  • In part 3 of Terry Doe’s Airgun Academy, he’s back coaching the enthusiastic Nicole Moore, building on earlier lessons by explaining the importance of good trigger technique and follow-through - holding focus on the target until the pellet has reached its destination. Terry likens it to the job of postman: you’re still on duty until the letter goes through the letterbox.

Terry you make it sound so simple. When I first started air rifle shooting I had no technical skills had to make it up as I went. Been watching videos and yourself and a few others and trying to figure out what you’re doing and trying to copy. Now that you have explained and showed the technique I can improve on my technique. Cheers Terry 👍👍

Excellent drive and some of the finest hunts in Europe . 1 rifle and 3 scopes makes it quite all round
    Scope 1 a 1-6x
    Scope 2 2-12x
    Scope 3 Aimpoint
Rifle that fit the user and cartridge the user can handle great is more important .

I learned / found out about follow through back in the 90's!
I was already a good clay target competitor with a percussion
muzzle loading shotgun. But I wanted to compete with a flint
lock shotgun so purchased one, but my normal high scores dropped
down to 5/25. So I started to video my shooting, problem solved!
I could easily see that I was lifting my head off the stock while
the muzzle loader was still going off (just like you said).
I would never have though it would transfer through to rifles too.
    Thank you so much.

I switched my S200 to a single shot tray after wondering if this would improve my groups. It didn't, but what did improve it was the fact I wasn't even thinking about loading another shot and staying on target instead.

I coach at a target rifle club and we shoot small bore and full bore rifle (and clay shooting). We teach follow through religiously with all our young shooters. It MASSIVELY improves their scores and creates a great stillness around each cycle of shot. It improves their breathing control, it slows them down and gives them the full picture of what it takes to be accurate and consistent. It makes repeatability possible for even newbie shooters. It also does help with shotgun coaching to a degree, by curing the lifting of the head off the stock! If you have the mentality to think beyond the shot release, you remain smooth and consistent.
As a hunter, it is the single most important part in making the correct decision on the precise point at which to take a shot, accurately and humanely. Once the picture is safe and looks right, breath, relax and think through the stillness beyond the shot release.....observe.... reload.....and be ready, still in the aim, to take a follow-up shot if required.
So good to see you doing this video and making the point so clearly!!
