Is it all you have to do is be alive and keep killing summons until they just die?

In short, yes. But the mechanic is a bit more complicated than that. Every monster in the room has to be dealt with in a different way in order to get rid of it. For instance, you must not receive healing for 5 turns straight in order for the Bashillus to die. For the Verminoculate, you must be on a cell next to it every turn for 5 turns straight when it starts its turn.
And while you're dealing with all those mechanics, you have to make sure the Malamoeba summon does not stay alive for more than 2 turns.
