Some really great bag builder games on this list
Great list, thank you!
No Life of the Amazonia?
shea did a runthrough for it on the channel when it was crowdfunding, and i was really impressed by it, but unfortunately the publisher never sent a final review copy, so i can't really rate it since i've never played it myself. between you and me, i think it had a genuine shot at making my shortlist based on what i saw in shea's runthrough, but i couldn't say for sure without trying it first hand :(
To be clear, the Kickstarter version of Meeples & Monsters has the screen printed meeples, but I think the retail version only has plain meeples. It is a pretty fun game, though, and yes, some of the worker placement is putting the meeples at the walls of the city to "combat" the monsters there, but it's just a matter of comparing their total strength to the monster's.
Also, I love bag builders, but I fully agree with the upgrade comment that bag building really needs some nice tokens. I absolutely hate cardboard tokens for bag builders. I played Quacks one time (a friend's copy) with the default cardboard before I ever knew that there were upgraded tokens for it, and about 2 minutes in, I said, "they really need to make some better tokens for this game." Afterwards, I looked it up (because I did actually like the game) and found out that they did have better tokens available. I never got the game, though, because I got Wonderland's War, and that game fully replaces Quacks for me, so I no longer feel the need to own it.
is Coffee ☕️ roaster bag builder? 😮 interesting topic🎉 Bag drawing saves table space and more travel friendly, and avoid the hassle of deck shuffling (I have a manual shuffler, what a pain)
yup, coffee roaster was talked about in the extended episode :)
for me coffee roasters and warp's edge are best solo games that happen to be bag builders
yup coffee roasters got discussed in the extended episode :)
Here are all my little stories!
Zvocharnir, Guardian of the Deep, Bridgemaster of the Great Chasm.
Out of the three sub races of dwarves, the Zvorda are well known to be enigmas among their own people. They are so few and far between that they stand out in whatever mountain cities they choose to make their homes. Yet, even still, Zvocharnir stands alone.
While most dwarves in their youth make the long journey up the stairs from where the Norglavanja (the fair ones) dwell, are greeted by the holy thul, and adopted into a bloodline, Zvocharnir stopped his journey short, and took up residence in a small shack just past the final bridge of the journey. He has never spoken his birthmother's true name, and therefore has never been recognized as part of a bloodline. Instead, he remains as the last guardian of the deep, forever both a fierce protector of the way below to the Norglavanja's hold and a gentle shepard to the young ones that make the great climb up to dwarven society. At a hulking 6.5 feet tall, the largest Zvorda on record, often rumoured to be more troll than dwarf, Zvocharnir has only left his post three times, when self-proclaimed great nations have tried to take Muspelheim and its precious resources for themselves. Suffice to say, not a single being has ever managed to set one foot past him if he did not wish for them to do so.
Brandur Noxithrall.
Brandur was stolen from his parents by sea wolves at an early age and sold into the service of a prominent Storm-Hansa. As with all the thralls under this particular merchant's employ, Brandur was worked tirelessly, forced to scale the many mountain ranges of the stormlands, harvesting dangerous and potent herbs.
Throughout the years, Brandur gained the trust of his master and watched his work meticulously. When the Storm-Hansa and his family became mysteriously ill, Brandur faithfully stepped forward, tending to them diligently, easing their woes and administering their medicines. Unfortunately the illness proved to be too much for the family, and they perished, leaving Brandur to seize the Storm-Hansa's business and all his holdings. He immediately freed all of his master's former slaves and adopted a surname of his own choosing, Noxithrall, perhaps as an homage to his past, or perhaps as a defiant warning for all those who would attempt to enslave man for their own personal gain. He has since enjoyed a thriving business, as any and all competitors are often too busy fighting bouts of sickness to provide much competition.
Ulfvar Grimspear.
A legend in his own right, Ulfvar became the head of clan Grimspear while defending his village from a band of rogue Korpikalli. It is said he infused the trees with his righteous anger, and they in turn lent him the use of their branches to finish his fight. He now owns a tavern south of the Tinder River outside the Copperwoods, where any weary traveller can seek refuge for the evening and perhaps hear a tale or two. It is said he is one of the only non-elves to be allowed passage through the woods and is often now used as a mediator between the Korpikalli and the Wildbrons, who inhabit the three villages north of the Rim Rapids.
Vaunea Axeslay.
Vaunea is the Dark Mother of her Wildling tribe, one tribe amongst the many of the Amur clan. An accomplished healer, Vaunea's beauty and skill are only matched by her cruelty. In fact, she would be a more likely fit for the cannibals of the Arks rather than the Amur, and perhaps it is this zealous devotion to devouring power from her victims that has cemented her status as one of the most respected Tadsijs in her tribe's history.
Many travellers who have been unable to pay the steep price of Vaunea's healing skills have found themselves the victims of her two twin hatchets and added to her supply of "soul enhancers". All this is done for the good of her tribe (and for future paying customers), and it is with great respect for dead that she weaves each victim's index finger bone into one of her many braids. To enter her tent is to enter a nightmare, of souls trapped in cages, maimed, all waiting to be devoured; but for the right price there is no ailment or injury she cannot treat. She is a conduit of death and life and everything in between. It is up to you to decide if the reward is worth the cost.
Ylvsinathial Veistaja.
A proud warrior during the Endless Storm, Ylvsinathial spoke to the trees and the air and the stones and all things, and they in turn spoke back. It was Ylvsinathial who first created the ironwood, and shaped it into the arrows and bows that would strike down wyrm upon wyrm until there were none left to ravage the land.
After the Vaniir departed, Ylvsinathial found himself gazing upon the stars in search of meaning, as with many of the illmalajni, but it wasn't until the age of man that Ylvsinathial found clarity. He was never as troubled as his Ijosalfr brothers and sisters, nor as angry and defiant as the Korpikalli. Ylvsinathial found himself longing to create works that would honour what the Vaniir had left behind and build a way towards an age of deeper harmony with nature. It was through the process of carving yew, ash, black locust and various woods, infusing them with the power of the stones, and creating tools and weapons that would only strike as true as the heart of the wielder, that Ylvsinathial found a peace that has eluded most of his kind. He lives a modest life, weaving his soul into the fibres of every work, happy to share his craft with those who reject evil and strive to shape Trudvang into the world the Vaniir once loved. Perhaps then, they might return.
(and this was Zach's one for me, he also entered in the contest and I love it) - Jvris herjar. The ballads singer. As a youth Jvris knew no fear and his parents scorned him. The townsfolk mocked him and his peers turned him aside. for a boy that did not know fear could not learn diligence or shame or duty. What good was such a dreaming careless boy when the winter wolves came howling and hungry snow piled high. So it was that his parents sent Jvris out on his own to learn him what fear was. He learned many things for the breadth of the world he traveled and all the songs and tales he heard he remembered. But he knew nothing of fear even then. He wanders still, spinning tales and singing songs; hopeing that somewhere someone would teach him to shiver, that something might introduce him to dread, that he would come to know fear.
Resurgence is probably #1 for me.
it's on my my full top 10 list in the extended episode
I woukd put Isofarian Guard on the list. But might be too campaign oriented for some.
we tried a prototype of it and it really wasn't for us, but glad you're enjoying it! :)
You mention that this is a trilogy, can you provide links to the previous 2 episodes? I can't find them.
part 1: ua-cam.com/video/_40k6NhYZV0/v-deo.html (pure deckbuilders)
part 2: ua-cam.com/video/YR63r8rth5A/v-deo.html (deckbuilders with a board)
Is Clank! a bag-builder too? And if it isn't, why not?
you know what... you're RIGHT! i think one could make an argument that it is a bag builder, where the game is building and using it's own bag against us. i like it, nice thinking! :)
Scholars of the south Tigris? Hegemony too.
tigris definitely, though i wouldn't put it on my list because in the end the game didn't work for me and jen.
hegemony is interesting suggestion. technically i guess it fits even if it's very unconventional, but sure, why not! :)
What if two people both put the same game as their #1s (coincidentally)?
pistols at dawn! (i'm not sure if its ever happened in the 3 years we've done the show)
I'm disappointed that no-one pointed out that Joan of Arc was made/Maid of Orleans.
i've played it but didn't put it on my list because it's a bit too simple for our tastes. reallly needs an expansion to bump up the complexity a bit. i talked about it a bit more here: ua-cam.com/video/FeWiFwvC_EI/v-deo.html :)
For me it's Hyperborea. That game gets no respect!
i'm aware of it, but never played it. i've heard good things over the years though
No Altiplano!?
it has a VERY important standing in the extended show (links in the shownotes) where i did my full top10 :)
Top 10 Bag Builder without Hyperborea is not a Top 10
Altiplano is a deck builder not a bag builder
are you thinking of a different game? altiplano is the very defintion of a bag builder :)
