Artists who do fanart ALWAYS say, only do fanart if IP you love. We know a girl gotta eat so do what works for you. I mean... if you turned all your favorite IP characters into cats, that would be very niche for you!
As a Monster High fan, I would /love/ to see more art of them in your style, but I do think striking a balance is the way to go. Especially since your original work is badass and unique! I really commend your openness about sharing shows that don't perform as well and keeping such a positive attitude. It can be tough when there's such a personal connection to the art you make. Loved seeing your haul, and I'm excited to see your Japan vlog!
I did a market in Duncan at the fairgrounds - it was supposed to be a huge market. I made $26. It cost me almost $300 just to get there plus the cost of the booth. I left, very disheartened, and didn't even bother doing day 2, since my time was better spent at home, making more art. I wasn't the only one, absolutely everyone was disappointed with their sales, some didn't make a single cent.
That’s very upsetting. In those situations I feel some blame falls on the market organizers, not that anything can be done. I am glad you opted to tap out and spend your valuable time more effectively!!
Going to Japan is very exciting! I went last September, I can't believe it's almost been a year. I will say, the reason everyone goes in spring and not summer (other than the obvious cherry blossoms!) is the ~heat~. Take care, and drink lots of water!!!! The humidity is no joke there, Japanese summers are brutal!
Have a blast in Japan!!! 💖 I’m sorry the fest didn’t do as well as you and the other vendors had expected. Also, this might be a silly question, but why did the venue require you to wear a high-vis vest for set up?
It’s just a rule of the venue! The venue hosts other events where, say, forklifts might be driving through the hall, so it blanket applies to every load-in.
I went to anime revolution as just a regular con-goer this year, and I bought the least I've ever bought at a convention. I'm not sure what it's about for others, but for me I was just super picky because daily life is so expensive for me. When I do buy stuff though, it is usually fanart.
I was surprised to see you at AniRevo!! (Usually catch you at VanCAF) Looking forward to see how you would develop Ralphie. And again, love your cats!!
After a bad con I also occasionally feel like I should go back to doing more fan art, especially when seeing customers walking around with posters/prints of popular IPs. I think you have such a good unique thing going, though! No one can mimic what you do, keep at it and it will get better
I can’t imagine it would be other artists!!! A lot of my peers were reporting theft so I guess it do be that hard 🫠 I always carry my valuables with me if I am not at my table just in case!!
OOOO Japan well you just missed some of their holidays which are fun because of the festivals they have in different cities. You should have a fun time and its hot over there well...they are having some typhoon weather but by the time you get their that should be over.

"just don't steal from me, is it hard not to steal from me?" absolutely 😂 crazy though if it's other artists that do?

Have fun in Japan!
I know someone who did AniRevo, he didn't do well either, so you're definitely not alone.
