're dumb. It's not hard to avoid bullying the cast
I agree. I haven't really seen anything Disney ever since the Pirates of Caribbean started to become an endless dumb mini-series (or "cinematic universe") instead of just a fun movie or two. Likewise I completely lost any interest in Star Wars after the first set of "prequels" and thus the entire question about Disney being make Star wars "woke" or whatever seems just beside the point. Because it seemed like Disney as well as most of Hollywood around 15-20 years ago just decided to only make endless remakes and sequels and "prequels" and "cinematic universes", and in short keep beating the same dead horses forever and ever (also at the time Pixar was the new cool kid in town). And I just hated how everything became "franchises" instead of independent stories already back then so I pretty much haven't been to the cinema much ever since.
Exactly. I personally feel like people are too entitled. Remake or otherwise. Plus the orginal Disney version is not going anywhere. Fairytales always changed between people as they were shared via voices before they reached those who wrote down one version they had heard
absolutely. it’s disgusting to see people hate on actresses of color like rachel zegler and halle bailey when they were casted as disney princesses, when these people could’ve just went on their day and watched the animated version instead 🤷♀️
Im a black woman and i grew up learning that Snow White, whose skin was WHITE AS SNOW and lips were RED as blood. Disney is still continuing down this path of virtue signalling to capitulate to the minority instead of the actual fans of the original work. I dont understand these writers and studios that take the original works ie. Snow White, The Witcher, Lord of the Rings, - and want to turn it into their own interpretations because it doesnt mesh with "modern ideals". THEN WRITE YOUR OWN STORY and stop being a parasite of these classic works. All you do is lose money and reputation. All it exposes nowadays is how lazy and cowardly writers are now.
I’ve seen so many projects made by black people that feature different mythologies from the African continent, some with a modern spin but most of them aren’t picked up. Its real raw talent and work but it seems companies don’t want to invest into such project which is bull. In short: disney and other big companies led mostly by white old men don’t care about representing different cultures, they just want quick buck.
thank you, as another woman of color this is ridiculous. we deserve our own stories, not to be shoved into a classic piece for more engagement. i could relate to Encanto but never to Snow White. it's not my story. she's german lmao
Rachel Zegler was the star of the newest Hunger Games film, and in my opinion she ate that entire role up and left no crumbs. I know this comment adds not a whole lot, but If you were like me and struggling to remember what you had seen her beautiful face in before: It was in: The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes.
It seems to me like Dinklage was trying to fight against the concept that all the dwarfs are just working in the mines and living together in a small space. It is a pretty dehumanizing thing to make every single dwarf in the movie be one that works in a mine and lives in the same house with every other dwarf in the movie. Basically the portrayal of the seven dwarfs is not at all progressive in terms of dwarfs themselves. That is just my take. I could be wrong though.
Yes that's exactly right, he just said how backwards it was how they were named like adjectives and they had no depth. But the film was already in production and no actors were hired in the first place so nobody lost any job, there weren't any in the first place which is sad. Finally I see people getting it because I've been trying to get others to see the whole pictures since it started 2 years ago.
Do you imagine that the seven dwarfs were humans with dwarfism? That's not in the original story or the 1937 Disney movie. They were folkloric creatures from European mythology.
@@LoneStreet It was suppose to be a simple fairy tail....they weren't supposed to have deep depth that wasn't the point of the movie. It's supposed be a charming animated fairy tale that's it. It wasn't "backwards".
Honestly, a lot of people I know have a problem with Rachel playing Snow White is not that we want to erase POC or racism. She's a very beautiful actress. It's the fact that in the original german fairy tale Snow White is described as "white as snow, red as blood, and hair as black as ebony and was thus calles Snow white." (Translated from the Brothers Grimm Children fairy tales) That description doesn't even fit most germans today. If disney wanted to go for POC representation that made actual sense for the character, they could've had their pick from any other fairytale (like how they did with Arielley because skin tone doesn't matter in her context). But no, they had to choose one of the few ones where it's actually in not just the character description, but also the origin of the character! (Snow's mother sits near a window in winter, pricks her finger and looks at the drop of blood on the Snow and literally wishes for a child as white as snow, as red as blood and as black as the wood of the window). It's disrespectful to the source material, not just to the cartoon, and maybe even for the Latina they want to market as "white as snow", essentially erasing a beautiful part of her.
And it’s the way they could’ve casted an albino or a very pale Asian as well; being ‘white as snow’ is a physical descriptor that doesn’t limit where the character is from!
It's not about the race, white. It's about the skin color so pale that even a regular typical white person looks darker when placed next to them. And yes, the cartoon also didn't get this right. Doesn't mean the Live Action shouldn't have at least tried to look beyond their 'woke' colored glasses and tried for accuracy. They could've just as well cast a very pale asian actress. Rachel is a beautiful actress, but the fact that she tans already means she's probably got the wrong skin tone. People with skin so pale don't typically tan, they burn incredibly quickly.
@@ITSMETHESHEEP but I guess if you want to make the debate about race: no one would dare cast a caucasian woman for the role of Princess Tiana for a Princess and the Frog life action just because Tiana is depicted a pale black woman. That wouldn't fly with people. But sure, take the one Princess with skin so pale it's likened to snow from the kids with actually that same skin tone who always get very excited at the description. "She's like me!" And I'm sorry, but Rachel may be "75% white" as you've said, but that doesn't erase the fact that you can still see the difference in the tone of her skin even in winter.

I think you missed the mark on this one. While ppl have been less than accepting with other projects, that's not the issue with Snow White. This is an old German folktale that's very much a part of their culture, and taking it and rewriting it like this is as upsetting as it would be to take another culture's story and rewrite. One if the iconic parts of it is that her skin is white, hair is dark, and lips are red. In order to be able to call out racism and sexism and all other forms of bigotry, it's important to not apply that label every time someone disagrees with something (which is what seems to be Disney's go-to)

@@melanietabora14 Watch Disney’s Goddess of Spring from 1934 (it’s on UA-cam). people react as if the original snow white stories wasn't heavily modified by disney. her lips are said to be as red as the blood of her dead mother specifically. the king remarries, and in folklore it is implied the stepmom kills the king and is a full blown witch (not the old hag kind). she asks for the girl's lungs and liver to eat them in a ritual, because she's that hardcore. originally the prince doesn't even meet her or kiss her. he just sees her dead body, takes/steals her glass coffin from the dwarves to have her exposed in his castle because he doesn't think she's a real person since she's so beautiful and he can't bear to not look at her. on the road one of the 'pallbearers' drops the coffin and it dislodges the apple from her throad and she comes back to life and the prince is like wtf can i marry that? and he does. i don't think that's much better but it really highlights how girls at that time were just pawns in a social game, and only their beauty and innocence could save them (moral: marry young so your mom doesn't eat your organs) extra depressing lore: the dwarves are said to be inspired by the deformed and malnourished children copper miners of the time, and unnamed before Disney's version. that's so fucking merry a real poisoning of a young countess (literal child) that was in love with Philip II of Spain was said but not confirmed to be an inspiration to some parts of the tale. so yeah dead and deformed children victims of a royal proto-capitalist society as basis for folk tales, sign me tf up

This!!
Absolutely
It feels mad dismissive too, like there aren't people with drawfism that exists so we have to animate them??
yes!! there are many talented actors with dwarfism, but disney wants the money that big names will bring
I guess I’m not loud enough.''
Which then prompted Disney to change their mind and have him as the ONLY person with dwarfism out of all 7 dwarves! Which then got even more backlash, and now thanks to his insane take and Disney being too dumb to listen to it, they ended up with NO people with dwarfism and CGI instead! It's ridiculous.
Idk how they “consulted with people with dwarfism” and then decided to make all the dwarfs cgi instead of hiring real people as if they are some fantasy creatures that don’t exist irl.
this🥲
Astute commentary. Thank u.
It was Peter Dinklage who did this. Look up snow white Peter Dinklage. Many in the dwarfism community are rightfully pissed off at him.
The movie is going to be bad and it has nothing to do with Snow White being brown. It’s bad because Disney remakes are soulless
Thank you
the trailer is hideous. wth are the cgi dwarfs and tHE COSTUMING. Her dress looks like a wal mart costume.

The point of feminism is to have choices.
realest take i’ve seen honestly
Doesn’t make sense.
its not even that good of a role model
Hard agree!!! Although the original snow white is obviously dated it is still very dear to my heart, and there's nothing wrong with a girl who has dreams of true love etc.

"Skin as white as snow" probably meant "doesn't tan or get freckles."

Very pale skin is not the same as skin that is literally the color white. Same with lipstick, which again Snow White‘s lips are described as naturally the color of blood. Even if not scary, it would definitely look strange.
If you think she’s boring that’s your beer, however maybe don’t generalize for everyone. The whole point of the character is to be saintly and pure to a fault to act as a foil to the character of the queen. The story is about envy and good vs evil.

YES EXACTLY 😭 people also forget that the prince not being seen throughout the film can be seen as him symbolizing the reward for Snow White’s kindness, perseverance, and pure heart.
Well it didn't stop them with Beauty and the Beast, who had already two legendary adaptations (the original Disney and Cocteau's version).
Everyone took a few interviews from her and ran with it instead of just waiting for the movie to come out.

Right? Like truly there are so many cool stories from all around the world that Disney could be mining for future classics.
They have 0 idea how easy it would be to get back into slam dunk territory
-pick classic stories they haven’t already mined and gutted
-pick musicians and artists with unique visions
-either profit now or eat shit but wait 15 years for the kids who grew up with it to get weirdly obsessed with it like they did with stuff like Atlantis and Treasure Planet, and THEN profit
There are so many fairytales, legends and mythologies around the world, I just don’t understand why they can’t have balls and adapt something again
Right? They even did Tinker Bell dirty when the fairy universe already has black fairies. Even if it's a children's movie, that doesn't mean Disney gets a pass for performatively choosing POC actors. They literally can adapt POC fairytales instead.

Don't worry. Disney will add a hidden middle name that you have to understand by watching the sequel. Her actual full name is Snow Longer White.
@@drawingsticks5333 I love that video! Definitely took some of my points from it lol
The live action movie for The Jungle Book is amazing in my opinion. I read that they fused the Disney version and the og version. It’s really cool!

a lot of people were saying that Rachel wasn’t Latina enough to play Maria in West Side Story, now people are saying she’s too Latina to play Snow White. she literally cannot catch a break.
Also the fact that ppl ignore that we have iconic male characters who actually have relevant feminine strength that gets highlighted and shown, celebrated but no one would ever admit that those are actually feminine strength and features…
So it’s a bit difficult when feminine strength gets nothing, but disrespected and sidelined whilst also female characters are limited to being feminine and whenever feminine strength is there, it’s shown with dudes and it’s suddenly treated as an extension of masculinity, for some to not internalize this misogyny.
Denying 7 little people the chance to play the bestest dwarves of all time is the real crime. When I was a kid, they were always what made the movie.
Exactly-- that hair looks like something I'd get at Spirit Halloween!!
The dress is so ugly it's not even funny. it looks like a polly pocket dress down to the awkward stiff fit
I didn’t even think about this, but you’re so right
I did some research and realized Hollywood does CGI “fix” most of the costumes we see on screen.
Peter has had to play a bunch of dwarf and elf characters forever because Hollywood hardly ever consider little people for any other roles, and re-engaging with a movie where dwarfism is once again seen as just a whimsical little tidbit sets back conversations revolving around dwarfism in media.
well now they really do look like fantastical creatures, created by CGI just like dragons 👏👏
exactly! i think a lot of people are just Not getting his comment, and are trying to pin the blame on him for disneys awful choice. his point is that he doesnt want them to be fantasy creatures, he wants the dwarves to be treated and portrayed like real people, with character that goes beyond one note traits. he was frustrated that disney would go for making things progressive and make that a point, while also still treating little people like fantasy creatures. in the original film, theyre not much different than the talking animals other princesses get, of course he would want more for the characters! but people saw that and just wanted to blame a man who doesnt want the only roles for little people to be ones that strip them of being human
Either way with or without intention, Hollywood weaponized what he said and generalized it to a degree that he is oneof the few dwarves still.abl to get work.....what you're saying sure wasn't elaborated on
Thank you, I was wondering what that comment was referring to and this explains it perfectly.

I think a Snow White stage show would be pretty cool. It’ll save us from the weird CGI at least.
they would just make it the awkward 3d animation they've been doing lately. id rather see it in 2d, but that's near impossible. if they were having a better approach on their recent animated features i think this would be ok, remaking the animations as animation, but as it is now and how they're already thinking about how they do their animated films... it would be trash just like the live actions, if not even worse. animation is a work of so much love, it is so so easy to notice if its being made halfheartedly; if it isn't genuine, the reception would be somehow even worse than the live actions. also, the animated features already exist. i do think that remaking them animated would be a shot to disney's own foot.
Someone way back in the 2010s made a genie wish that Disney would stop releasing only sequels and that shit backfired hard.

THISSS

Same. As a POC, I see it as "LOOK LOOK. BUY OUR STUFF. WE CARE ABOUT POC!!!"
And the thing is, Disney already has a Latina princess, Elena of Avalor.

I agree with you wholeheartedly
I believe that a women can be great while still being in love with a man or having a side male character. It's not necessary that she has throw away all the aspects that make snow white, the snow white we love.
There's no way this many people actually care about Snow White, I refuse to believe it.
Right??? I'm not saying it shouldn't be respected, Mulan, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid (didn't like the racism there but whatever) and Beauty and Beast?
Snow White looks young and the prince looks older it’s just Yucky

There is a problem with her being brown but not for the reason most people are saying.

She is white tho like
It's a French and German fairytale predating the 17th century, how likely do you think snow white is an east asian person in that context and why should disney be the ones deciding it

Can Disney please just make movies based off of non-European fairy tales instead of race-changing the old ones? Like there are so many cool African and Asian legends and folklore that they could use, instead of casting a brown person as a character who's name is literally a description of how pale she is. If they were genuine about being diverse, empowering and inclusive, they would do things differently. But they aren't genuine, they just want money.
Rachel is 75% polish dude
@monbub
If you seriously think that Rachel Ziegler has the same skin color as Snow white, then you must be blind.
I partly agree, but as a german, I disagree with my culture being taken and raceswapped.
They should make a movie called snow black or snow brown & then what. But they think only Caucasian people have pale skin. They would've been mad if it were an albino poc so let em stay mad.
@@tj6800ironically the actress is a pale poc. She literally half polish & they still have a problem lol
They did her DIRTY with that hairdo, poor girl.
I just don't understand why they couldn't just put red lipstick on her for them ruby red lips. Plus her hair looks for brown in the movie when they could just give her a black wig lmao
Right? From what we've seen, they didn't really try to make her look like Snow White? Like, red lipstick and black hair dye isn't that hard to do.
I don't trust Disney with wigs so I don't mind the brown hair
D’Angelo this is the first time I realized Dave is actually the head statue behind you & not the bunny boy stuffed animal I truly don’t pay enough attention fml
lmao relatable
ur telling me disney couldn’t find seven actors with dwarfism in the entirety of the united states😭 like come on. there are some charters that are just written to look a certain way, and the dwarfs are written to be short. like that’s a substantial part of the plot😭 and the fact they just made them CGI instead. that just makes it seem like they think they’re a fantasy creature that doesn’t exist. and it’s LIVE ACTION. why are we using animation for people😭
Snow White suppose to be White as Snow... the using harassment as an excuse doesn't seem to make any sense.
I’m confused on what you’re trying to say here.
@@tropicalcoast02 "lips red as the rose, hair black as ebony, and skin white as snow" Is the description of her from the fairytale. Snow White, her name, is a reference to her skin color.
In defense of the mirror, the whole point is that while the Queen is very much a baddie, so is Snow White, and she's also beautiful on the inside, and therefore more beautiful than the Queen. What was the mirror supposed to do, lie?
I've heard in some versions that the mirror is prohibited from lying!!!
Stop making up your own story, the story very clearly implies that it’s the outer beauty that’s being spoken of
@@joshuaperry2426 and inner beauty its both that's why snow white is the fairest.
@@joshuaperry2426 You can’t be serious.
Thank you! I hate that people keep on calling them the original Disney made nothing for their movies they took from the public domain
But how will the bigots whine about movies being wOkE?

"She's like me!"
And I'm sorry, but Rachel may be "75% white" as you've said, but that doesn't erase the fact that you can still see the difference in the tone of her skin even in winter.
@Femtoisbackandbetter Yes... the words "as well" imply that.

I’m hating on this movie for it being another live action one that looks super ugly 😭 and btw first full length animated movie they had a hard time drawing the prince. So they met at the beginning and then at the end for the kiss.
@@melanietabora14 Watch Disney’s Goddess of Spring from 1934 (it’s on UA-cam). It’s a loose retelling of the Persephone myth, and Persephone was kinda the proto Snow White so that Disney’s team could practice animating people who look and move like irl people, but Persephone moves like she doesn’t have bones. Thank god they fixed that because Snow being animated like a rubber hose character sounds nightmarish. At least Zegler and Caselotti have bones and don’t move like Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse.
My main problem is how she kept talking about how this version of snow white is different because she isn't saved by a prince while simultaneously giving the prince more attention than he received in the original story

her lips are said to be as red as the blood of her dead mother specifically. the king remarries, and in folklore it is implied the stepmom kills the king and is a full blown witch (not the old hag kind). she asks for the girl's lungs and liver to eat them in a ritual, because she's that hardcore.
originally the prince doesn't even meet her or kiss her. he just sees her dead body, takes/steals her glass coffin from the dwarves to have her exposed in his castle because he doesn't think she's a real person since she's so beautiful and he can't bear to not look at her. on the road one of the 'pallbearers' drops the coffin and it dislodges the apple from her throad and she comes back to life and the prince is like wtf can i marry that? and he does. i don't think that's much better but it really highlights how girls at that time were just pawns in a social game, and only their beauty and innocence could save them (moral: marry young so your mom doesn't eat your organs)
extra depressing lore: the dwarves are said to be inspired by the deformed and malnourished children copper miners of the time, and unnamed before Disney's version. that's so fucking merry
a real poisoning of a young countess (literal child) that was in love with Philip II of Spain was said but not confirmed to be an inspiration to some parts of the tale.
