Promotional video of Napoleon XIV performing They're Coming To Take Me Away in 1966. A novelty record written and performed by Jerry Samuels (billed as Napoleon XIV), and released on Warner Bros. Records. The song became an instant success in the United States, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 in the UK.
RIP Napoleon XlV (Jerry Samuels), died March 10 2023 from Parkinson’s disease. He was 84.
That's sad. Rest In Peace Jerry 🕊
😢
Today (1/17/2024) is the first time I'm hearing of Mr. Samuels' passing. OMG. Thank you for providing us with all the laughs Napoleon XIV!!
rip
They came and took him away
My mom had a breakdown when I was in my tweens. My sis and I used dark humor to cope for years. One day we heard this song and couldn't stop laughing and singing. We weren't cruel to our mom and we wouldn't let anyone else be either. Life was hard for her. And us too. Love ya Ma❤
Just found out he passed away.
RIP Jerry, where life is beautifuel all the time.....
I feel this way every time I see the news!
🌈
Clip is not from 1966. It's not a promotional video. It is a 1983 Musikladen video production for the Napoleon XIV song
The video effects make that obvious, but it's good that someone (you) pointed it out. I wish they'd uploaded it in the proper aspect ratio, though.
That clears up that nagging feeling I had about it. I looked up the name of the guy, Jerry Samuels, because he just died at age 84.
Why does the laugh sound like SpongeBob?
Du hast nich Recht, ich habe von diese Sänger 6 schwarzen PVC Schallplatten in London bei Firma “Len Daniels” in Soho 1966 gekauft und an Disco Club’s in Zagreb verkauft.

As someone with severe mental illness that is thankfully well managed now, I can say that I have been in this mental state while in a state of severe mental distress. Thank god for my psych meds
It freaks me out more now than it ever did as a kid.
Lol. Lol. They are going to take you away. 🤣😅🤣😅😅
Nothing freaky about this fabulous song!! in todays world!
Right?!😂
Growing up with a mentally ill sister, this song has been with me for 61 years! She is older than me, however I have taken care of her my whole life!!!
That is very sweet of you, you are an angelic personality
@@terencemorgan1723 Thank you so much, may God bless you and all your loved ones two legs and four legs
God Bless You. ❤

My 4th grade teacher had a record player and used to play this single a couple of times a week in class ,all us kids laughed and laughed,
It was around fifty years ago
This should a therapist's ring tone!
I remember my step brother and I as kids rolling a doobie and listening to this tune over and over…I haven’t been the same since.
LOL and LOUDER...
😂
I first heard this on the radio in my early teens. Now thanks to UA-cam I can finally hear it again as well as see the video. R.I.P., Jerry.
Rest in piece Jerry Samuels! Fly high
They finally came and took him away.
This song gave me the creeps when I was kid.
I couldn’t listen to it by myself.
Someone had to be with me when this song came on otherwise I’d turn the channel!😜😂
Me too! The beat, tambourine, and manic voice scared the crap out me as a munchkin 😬
I loved it. I looked this up. They should play this for the Twitter employees who seem to be losing it over Elon Musk's buyout. People did complain about this song and some localities took it off the air. This was an early example of an offended "community" saying the song was offensive to that community. I never fiured out how these people got out of their straight jackets long enough to complain. Here another one that came out in 1966 by Frank Zappa. Eveb you dog will hide under neath the bed after listening to this ua-cam.com/video/DuABc9ZNtrA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MrWzzzW.

RIP Jerry Samuels aka Napoleon XIV
This song makes me smile
RIP JERRY SAMUELS 1938-2023
While I heard this as a teenager on Doctor Demento, there was a similar song in the fifties my mother sang/talked. It had similar themes and words but talked about the men in the little white coats, then flipped it to “ here’s the little white coats in the man…. I a little broken record….” insane female giggles follow
Thanks for the cool memory. I don't know about the 50s song but do fondly remember listening to Doctor Demento in the 70s. Fun and, in retrospect, a necessary break from the realities of teenage life.
I'm Happy They Took You Away, Ha-Haaa! by Josephine XV ?
I so remember this song at 6 years old. It was our dose of music attraction with a great dose of humor. Still love listening to this, very gifted.
Who could forget this one?
Oh I so needed this with all that is going on in the world today. I laughed so hard 🤣
I always liked this song
I heard this as a kid when it came out, and it was odd to say the least. Now, a memory repeated out of nowhere of the main chorus without thinking about this since around that time. It's even more creative and strange hearing it now. You tube man! Nothing goes away.
I had the single. The B side was the same record played in reverse.
I remember that
that's so cool!
This song is wicked! One of the best cult classics! As long as it's not in any way bad,to any degree signifinicly I LOVE WEIRD MUSIC. -CORRECT DR.
DEMENTO! Remember Neoploean XVI like in the calgone bath comercials COME BACK AND TAKE ME AWAY WITH THIS SUPER GREAT SONG! A cool song. That's really and very fun and funny.❤ it. - Sincerly!

My late sis and I loved loved this song!!!
Same as my late mum She loved this song
when i 1st heard this i was 10 and it was confusing, but I grew to love it
I remember hearing this when I was a young kid. I admit when I heard it the first time, it actually creeped me out especially when it climaxed with the sirens in the background. To this day, this song still creeps me out.
My teacher played this to the class on her portable record player. It was Grade 1 and nobody in the class was older than 6, but we all absolutely understodd and loved it. An amazing a 'hip' teacher, she sadly died of a brain haemorrage 2 years later at 21.
Fly high Jerry, we all miss you and your amazing music
He reminds me so much of the lead singer from Ram Jam, the way he use his eyes.
I have this for my ring tone I get a lot of weird looks when it goes off! Lol Love it!
My favorite from Dr. Demento. I kept bugging my European History teacher when she will discuss Napoleon XIV after Napoleon III fell from power.
I seem to remember Mad magazine having a copy of this as an extra to be cut out and played.
Reminds me of back in the day with Dr. Demento.😆 Good times!

RIP Jerry 😢 I blast this at the gym every now and then lol.
Haven't heard this in years.
Decades
"They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" is a 1966 novelty record by Jerry Samuels, recorded under the name Napoleon XIV. Released on Warner Bros. Records, the song became an instant success in the United States, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 popular music singles chart on 13 August and reaching No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart. The lyrics describe the effect on the mental health of an individual after a break-up. The main character is seemingly addressing an ex-girlfriend, and describes his descent into madness after she has left him. However, the last verse of the song alludes to his dog running away. His paranoid thinking makes him believe he is being pursued by "men in clean white coats" (i.e., psychiatric attendants) who are coming to transport him to the funny farm (mental hospital) and welcomes them as an end to his misery.
He’s upset because his dog ran away. At the end he threatens to call the ASPCA on his “mangy mutt”
Apparently he only changed it to mangy mutt at the last minute when he realized just how sick and disturbing the song actually is and wanted to give it a more comedic tone.
well it trump swan song to the big house and funny farm
@@richardwatne9477 Your TDS is showing…
@@Blizzard-kf3qmhe changed it because he thought people would think he was making fun of people with mental issues
I was 8 years old when I heard this song played on WMEX in Boston for the first time. I also remember there used to be a Woolworths store in the city I live in and they used to sell these boxes that contained ten 45 rpm records for a dollar that my mother used to buy for me and in one of those boxes there was that one single on a Warner Brothers label that had that song and on the other side was the same song played backwards. I played both sides on an Olympic suitcase mono record player I had at the time.
As a boy I was committed to a loony bin for two years. This is My song! Haha hee hee whoo whoo!!😜
I could go around singing this song all day everyday!😂
Lol I remember some one telling me it was about a dog being caught by dog catchers lmfao oh I have loved this song
Brilliant
My favourite song of '66.
As a person with metal illness (Schizehfrenia and GAD - General Aneixty disorder)I am not personally offended by this song or necessary Neopolean XIV.But of course I can understand how it DEFINATELY DOES other people like myself. This song even though it is not intended to be insulting and hurtfully offensive;Inividiblely it is to many such persons. - It must clearly be understood this kind of music humor is very touchy stuff. - Discresion SHOULD ALWAYS be advised. - With rightful and repectful desentcy and considerate humunization for our fellow man.

Fabulous, thank you, good time for you
Whenever I want to smile for 2 mins, I come here :-)
Love this song
RIP Mr Samuels.
Tip of the hat to Barry Hansen, A K A Doctor Demento.
Napoleon the 14th, with this song, was number one periodically on Demento's show.
I used to run his program for many years every Sunday night on my radio station in South Texas
If I remember correctly, the B side of the 45 was the song played backwards.

After this brutal winter, I wouldn't mind spending some time at the funny farm.
And that's what the Biden voters were singing when they elected him.

This came out when I was ten years old. I remember hearing it on the radio occasionally. Somehow I recall there was actual music to it not just clapping and foot stomping. 🤔 Maybe I'm losing it too! 🤪
Yeah, I was around when it came out, too. Probably real close to the same age. I believe this is the complete version of the song, as 8 remember it!
Stay healthy!!!
Perfect #GTTO
The first No. 1 Rap record.
It's a sad song.
I like this better than I did years ago. Funnier now that i'm older.
They’re coming to take me away
Used to freak me out as a child playing this, but still put it on and listened dozens of times. Think it was the sound of the wind rather than the words. Like Hammer House of Horror weather lol

When I had a nervous breakdown,’ this song haunted me!!!!
This is what I was singing in my head when I went to the mental hospital:3
