Being from Colombia, I'm a huge fan of Juan Pablo Montoya, even though he retired from F1 in the 2006 season. And while F1 Career Challenge wasn't my favorite F1 game, it was still a source of pride and joy for me that he was featured in the cover. Those were good times indeed!
Montoya was a great F1 driver. His style is similar to Senna. Unfortunately, the backstage, money and political games in F1 did not allow it to continue. In F1, a driver has to cringe at the above if he wants to continue his career. Montoya was not a cringe.
Montoya was the most talented driver of that era when it comes to raw speed over the limit, finding alternative lines, car control and he's to me a complete idol, saying this as italian surrounded by biased Ferrari fan. I've followed him since his rookie season in f3000 and of course I bought F1 Challenge at the time. I left the sport after his departure. That was a trauma and total emblem of the bad route F1 was taking. Juancho had his flaws like all of us (he sometimes lacked consistency and commitment, ending to be a bit too erratic and fall in silly mistakes), but definitely for the type of total talent he was and still is (IMSA champion, another great race at Indy even this year) he was quite sabotaged by politics and overall environment of f1.
My first f1 was f1 2006. That was the best F1 i ever played. Juan pablo montoya and kimi mercedes , felipe massa and M. Schumacher in ferrari; Alonso and Fisichella in renault , ralph Schumacher toyota panasonic and nico roseberg and mark webber in williams ; couthard in red bull and others. Old time.
Honestly F1 Challenge 99-02 deserves its own video review because: -The physics were the best at the time,it was the predecessor of rFactor. -4 full F1 seasons, each season had its own details with clear changes on cars and tracks. -Still the best A.I in terms of wheel to wheel racing,i'm yet to see an A.I that is bold enough to overtake you on the outside of turn 1 in Interlagos. -Realistic mechanical failures(High brake pressure would elevate temps, increasing the chances of brake failure, engines would overheat, gearbox could stall). -Some impressive attention to detail(There is a MASSIVE driving feel difference between the understeery 2001 BMW Williams and the more precise 2000 McLaren Mercedes for example, not to mention the difference between backmarkers and top tier.) -Realistic Telemtry. People often put F1 Challenge 99-02 among those crappy PS2 EA Sports games but its not fair at all,F1C is on its own league,it is a proper simulator in my opinion.
My first F1 game was "Nigel Mansell's Grand Prix" on the ZX Spectrum. I played the older F1 games to death in my PS1 years around '96 - '98. But honestly once the Gran Turismo series started they set a bar so high with physics and car/track variety, it was hard for me to get into any other racing games until years later in the era of modern sims like AC and AMs. I do now play and love the F1 games though. Codemasters have been doing an amazing job with the franchise over the last few years.
Grand Prix Challenge was fantastici think its the second best F1 game in 128 bits, just followed by F-one 2006 which was phenomenal considering that Ps2 was already 6 years old by then
I remember how I enjoyed playing tthe career in F1 05, the fact that you could start as a test driver and had to do some results to gain a seat for the race was something I enjoyed a lot
F1 2001 by Studio Liverpool was my very first F1 game :) I remember I used to play this in my dad's classroom when he was teaching and I played it on a projector screen
My first taste of F1 was F1 2005 on PS2. Kickstarted my passion for sim racing. Proud to still be doing it today. Have had some excursions in some really fast real cars since then as well.
Some minor corrections: - F1 Ch 99-02 was called F1 Career Challange on PS2, and the physics were slightly different compared to the pc version - F1 05 was not the first F1 game on ps2 to feature classic cars. F1 04 had Jordan 191 and Williams FW14B. -One of the main improvement in F1 06 was the steering wheel animation on the d-pad, which finally wasn't just like the driver had an hiccup at every turn as in F105
F1 2006 brings a lot of my childhood memory, it's my first F1 game ever to play, also the first time i try to play with the steering wheel, and one of the reason i'm start to be the fan of Fernando Alonso because i like to use his blue Renault car.
i have played the 2004 and 2005 games so much that i remeber everything in them i love them so much this game together with the gt4 and the NFSU/2 and the wrc rally evolution were my chilhood racing games damn i miss my ps2 so much

@@visibletoallusersonyoutube5928 I already tried LFS, it's a good sim-game for low specs PCs, but if you don't have a wheel or a controller (like me xd), it's a little bit hard to play it with keyboard due to its slow direction and lack of auto counter-steering in most of cases (tells you someone who played a lot of non-arcade racing games with keyboard). Sony missed out on a tonne of money when they didn't make an F1 game during the 'Hamilton-mania' years in 2007/2008. The rise of Hamilton was such a big story especially in the UK that I'm sure they would've had record sales off the back of that hype. Thankfully F1 Championship Edition on the PS3 was a brilliant game that helped to bridge the gap until F1 2010 which was the first F1 game on the main consoles of the time.
Missing the F1 Championship Season 2000 & Grand Prix Challenge as some have mentioned. But also Ubisoft's F1 Racing Championship based on 1999 season. Weird handling, but an interesting game. I got lucky with GP Challenge, as my copy was bought whilst on a school trip to Germany. That version featured the new Hockenheim, whilst other versions featured the old one
