  • Finland says it will close all but one of its border crossings with Russia amid a surge in asylum seekers. The decision comes after it shut several others last week. Helsinki is accusing Moscow of funneling people to its borders. Russia denies the claim.

even if thats true, Finland has an obligation to process all asylum seekers under international law...
it also violates their UN requirements....
Finland should face economic sanctions or be kicked from the UN until it follows the rules.

The unofficial plan from the Russian government might be to intentionally get their neighbors to close most borders. When the next wave of forced military conscription comes (after their upcoming election), there are less opportunities for Russian men to flee the country - while the Russian government avoids spending their own military to close border crossings.

They're not asylum seekers, they're elements of demographic warfare. It isn't the first time and hostile parties - not limited to Russia - that wish to harm Finland will continue to do this as long as they have the ability to continue. Therefore the only way to stop this is to close the entire border and freezing the asylum system. Doing so would benefit other European nations that are and have been for years been targeted with demographic warfare. these include but are not limited to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Hungary.

Yeah but as a fin that fuels the current political discourse here in Finland which causes more political divide among the people here. The whole asylum seeker thing here has been a major political issue here for the last few years. So yes it actually has consequences and this border closing can be used by Russia as a tool for antagonizing Finland further. So no this set of actions by Russia is not really a joke. It has also been confirmed that some of the people coming in with the influx of asylum seekers are trained military people who could potentially be dangerous and or spies.

The disparity in reporting this issue on the Finnish border vs the reporting of the exact same issue in Poland or Lithuania near the Belarussian border is shocking. Suddenly everyone is so aware and well informed that it is Russia meddling in the European affairs again. It is depressing that the only perspective on Poland when it was dealing with the same problem (and much higher absolute numbers of people at the border) was 'racism', 'hostility' and being painted a backwarded, far-right country who did not share the same humanitarian values as the 'civilised' western neighbours. As a Pole who lives in Finland at the moment and has lived in the UK for a while, this makes my blood boil. Shame on all the 'journalists'.

No... they are playing "the game". Western diplomats have stopped "playing the game" since WW1... and this leaves western nations tone-deaf to the situation around the world.
Diplomacy is supposed to be a process of give and take... The "international community" (really, a coalition of mostly western countries) are dealing in *ultimatums* that suit them and their values, without entertaining the arguments of the other side and their worldview at all. In the process, they are alienating a LOT of potential allies, and general good will (which there is a lot of, believe it or not). Contrary to popular belief, most politicians do NOT want meaningless wars, mass starvation due to sanctions, widespread condemnation and public "shaming" of their nation as a whole, and so on.

This might not be a good idea.
As Russia implements more conscription efforts more young men will be heading to the surrounding countries "betraying" Russia. These men are disproportionately the more educated, middle class people that are essential for Russia to keep running.
Even if Russia is currently behind this surge, when they next do a conscription if Russian see that the west has abandoned them they will likely stay home rather than make a break for it, leading to more soldiers and greater financial gain for Russia.

Russian doctrine in Ukraine right now seems to be minefields. Huge minefields and defence works. A lot of the early war goals have been abandoned, Russia is most likely not going to collapse the ukrainian state. Instead they want to hold on to territory they got.

The EU wants to shove administration on other parts of the EU, and if that fails buy it from places like Turkey. And then they act surprised when Turkey starts to treat them like a client state instead of the other way around.
And now the tough crowd thinks this is what we need more of. A whole string of other nations to outsource security and administration to. And they're totally going to do what we want because the EU will pay them.
