- Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) - Clinical Skills - Dr James Gill
The mini-mental state examination is a core part of the psychiatric toolbox to assess memory and cognitive function - covering five areas: orientation, registration, attention and calculation, recall, and language
In of itself it is a very simple test, but can be enough to detect signs of cognitive decline which would need further investigation
There are several variations to the MMSE, with the classic mini-mental state examination in its second edition now. There is also the GPCOG examination and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), all have different pros and cons concerning their performance and diagnostic capabilities.
The mini-mental state examination mustn't be mistaken for the mental state examination, which whilst sounding very similar is actually an in-depth psychiatric examination looking at a patient's state of mind at the moment in the examination room, whereas the MMSE is a cognitive assessment

Poor guy looked genuinely terrified when he couldn’t remember the words.
Worst scenario:
Doctor: Hum... Interesting.... *scribbling notes*
Doctor: mhm…that‘s fine.
Writes down: Not fine.
You'd think being a '98 baby would be enough to quell my shock at seeing full adults born in 2000, but I'm still shaken to my core every single time
I’m a cashier and it sends me through a loop selling alcohol to ppl born in 2003 😅 I’m ‘96
2:00 Chevrolet, Zebra and honesty.
Easy.
@@dshadow01 It was actually the book... the TV...and this pen.
@user-wf2wi5wc2k it's a reference to another video.
Cauliflower, bicycle and happiness.
Ball, flag, and tree
I think confidently naming 3 completely wrong answers is likely worse than not recalling.
"No ifs, ands or buts." Legend!
"How's your maths?" Me "I'll just die now, thank you."
Same for me lol
A longer video like this would be great!
Something like a maxi mini mental exan
1:34 I am pretty sure if my doctor asked me to do this "7ths backwards counting" thing I would end up in Intensive Care no matter what...
ASMR gang wake up, we got three new objects to remember.
Person, woman, man, camera, TV.
Fine acting by the volunteer.
I can't imagine how heartbreaking it would be to have to deal with a loved one going through this for real.
You're a very stable genius my friend!
It's. . . Not great. You want to help so much.
To confirm: the patient has early onset Alzheimers.
Or, possibly, trauma.
Or more likely, adhd. Or come to think of it, a combo of trauma and adhd.
“Chevrolet, Zebra, Honesty”
Ask him about the Monica Lewinsky case
I think I would struggle with the 3 word test too!
Are you planning a video on the full mental state exam?
Me: * writes * "A sentence."
Dating tip: never underestimate the power of a well-timed pun and a good belly laugh👄
What typically happens afterwards if someone scores below 24?
We do investigations to find out what the cause is
What's the purpose of asking to repeat the phrase "no ifs ands or buts"?
You‘ve missed out on something mate
Uhh the ability to repeat a tongue twister on first try is a pretty valuable skill
It's testing for a language aphasia. The phrase on the surface is simple but for someone with language aphasia would be very difficult to repeat so this is a simple way to test for that.
This is fun !! I enjoyed watching this video !
I had to do this with my Dr. i was really bad at it i have short term memory loss.
Super 👌
So what if I'm not sure of the date, im crap at maths and I've forgotten the three objects?
You're immediately admitted into a nursing home
Bro is tha goat 🗣
Can you tell me what these are?
Glasses.
No, these are my fingers.
Would you ever review any medical tv dramas??
"Do you have any question for me?" "WHAT WAS THE THIRD WORD?!"
Actually, I wonder if others do the same, but my trick for remembering clusters of random words is to find some kind of imagery that involves them. In this case I pictured a cat inside a bowl pretending to be on a boat. 😀
On an unrelated note, what iPad app is that?
That’s interest as the three words should not be directly connected
@@DrJamesGill I've noticed in other exams one of the words isn't an object, "honesty" for example, to avoid this.
@@DrJamesGill I think that's precisely why I end up doing that, because unrelated words would just be floating there with no context, and they would be harder to remember. Now that I think of it, I've always use this kind of "visual" mnemonic: when I was first learning English (it's not my native language), I figured out that I could remember the spelling of "Washington" by picturing someone washing a ton of clothes. I also did the same with phone numbers, and over three decades later I still remember my childhood friends' landline numbers because I figured out which shapes I drew on the keypad when I dialed them!
@jollino that’s fantastic. I use some visual tricks - or did at medical school - I used the walk from my dorm room to the lecture hall, to “hang” items from, eg part of the coagulation cascade
This test takes A LOT out of you.
This doc is always dressed to the 9s. Has great style. I'm guessing he used to rock ted baker clothing.
It's a stylus, not a pen! :P
4th of January, 2000. Bro has the easiest date ever for remembering his age
It was your face
What's the cut off scores?
He said it's 24 points
What is the day of the week?? 'monday .....err Tuesday' ffs 😂
He's obviously wrong. Today is Saturday. February 1st. Lock him up!
My love life is like a roller coaster: thrilling, occasionally terrifying, and always in need of a snack break💖
Next should be Major Mental State Exam ;l
Excuse me, what did you just say? lol
Ball, cat and boat
Guy’s math was better than mine 🫠
1:39 KANEKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Born in 2000? This dude is just a baby (I was born in '99)
Sandwich breath
