  • This soutache jewelry tutorial shows how to make a soutache necklace and is an advanced bead embroidery project. Soutache is a very interesting technique. Soutache (pronounced SOO-tash), which is also referred to as "Russia Braid", is a common element in the French art of Passementerie. It was developed in the 16th century. Passementerie incorporates a wide range of trims, braids, and tassels used as decoration on haute couture, draperies, and furnishings. In Soutache and bead embroidery, however, lengths of Soutache are stacked together to create a more visual element and a stable base for the addition of beads. Soutache can be curved and shaped into many patterns. And because Soutache is generally a textile, Soutache jewelry has two wonderful properties. They are that it is light weight and like a well-made piece of clothing, it will conform to the wearer's body. So, don't be afraid to try something new. Jump in and reap the plentiful Soutache rewards.

If you want a really good book on how to make soutache jewellery you might want to try Anneta Valious book called Soutache. I believe its the first book written in english It has just been published and 30 tutorials with lots of instructions. I have just purchased the book myself from Amazon and its amazing! For all those people out there making negative comments dont knock it till you have tried it...good on the person who has tried to explain this difficult technique!!!!

I enjoyed your tutorial. It was lengthy, but for a beginner like me it is perfect and thanks a million for publishing this. Dont worry about the negative comments. You are great!

Why all the criticism? Svetlana, you yourself say how long these tuts take and how you don't have time. We're all learning here, or at least we were when we started. I love and appreciate this video very much. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Bravo hcdc for posting it. I just hope you haven't been bullied off or scared away. I've subscribed and look forward to your next video. Cheers, Lane

Thank you very much for the tutorial! Don´t listen to those, who are presented themselves as perfect! They are not, as we all do. I am looking forward for another one! Have a nice time!

Have you ever watched any of the Italian or Spanish videos re how long it takes to get started, they normally begin with their nail extensions showing for a while, but I like the end products they produce, so it's swings and roundabouts. This lady is just trying to help us, yes she is not an expert with the video, but who is other than yourself.

Let me know where to send it, and feel free to correct it if you find anything you'd like to change, and be brave to publish it if you'd like to share - it's yours.
BTW, I used the backing there, but in a different way. If I'd decide to go farther, I would find how they do that to make their pieces so airy. Meg mentioned a book in her tutorial, you might want to look at it. Amazon is a good place to look for it.

Hi Svetlana, problem is there are very view tutorials in english so I'm very happy one get's me through it, and you are righyt, many are in other languages, but for the life of me I can't see what they are doing on the back, they only show step by steps on the front the most of the time. :-) I think the video quality has a lot to do with it not looking so good, bu a 30 minute upload in HD 1080 p takes 10 hours, this would take almost 3 days to upload in that quality. :-)

Dear friend. Please, do not ask me for tutorial - you were the one who scared me from it forever (four days to create one!) - I have too much on my plate already. The beading for me is the way to take my mind far away to forget about the physical pain, and it works.
I will create a Word doc. for you to share my experience (not a big one, but I am like you - love a good result, even it was far away from perfect).

Dear Gianna. You do not really need tutorials in English because it's all very visual. There are lots of tutorials in Polish, Italian, Check, Russian on UA-cam. They do awesome job! I am not a master under any condition, and of course you can learn from any tutorial - at least partially, however with an attempt to teach, it suppose to be a good level of an experience (I see it from yourself). I never intended to offend - just was really upset with the quality. I am sorry if I'm wrong :(

It should look symmetrical and flat. The backing is used very rarely (mostly for bracelets), and the front looks the same as the back, and if it used, the piece is still VERY flat Did I mention a symmetry? This technique lets you create a tasteful piece of art you call jewelry. I am really sorry, but those two pieces look more like beaded pillows. The better is expected from hcdc - Eri established a very high standards that should be kept.

Svetlana - Just so you know, nine years later someone believes they understood your comment as it was intended.
You wanted to be helpful by providing additional information and did not mean to offend. I think I may have accidentally offended someone in a crochet tutorial hosted by a beginning crocheter.
Since I know crochet inside and out, my goal was to be helpful and let her know how to relax her finished product (steam, like from an iron -- no pressing and check frequently; you don't want to overdo it). I think I said I hoped she'd find it helpful because "it showed," meaning the stiffness of the fabric, which is common for a first-time crocheter.
Thank you for this information. I saw a few videos on this technique several years back but my favorites list said the videos had been removed.
As she explained it, I thought you had to put a backing on every piece. I'd be okay with that for a sizable necklace but thought I would have to adjust my brain to accept it and do it for earrings.
I hope to finally have some supplies in hand and begin playing with it in the next few months. I hope to find a tutorial on how to make the back look as good as the front, which I can control in most crocheted products.
If I can't find the video, I'm going to have to figure it out! Thank you for letting me know that it IS possible!

Svetlana, I'm trying to make my very first piece very soon and I have never done it before, so I welcome any video in english explaining it, like this one. But iff you are a master at satouche, please I beg you, show us, teach us in english... not enough soutache vids out there :-)

rpprevost is right. It looks to me as though you haven't done much of this, your technique is missing a few points. It is a difficult technique to master. Love the colors you've chosen.

Just a small comment. The soutache "ribbons", are not ribbons, but trim. It is used on clothing as a trim and decorative element, and for making jewelry.

The reason for most of the negative comments is you need to turn off the camera. Gather your materials and gather your thoughts, stop saying "as you can see" when all we see is the back of your hand. Too many changes in person perspective through the entire hour. Ex: "The next thing we're going to do is I'm going to take our...." Decide who's doing what and stick to it. Six minutes to tell us we need a plier, needle, cord, scissors, etc. At 9:36 you say "To get started...".
