Even if you know that you will never be "Great" if you recognise it in others that is most satisfying. It is hard to define but when it happens in your listening you know it. The late Richard Thew conducted the combine churches performance in Sydney every year in Sydney. We we came to the last chorus in the Messiah which commences with a crashing chord all sang "Worthy" - we had sung it many times but this time when we sang that one chord he put down his baton filled with emotion - he was overcome. That is what makes a great performance it overwhelms you. So true maestro you just know it instantly. If you can get that into your performance you have made a huge advancement in your musical career. Thanks for posting this maestro - so deep and true.

Super helpful. Thanks you so much!!! Could you please talk more about listening music? What is the best way to listen in order to study music language?

To your first and important point about bringing soul to a piece, it occurred to me, while your were speaking, that we can try to imagine the composer sitting in front of us. To try, in some way, to connect with them, emotionally. This can be applied to any genre of music. If it’s Gypsy Jazz, imagine Django Reinhardt is in the room, or, if it’s Celtic music, imagine that there are dancers listening to you! This is just a way to be fully engaged with the music vs just an intellectual exercise!

This is a way of doing it. Some may also say that the composer is not important and that only your relation to the piece matter.
