The STAIRS Are Almost DONE / Off Grid LOG CABIN Building (S3 Ep19)

  • After 3 years I finally have the stairs in my log cabin to go from the first to the second floor and I don't need the ladder anymore. After the fall I took I really could wait to finish the stairs. It took me a lot of work and many tries to fit perfectly the beams on which the stairs are mounted. I also had to lower the landing of the stairs otherwise I would always hit my head against the second floor joist. At first I though to just bend every time to avoid hitting it, but then a friend came by and told me to lower it right aways to not regret in later and he also came to help me do it. The purpose of that middle platform is to reduce the steepness of the stairs. For sure it was one of the more challenging but very rewarding builds in the end.
    Thank you for watching!

You went from dragging the timbers to carrying them, and altho some material got removed, your body soon remembered its strength. I've always hated cutting stairs, my hats off too you for figuring it out. I guess the #1 thing most Americans forget to do is remove all the distractions so we can think more clearly. Ya know, someday long after we're dead and gone, someone will be asked who built this beautiful home and a descendant of yours will respond with a great amount of pride My granddaddy built it with his own two hands and a few tools.

I have been watching since he cut the first tree. He shows when he makes a correction or a mistake, and that is probably why I enjoy watching this so much. I always do it right, because I always do it twice...
He always overcomes any problem and his hard work always pays off.
Also its fun to see his family and friends helping out, just a great channel. THANK YOU!

Your home is a thing of beauty Nic, I’ve watched from day one as you fell, cleaned and cut your logs. It’s been a journey. Your sheer craftsmanship and attention to detail has your name mentioned in many of the other videos I follow, you are much admired, for good reason. Your staircase is beautiful , to you and your family, all good wishes from Scotland, take care and stay safe 🌷😊👍

really? the boy is too young to work machines or do lifting and serious work, the girl and woman are ... well yeah, they can do small parts. To me it is more of a good example of a healthy way they seperate work: the man does the craftman, carpentry etc work and she supports the best she can.
Dont kid yourself, there wont be a woman out there able to do this sort of work. The most you will find is women building little garden houses and calling them log cabinets or even houses. A woman can create life, but we sustain it thru these impressive builds, like houses etc. sort of like> men make it so you survive and a womans touch is the comfort and synergy to the perfect life.

You are unorthodox in the way you go about things and the tools you choose. The sweatshirt is giving you your power back. be careful with the power and always protect your back. I believe that you got so strong with the build that you injured your back and it's been a long time since you've done this kind of lifting because of it, and I could see that you were in protection mode in some of the lifts with the bigger log, I also saw you were trying to be as careful as you could and working around the injury. I know because I've been there, I'm sure you were feeling it. You're like I used to be, too strong for your own frame. I'm 60 now and doing a lot of physical therapy and swimming to wear in the rough spots. I'll get off my soap box now, but I'm glad the sweatshirt is back! You've done so much, I'm so proud of you! Sincerely, Todd

I know when you are doing the hairiest and most dangerous parts of the builds you like to work alone so no one else gets hurt, like when you put up all the A frames, the most dangerous part of the build. I know how careful and methodical you are, please be extra careful and be safe always. Todd

The staircase is gorgeous but want thing I had observed... is that you need at least 10 inches of well seen... so you can get a safe step up and down
this is very important, specially when you have Kids in the house.

I've been building a classic Honda 350 road racer from the ground up complete. Engine, frame, racing alloy rims, race brakes and drum mod's, fiberglass fairing, tank and seat, race rubber and so much more with the same kind of attention to detail, paint, tires and so on. I admire your attention to detail and finish, keeps me going. I've been at this build for 5 years on and off and since I'm in a wheelchair, welding and cutting and fitting, painting has been a challenge but very satisfying to say the least. All hand done and painted by me here in my little shop and now in my bedroom ( since I'm in a wheelchair ) working on it for a few days, taking time to think out what's next and how am going to make it is fun and rewarding, thanks for your input in my project from watching you gives me energy to finish the project, very close indeed.

As if I wasn’t impressed already by how tightly your walls fit, you create this work of art of a staircase and landing. So beautiful using the tree base. I can hardly wait to see what’s next!

you know it has been a long day when ... a log you have probably man handled a dozen times already seems twice as heavy as it was at the start of the day and there is only half as much log to deal with ...
    .
the other joy of a log cabin no shortage of burnable bits to keep warm and cook on lol
    .
the only other way you might have gotten the stair logs even close would have been with a cardboard template ... but that would only have gotten you to the final lift and trim maybe a little tweaking as well ...
    .
seeing your lil one standing on the stair brought back MANY old memories ... I can see me doing that with my dad on various building projects ...
    .
those stair treads may have been a LOT of fiddly work but well worth the effort . they turned out excellent ...
    .
it is so nice seeing a person strive to get it just right and not settle for it will do ..

It's my dream to do something like this. As a poor kid from a poor urban area, this is my goal. Maybe not my career goal, but definitely my life goal! Hope you feel proud man, it's amazing.

Only found your site towards end of season 2, so watched the years view. My goodness I agree that you are a true craftsman. Remind me so much of my grandfather. He was always meticulous in everything he did and he mastered so many skills, of which he passed onto my brothers. Wish I’d taken more notice now, however I am a good painter and furniture restorer. Wonderful to see your children engaged in the build too.
