Blinova played Marshall's defense to the queen's gambit, a dubious idea of Frank Marshall. She played it rather well though, and A. Yunker ended up with a bad endgame. A. Yunker is extremely gifted in any case. I expect her to become at least an international master.
@pukulu Alisa Yunker is extremely gifted indeed but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Every Grandmaster has stories about much more talented players than they were at the same age in their youth who never got close to Grandmaster or International Master. Let's see how strong young Ms. Yunker is when she turns 15 or 16. She is massively talented without question. But will she remain as dedicated to her chess development or lose some of her interest in chess as she becomes more interested in boys, fashion, and whatever else 16 year-old girls tend to be interested in? I hope she makes Grandmaster and she very well may have the talent to reach that level. But it's just too soon to tell how far she will progress in chess because no amount of talent alone is enough to reach IM or GM. Tremendous talent is certainly needed to reach those levels but so is a huge amount of diligent productive hard work.

@@Steveross2851 yes of course. I've been around tournament chess players a long time, my first major tournament being the US Open in Pasadena in 1983. I've been around chess students a long time too, having given chess lessons since 1995. The hard working students who love chess often pass up those with more talent but less commitment.

Great move!!. Blinova thought that Yunker was going to promote a queen and she would win on the next move . Surprise! Yunker promotes to knight and check!
Not that much. The knight would have been lost immediatedly after moving King to f6, after which moving the knight losses it and moving the king is checkmate rightaway. Blinova missed that chance to win and moved the King tho h6.

Why Yunker didn't activate the queen?
Because the black King is in opposition to the white King, the white King cannot enter the 7th row. If white would turn her pawn into a queen, black could set mate on the next move, with Rook on A8. The transformation of the pawn into a knight immediately attacks the black King, and black is forced to move with the king instead of moving the rook.

I assume it was a draw? -- why did the end game go on so long? -- it's pointless for a king to chase a knight -- and is it even possible to get checkmate with only a king and a rook? -- after a quick look, it is, but it's rather difficult, and a clever player (like Alice) might be able to greatly prolong it -- but she also had a knight to harass the king and rook, so that makes it even more difficult, probably unlikely
Alice is a very good player.
That 1800 has THE WORST endgame technique, this is one of the easiest positions to win with RvN. I was begging that she'd just cut the damn knight off and trap it, but she kept trying to give mate for some reason
