In an aircraft strong gusty wind conditions are invisible, unpredictable, and you have to constantly correct to a condition that wasn’t there a second ago. He is watching the critical parameters air speed, pitch, roll, power, altitude, heading, vertical speed and out tge window. Commonly called the six pack of flight instruments. But can be grouped into multi indicators in large commercial machines.

Instructor always told me to keep eyes outside and fly by feeling the motion and sight, only briefly checking your speed, artificial horizon, etc. but that was in a trainer prop plane so idk
Commercial airliners are usually flying IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) and not VFR (Visual Flight Rules). As a student pilot, you fly VFR so you must maintain visual outside of the aircraft and not solely rely on your instruments.
My dad and uncle have a combined ~70k flight hours, and always mention that their first officers nowadays spend entirely too much time looking inside the plane. In VMC a quick cross check is all you should need then back to outside.

In case someone is asking why there are 2 Captains in the Flight Deck (formerly known as the cockpit) it’s probably because the Captain in the Captain’s seat is a former First Officer upgrading to a Captain and is being “line checked” to see if they qualify to upgrade to a Captain by a “Line Air Checkman” which is basically a training Captain. Once the latter signs off after a few days of shadowing and supervising them, the upgrading Captain is fully promoted.

🎉I was a Captain too, at sea and on the largest container vessel of the world at the time. Currents and wind can be tricky. If I had done to the helm what the piloting Captaim does ... nothing would happen to control the vessel. These guys are awsome. That's what the ones I talked to say about us. My respect to these pilots.
I don't know why but ive always been fascinated by aviation since a kid. This video is AWESOME. I've so much admiration for pilots and this video is no exception. I flown the Airbus on the Real Flight sim. Well I could do it) The yoke is harder a little...
For me I would choose the control yoke since I'm comfortable with using it.
