Atwell Suites Miami Brickell, an IHG hotel. One King bed studio with balcony.
145 SW 11th St Building 2, Miami, Florida, 33130, United States
IHG opened its first Atwell Suites property three weeks ago in the trendy Brickell area in downtown Miami. IHG’s newest brand is optimized for longer stays and currently has 21 properties in the pipeline including Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Austin, TX with the next location at Denver Airport scheduled to open in June. Atwell is a great addition to the IHG family and will definitely attract younger guests with a fresh modern design. What a nice change from the Holiday Inn and Candlewood select service hotels you will find around the globe, many of which are in need of renovations.
    THE ROOM
The room itself was great with a functional and spacious layout. The balcony with great views however did not have any chairs or furniture. Storage in the room was limited with only the open closet and no drawers for a longer stay to put items away. Zenology brand soap, shampoo and lotion were provided in refillable bottles. Housekeeping was great and I never once had to ask for my room to be cleaned yet it was cleaned every day. Even one day when I didn’t leave and take off the Do Not Disturb until after 5pm it was still serviced when I came back later in the evening.
For a new hotel the Wifi was much slower than expected at less than 10Mbps up and down. This makes it impossible to stream anything in 4K or for anyone who needs to upload large files or video. Even trying to stream in HD at times was lagging and web browsing can be sluggish at times.
There is a small fridge along with a Keurig coffee machine and a steamer for your clothes instead of the typical iron you might find in other hotels. I found the work and desk area layout with the higher chair quite functional for working and the couch was great for just relaxing and watching TV.
    BREAKFAST AND LOUNGE
The breakfast area, bar and lounge located on the top 24th floor all share the same space and are one of the highlights of the hotel. There are balconies on multiple sides with different views from the lounge and even a conference room that can be booked. Wireless chargers and outlets are provided throughout the lounge. Unfortunately I found that the lounge was closed several days during the day and not open again until the evening or next morning. It’s a really nice space and it’s a shame it wasn’t open all day for guests.
Breakfast hours are 6:30am to 10:30am during the week and 7:00am to 11:00am on the weekends. There was a fairly decent selection available including breakfast sandwiches, omelets, greek yogurt, overnight oats, oatmeal, cereal, bagels, toast and donuts. Currently all of the breakfast protein options include cheese or milk and it would be nice to have some options without that such as hard boiled or scrambled eggs or maybe even bacon or sausage for more variety.
Coffee (including espresso drinks from a machine) and tea are available along with Orange Juice (a juice machine was in the process of being installed). One of the highlights was the sparkling water machine with a selection of flavors you could add.
Breakfast was great the first few weekdays however it turned into a disaster on the weekend where they were understaffed and completely ran out of everything. Most of the time I was there both coffee machines were out of service and that meant having to go down to the first floor to get coffee from the restaurant or back to your room. The rest of my stay there were some items missing every day from breakfast.
Breakfast in the hotel restaurant on the first floor was definitely an improvement over my experience with the continental breakfast in the lounge. I tried the steak and eggs and also the Eggs Benedict with salmon and they were very good although a bit pricey when you factor in the built in 18% service charge and tip on top of the menu prices.

    CONCLUSION
Overall the service was good at the hotel and staff were friendly and even remembered my name after a few days. Some training was still in progress and I’m sure over time things will get even better.
Some minor construction is still ongoing in some parts of the lobby with the removal of a door between the Indigo and Atwell check in desks along with some new signage being installed. There was one point where they were down to one elevator but I never really had to wait for one. The key card system in the elevator was another story as you have to hold your key card at least 5 seconds before it lets you select any floor. This caused a lot of confusion for guests who often found themselves going all the way to the top floor and back down again.
Overall I was impressed and would definitely consider staying with the Atwell brand in the future.
