This is my all-time favorite podcast!! It has helped me learn so much and that translates into my gospel doctrine class! I tell everyone about you! Thanks so much for your dedication!!! Oh, and I just bought your 4-vol Commentary on the Doctrine and Covenants Casey. I can’t put it down! Thank you again for all your hard work and dedication. You are blessing lives!
I had the privilege of having Brother Woodward as my Sunday School Teacher for several years. I have missed his lessons (and his family)! Now I get to hear him again and prep for my own Sunday School class. Thank you to both brethren for this great lesson.
I've never ever had a problem with God knowing the end from the beginning. Joseph Smith said God lives in this "Eternal Now". Scriptures tell us he knows the end from the beginning. Gods knowledge doesn't take away our agency. He knows how we will act in any circumstance. But he wants us to learn how we will react in every circumstance. Ultimately what Heavenly Father is seeing in the future is simply what he already knows; where OUR choices have led us. My agency intact.
D&C 130:7 explains it according to me : God is not in the same dimension as us and he doesn't even have the same time as us. So for him, past, present and future are all before him. As you said, as long as he doesn't make us do something, he doesn't intervene and we remain perfectly free. And when we die, we pass through the veil and access his dimension, waiting with him for our judgment. It's not doctrinal but it makes sense to me...
Yep! Access to one higher dimension in time would make {past, present, future} (in a given place) all visible at once. Access to one higher dimension in space would make everything (in a given time) visible at once. Together, they enable the panoptic visions prophets of the past have experienced, seeing all of creation, past, present, and future, all at once.
See Doctrine and Covenants 130:7 God and those who reside with Him are in the Past Present and Future Where truth exists, as they were as they are and as they will be , simultaneously
This is how I explain it to myself as well. On top of that, I wonder if, at times, he intervenes because of excessive disruption by Satan to protect our agency. If Satan chose to not be part or take part of the plan, it would make sense that his involvement is there for us to have temptation/trials but that it would have to be checked. Only God could possibly know when or how much to do so having that panoptic vision of things. Thus our agency is still protected completely
I always just assumed God knew all because He knows us so well and how we will react in situations. Kind of the way we know how our kids will respond in most situations. That we needed to,prove to ourselves yep, that’s what I’d do .
That makes so much sense. Since He knows us better than we know ourselves, it's obvious to Him what we would do in a given situation 2000 years in the future. 😊
The veil grants men freedom because we dont know the outcome of things. Now God does which is why he tries to lead us to do whata right but in the end its our choice by not knowing we continually walk in a fork road taking a right and left path God puts up signs to help us but its up to us to listen to then or walk our own way.
I agree with Casey, well and Elder Maxwell too. I believe that He can in fact know everything we will do while still allowing our agency. We have agency to make choices and deal with the consequences of our choices. We gain the experience from our choices as we become the people we will. I like Elder Renlund’s teaching that Heavenly Father isn’t as interested in His children doing what is right, but rather choosing to do what is right. believe that 2 Nephi 2:27 is valuable. We know everything we need to know to make choices that will lead us to salvation and exaltation, He’s very clear about the consequences of our choices. His knowing the choices we will make doesn’t change any of that. His prophets and His Spirit always tell us. It really won’t be a surprise. I am really interested to learn about the people that never had opportunity to read scriptures, hear prophets, and Hear Him. When we read D&C 76 we get a glimpse that He knows more about those people than we can understand through our mortal experience. But like so many of these questions, it what it is and the time will come when we will all come to understanding.
I believe that Heavenly Father knows us so well that he is sure how we will act and respond. Therefore he knows what we will do but, coming to earth is for us to learn what we will do.
I think we sometimes forget that we lived with heavenly father and heavenly mother through eons of time before we ever were given the privilege to come to earth and take up a body. Heavenly father and the Savior knows each of us more so than we know ourselves. Thank you for this marvelous lesson.
30:43 who knows how God sees time. We think of it like a line stretching from past into future but maybe it’s actually more of an eternal tapestry of time threads that are all woven together and God has access to see the entirety of that tapestry where as all we can see is the small bit of past on our little thread. God can see all possible futures that are chosen by our actions and choices.
I imagine God guiding our paths like someone designing/solving a puzzle: we're all puzzle pieces, with our choices like the outies of the puzzle piece and the lessons we need to learn (in order to progress to become most like Him) as the innies of the puzzle piece. God sets up the puzzle framing such that innies and outies align optimally, such that the greatest good is done among His children. The master tapestry of our choices and our needs, woven together between the human family and fallen world, then manifests the beauty of God's creations, exalting His children as much as they allow themselves to be.
As you were discussing open vs closed theism and the effects on agency, the reminder came to me that Martin asked Joseph to ask God, multiple times. If God was going to thwart agency- he would have forbidden Joseph instead of consenting. He allowed Joseph to make the choice, submit to peer pressure and suffer the consequences of sending the pages. God tried to help them avoid the pain of that learning experience- they insisted on having it. Knowing the nature of each one of His children, He made sure there was a solution for that mistake.
God knows each of His children so intimately that He knows what we will do under each circumstance in any given moment of our lives. Knowing us so intimately, He can properly prepare for what He knows will happen due to the choices we make as we use our agency.
My thoughts on the closed and open theism question are we sometimes forget sometime that this earth's life is for us to learn and to grow and progress so we can take advantage of the savior's atonement and receive the gift of eternal life from him, we want him to recommend us to our father. This world is not a test or a growing experience for God our Father. It is for us. We still have agency regardless of whether God knows what is going to happen. the point is we don't know. God showed Mosses everything with regard to this earth. that says more about mosses than us. if we knew how it would turn out, what would we do?
What a powerful lesson. I gained a lot from your discussion of open/closed theism and the ecumenical spirit around D&C 10:67, i.e. "God is not a tribal God." What struck me for the first time (sadly) is that the Savior's testimony of the Book of Mormon came before there was a Book of Mormon given where they likely were in the translation process.
Perhaps it’s not a binary open or closed choice. Maybe God is prepared for all contingencies & doesn’t need or want to know. He wants us to choose. We make our own choices and he has a plan for every possible choice we make. It’s not surprising that we dont have the answers to all these questions…. Yet
They do this on all their Church History Matters podcasts. I find it very useful in breaking up segments of thoughts - which I think actually prevents rambling to segue from one topic to another.
We do not have free will. I remember parts of my pre mortal world. God asked me what I want to go through when I go on earth I didn’t know, but then God ended up choosing between two things that he told me that I was gonna go through and he chose the first one and I went through it.
As to the open /closed theism issue 1 God dose know everything & we aren’t here to prove anything to Him but rather to ourselves. The only way that can play out is if we have the agency to act out our choices. 2 quantum theory is the undiscovered country that blows your mind but I know enough to know that there are multiple outcomes that our finite linear human existence can’t even begin to comprehend, but I know that God can and so given the extent of the universe and that it is continually expanding, we just need to trust God that he has got it and can think way beyond just 15,000 years in the future, but eonsand that it is possible to have agency through quantum theory and that God can put it all together and make sense of it in the end.
I think it’s gods ability to accurately predict human nature. I as a parent who knows their kids. Can fairly accurately predict how my kids will react…. God is smarter and more insightful than I am. He understands the complexity of human nature. And can highly predict his children agency and choices.
While I do think He (who individually shaped us for an eternity before this life) would have an easy time predicting our choices in a given set of circumstances, you should see my other comment here about how knowledge of the future doesn't imply the future is predetermined; I believe He knows the future due to his higher perspective on reality, not because of His predictive capacity.
The agency of God is no longer required because He can do no evil nor make a bad choice. Everything that He does is TRUTH. He does not have to make a choice. Evil is no longer a determining factor to a consequence. Agency is for worlds of Probation in order to make correct choices to receive exaltation. God has already achieved exaltation so that the Agency for God is obsolete but no so for His sons and daughters, until they achieve Godhood.
In other words, God knows what we will do with our free will. I think , if God already knows what we will do and choose, we don't. We need to discover for ourselves which choices we will make.
I’ve started relying on you guys for come follow me. I’ve never been into it but you guys have made me look forward to listening and studying each week. I’ve noticed the last few haven’t been up on Spotify or Soundcloud. Is this going to be updated soon? Thanks

It seems there can be a disconnect between individual free will and patterns of society. It’s almost possible to predict the trajectory of society from a human standpoint. How much easier would it be for our Father in heaven?
At 23:35, you both mention that 1 Nephi through the book of Omni is 116. I'm confused by that because when I look at the page numbers the last page of the book of Omni is page 142. Can you clarify that?
We do not have free will. I remember parts of my pre mortal world. God asked me what I want to go through when I go on earth I didn’t know, but then God ended up choosing between two things that he told me that I was gonna go through and he chose the first one and I went through it. He knows everythin. We have no free will. Wants us to think we do so we can go through what he programmed for us to go through.
I believe that God knew the translation wouldn’t be the same because the translation was done through Joseph’s own knowledge and understanding. From the time the manuscripts was stolen and when he started to translate again the translation would be more pure because he had more knowledge and understanding. Not much but enough that evil men would twist it.
Hey in the podcast you mention a group that had people of all religions read a page of the Book of Mormon and highlight things they liked on the page without knowing where the page was from. Could I get more info on that? Was there an article written about it? I thought it was very interesting and I wanted more details. Thanks!
I do not remember where I heard the concept from, perhaps Dr. Michael Heiser, but it is the idea that God sees all possible outcomes. "Stephen Strange used the Time Stone to peer into millions of alternate futures and work out a way for the heroes to beat Thanos. He emerged from the experience shaken, revealing that he had witnessed 14,000,605 different ways things could play out." I doubt there are millions of ways a situation could play out, as human nature is often predictable. But the concept is what I like to think of. Not from a work of scripture or the words of a prophet, but perhaps this is a case of, "Seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom... " There is canon in the Marvel Universe, no?
I"m confused by the concept of "going back" to re-translate the Book of Lehi. I would tend to lean towards the occam's razor explanation and simply believe that Mrs Harris hated the work so much that she threw the manuscript into the fire.
I really wish that when referring to the Doctrine and Covenants you would not say "D&C" a "D&C" is a medical term for a procedure related to abortion. Please either say "Doctrine and Covenants" or just "section" many friends of the church who might be meeting with missionaries might be confused by "D&C" plus the connection to abortion or miscarriages can be very hurtful to those who have dealt with those traumatic things.
30:25 Wait, God's ability to know everything has nothing to do with my free will. Nobody's thoughts have any power over another person's thoughts. If you just think about it, it kinda sounds a little bit like a superstition. IMO. Cheers mates! 🕊️

@janetrobinson2699 hi...where did you find this volume? I would love to read it also :)
@ It is on the Cedar Fort Publishing Co. site called “Commentary on the D&C”
I know! These 2 brothers are awesome!

Loved your discourses on sections 10&11, especially 11:12. Beautiful. Helpful.
Truly love this principle. Pres. Hinckley was tuned in to this principle when inviting all people to come to Christ and share their goodness with us.
Cassey love the way you teach !!
Love listening to you guys. I learn a lot since I start following you guys.

Another wonderful lesson! Love the back and forth between both of you!! ❤🇨🇦
Truly loved your rich teaching. Thank you, and congratulations !
Thanks!
God discerns how we will be before we get here!😊
learn a lot from this video, thank you for helping me understand the scriptures and to know these leaders of Christ.

I'm always grateful for your wonderful insight and testimonies of the truth!
where do I find what you read from Neil A Maxwell
God's time level is at a higher level then ours. A day with the Lord is a thousand years. Kolob. He sees past present and future.
God knows every possible futures. Freewill is the variable that changes that.
Love these videos 🤙

Loved this….!!! And the comment about wanting to say “theism” made me laugh!!
☺
I don’t understand how it can’t be that God knows every possibility and its probability AND that we have agency.

Knowledge does not give obligation to act, at least for God.

So opposite to whst the cleverness of the adversary is teaching "you are not qualified" for God's forgiveness.
How would prophecy work otherwise?
Where is that Elder Maxwell quote?
I very much doubt Mrs Harris or any of the people who stole the 116 pages had the sophistication in writing style etc that would let them believe that they would not be caught if they attempted to change the words Joseph and Martin translated. I would tend to lean towards the occam's razor explanation and simply believe that Mrs Harris hated the work so much that she threw the manuscript into the fire.
Of course God knows everything, but we don't. Also God never created our intelligence, we are co-eternal with God
God is playing 3 dimensional chess

You guys really need to get rid of those idols
You really need to get rid of your fixation on those idols... you probably care more about them than they do! haha
But if they ever start bowing down to those sculptures, then I'll be right at your side, agreeing that they should get rid of them.
Devil’s Playbook:
The Great and Abominable Church altered scripture to remove plain and precious truth.
