I also own one Chevy volt 2-nd generation and totally agree with what was stated in this video, including with the idea that GM should not have discontinued this model and should have develop an SUV. It's a great car, just little bit small
I’m looking at buying a 2018 Volt Premier tomorrow. Your video gave me an idea of what to expect. I’m really looking forward to it! Thanks for the review.
I love my 2018 Volt in Canada and agree. If GM made a plug-in SUV with more electric range they would sell. Mine just got the 'shift to park' error code, so off to the dealer for warranty repair.
Have the same exact year make and model Volt, down to the summit white paint. Few points 1. The rotors and calipers are a major GM parts defect, made worse by the fact that they are not used as often as normal brakes. This is even worse in areas that salt the roads in winter. I had to replace my GM pads, calipers and rotors after only 60K miles. Now I make it a habit every few months to engage the brakes heavily stopping from 45 MPH to 0 while in Neutral. If you are in D, the regen braking will take over for the first 30% of braking effort. Have no longer had the caliper sticking issue. 2. The Shift to Park is a common bug on several GM vehicles actually. However this should be completely covered by the Voltec Warranty. Had it on mine, covered by GM and even gave me a loaner while it was being fixed. 3. Apple Carplay is finicky but works best when using the top USB port and a genuine Apple USB 3.1 Gen 2 cable. Make sure you update your OS as carplay is a function of the Apple OS itself, not an app. 4. If you have not changed the transmission fluid yet, I would highly recommend you do so. Its extremely easy if you do the 'replace the amount you drained method'. Hardest part will be removing the underbody covering.
2018 owner. Only issue i had was shift to park and was fixed under warranty. The only other issue, and its minor, is quite often my music or podcast wont play via the android auto. As soon as i turn the car off it starts to play and continues to work when i turn it on. This happens around 1 out of every 10 starts. Anyone else have this issue?
The general owners consensus is try not to plug in the phone before starting up the car, instead, start the car, let the infotainment boot up 10 seconds before plugging phone in. I have discovered I run into way less CarPlay issues this way. YMMV.
@@LifeInCanada it is interesting as they are developing the city turn by turn navigation now (openpilot navigation), from what I've seen it's possible the 2nd gen volts among others will have similar to Tesla's F.S.D.
Ditto - I have a 2018 and would say almost word for word the same review - including the brakes. I would buy again - except GM cancelled it ???? A shame because a plug in hybrid it is such a good way to go electric.
That Shift to Park issue is a known problem and GM should be able to replace the module for you as it is covered due to it being a known service issue.
I have a 2017 I brought it in to the dealer complaining the car was surging. It had 60,000 miles on it at that time. They told me everything is normal but I did notice on the receipt they reprogrammed the BECM . Now it has 111,000 on it and the BECM went bad. I called the dealership to ask about the special program, warrantee it till 15 years and 150,000 miles they said they don’t know anything about that. I called three dealers . Now I have a car that will not move.
hi, can you tell me how many kwatts used one charge in winter? I have 1gen volt 2014 first when bought at 112k km uses 10.3kw and now 195k km uses only 9.5 kw
I have 2017 volt. EGR valve has to be replaced. Dealer gave me price $3800 plus labor. Total $5500. My volt has only 72Km. Any idea how to fix it cheaper??? Pls let me know if you had similar experience
I bought a remanufactured one on ebay. Installed in 15 minutes and car is back to normal no issues since. You can also try cleaning out yours. There is a video on UA-cam of someone cleaning their egr valve by putting it in purple power degreaser or something like that and then reinstalling it fixed his problem. The one I bought on ebay was about $400-500 and came with the gasket. I also bought another one off of a used one from a junk yard but funny enough when I got home the one I had ordered had arrived so I have it as a back up just in case.
Same here, just got my gen2 back from Chevy after 6 weeks. 82k miles the EBCM codes came up. My car was unreliable to start for a couple days before I took it in and borrowed a loaner from GM. I paid exactly 0$ though and I am so happy to be back in my Volt.

Take it in if it doesn't go into park. That's very dangerous if the car rolls away when you're not in it. Probably needs lubrication. I remember Ford shut down a dealership because I had to take a car in twice for that. I didn't know about the parking brake at the time.
This isn't a mechanical issue, it is partial hardware/software issue. There's no danger of rolling away. The pain is the car won't shut off because it doesn't think it's in P.
It's really cool that you shared this, in this honest, friendly manner! This is really helping me!
Than you! Glad it was helpful!

Thank you. It seems that GM may bring the plug-in hybrids back. I hope they recognize their mistake.
@LifeInCanada Queen Mary announced that they will be bringing the Equinox PHEV. Not sure for when? Hopefully 2026.

Interesting - what about transmissions oil? Egr cooler? Becm issue? 12V battery? Spark plugs?

Exactly the type of review I was looking for. Too many sponsored/affiliate videos on youtube. Have you considered Comma 3 auto-pilot?
Thanks for your feedback. Glad you liked it. No I haven't consider the autopilot. Is it something worth looking into?

Thanks for the info. Will check with the dealer. Did they have a recall for it?
@@LifeInCanada it was a service bulletin, not quite a recall but it works that way

Mine usually manages 41-42 miles in 10.3 kwh. ( 2015) I managed to get 45 miles, but most of the trip was downhill at 40 mph.

Cool!
What about BECM module. It is a major problem of most V2 cars.
ive had mine replaced right about 80K , had to wait, but it gave check engine light without any drive complaints. took a bit to get a replacement
