- The Temple of Saturn was one of the great Republican temples of Rome. It still stands overlooking the Forum from the Capitoline hill slopes. It was dedicated in the early 5C BC, rebuilt in the Augustan age by L. Muncius Plancus, and rebuilt again at the end of the 4C AD, the last temple rebuilt in Rome. It stands today as a reminder of ancient Rome's lasting legacy.

Actually, the final rebuilding of the temple took place in the late THIRD century, after a fire had destroyed the building in 283 CE. This was years before the Christianization of the Roman Empire.

Well, actually the last restauration of the temple - to which also refers the inscription on the entablature - took place after the building burned down in 283 - that is the third and not the fourth century.

Darius, what are those metal loops around those columns?? they all bleed rust and are so ugly and defacing. why did they put them on the columns in Rome in the first place, and now why are they keeping them?
They are stabilizing brackets. Yes, oxidizing is really bad. They are being monitored- stabilized- but eventually will have to be replaced with what is more typical now- surgical steel. To remove them is tricky and costly. If it's stabilized (substance added to prevent further decay)- it's. best. not to tamper with for now.
thanks for the response, but stabilized in what way? Other countries dont do these ugly and harmful things to their ancient columns---France, spain, Greece, turkey,, iran..... none of them. Only the italians do this. Yes, if the column is bursting you would need a loop around it to prevent that. these columns are solid single piece granite. even if they are flaking, puting rusting, defacing and harmful loops is like pouring salt on a wound to sanitize/stabilize it. i have seen them in Rome. They are awful. So, are they just out of money to get rid of these loops or is there something else? No other country uses them, and they too have ancient columns.
@@TWOCOWS1 I believe that intervention is "historic" - so no longer practiced as such. Band use to keep cracked / damaged columns from falling apart is pretty standard- but with "modern" material that doesn't rust. These columns are not monolithic, but composed of different pieces. Thanks for your input. (We are not in charge of the conservation efforts here, nor are we conservation experts, though we do have some degree of knowledge. We cannot comment further on the issue nor can we criticize, without further in-depth knowledge of the situation. We can say that scaffolding was erected for a study of the columns' condition in the past year.)
