I must thank you so much, teacher Jennifer. 2 days ago I used your video lesson about "phrasal verbs" for my class, (pupils aged between 14 and 17 y.o.). It was very interesting and motivating...
Hello. I am very happy to hear that the lesson was successful. Please remember that many of my videos have links to WordPress posts. Look in the video descriptions. I have teachings tips and activity handouts on my blog. Regards!
Thank you ma'am for this video. But I had some questions. I am an 11th grader in Bangladesh, now I want to pursue my studies in The US. So, Can I continue my high school in the US from 11th grade? Or I need to start from the 9th grade? Waiting for your kind reply.
How can I thank you?! Your pronunciation is so clear and ....thanks for the subtitles! I can understand every single word you say because you speak so slowly and clearly but, knowing that subtitles are there, makes me feel...safer. I am from Torino, I adore your language and listening to you really helps me. THANKS! GRAZIE! Mirella
I'm very glad to hear this. At least two people asked me about education in the U.S. this summer, so I felt it was a useful topic to address. I think also think it's good listening practice to process all this information and compare and contrast it to systems you know in other countries. Thanks for posting your comment. Kind wishes!
Warm greetings to you and Abdulfattah! I wish I could include individual greetings to everyone, but there are too many requests for me to meet in my regular lessons. Perhaps in the future I will come up with a format that allows me to address individuals on camera. In any case, I am very glad you two are visiting my channel, and I thank you for the kind support. Best wishes!

Wow, Jennifer, I have always had doubts about this and as EFL teacher, in Brazil, I often had to try to explain this to them, but I had never seen, read or heard a more clear explanation. Thank you so very much !
That's a good suggestion. Thank you. I'll note it for the future. Indeed, there are many "small" topics that need to be covered so everything makes sense in conversation. Grades are confusing to talk about because each country has its own system. In the U.S. there are quite a number of different grading scales used. Regards!
Hi, Jennifer! I just wanted to thank you for this very useful video. It came right in time as here in Algeria we have a whole unit dedicated to "Educational Systems Around the World". The American one covers a big part of this unit. Through out this unit students have to study and compare different educational systems. So, any kind of material is welcome. Thanks again Jennifer for all the efforts you consent for the sake of education. Take care!
@Mario Noviello Finding a job after college depends on many factors: What did you major in? What college did you go to? What city are you in? Did you do an internship or some other kind of project related to the field?
Interesting names to bring up. I think the challenge today is to work within the system and allow for education to include the teachings given at home. Home schooling isn't possible for every family, but that doesn't mean parents cannot be actively involved in their children's education. Here's to curiosity, competition, and the freedom to question! I wish children everywhere a good education. Cheers!
Thank you Jennifer, I always had asked myself about the Education System in the USA. and now I can make the differences with our system. Also I want to tell you that I have learned a lot English through your Videos.. Best regards from South America.

If any possible, please make a video on wedding customs/ceremonies in the U.S. My students keep asking me about that. Thanks a lot for everything.
That was really well explained and absolutely clearer than any ones. Thank you for updating and it helped my understanding about the US system of education.
so helpful thank you Jennifer , you have made teaching this to my ACCESS ( program ) students in Tunisia so easy . Thanks a lot you've been such a help
Hi, I am so lucky to have you as a great teacher. I need to ask you a couple of questions. 1-What is the difference among certificate, diploma and degree? 2- What is an education system and how do you know this system is good or bad and who designs it? 3- What is the philosophy of a subject? Like when you pursue your PhD and you study philosophy of that subject. Than you
+Farooq Muhammad Hi Farooq. 1. diploma = the document (the paper) you receive. You can hang your diploma on a wall. certificate = also a document (paper) but for some specific skill or type of training. It shows you complete the course or the program. degree = your qualifications / your level of knowledge attained at a university (college degree, bachelor's degree, master's degree) 2. Tough question! There are different systems used around the world. Then at different institutions there are different curricula. You can do a search on "educational systems" and "curriculum design." There are different rankings that help you understand which schools are considered strong. My opinion is that one approach cannot be the best approach for every learner. 3. Another more complex question. PhD is a Doctor of Philosophy. Basically, the person who holds this degree has done in-depth study of the theories and history of that field. They have a broad understanding of the subject. Does that help?
Hello. You can ask someone, like Mr. Duncan, about education in the U.K. I couldn't speak with any authority about that. Here in the U.S. colleges tend to be smaller than universities. Universities can be made up of colleges. They also may have more programs. Universities also usually have much larger sports programs (American football, basketball, etc.) I didn't want to feel lost at a large institution. I preferred the community atmosphere of a small liberal arts college. :)
Glad it was helpful! I have review exercises on my website. Here's one.www.englishwithjennifer.com/c/USsystemofeducation.easy.htm It's under Students > Exercises (PC) > Misc.
Yes, I went to junior high, too. When I did research for this lesson, I discovered that "middle school" has mostly replaced "junior high" in the U.S. today. I went to preschool and kindergarten at different schools. Then I went to "grade school" and it had two buildings: an elementary building and a junior high. After 8th grade, I went to high school in the city. I hope you'll try out the exercises on my website. Regards!
Nice to hear from a real person online :-) I played it for them today and made up a fill in the blank worksheet to accompany it, so they would be engaged and use both their listening and writing skills. Quite useful, thank you!

Our education system is very difficult one. 😢 we can get our first degree age 27 ,28 . Our high school examination is very very difficult . It face 40000 science students and first 800 ranks get university( MBBS degree ) love from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
Yes, there's just too much to cover in 10 minutes or less. I could have gone into more detail about colleges and universities, but time was already tight. I also felt that a bachelor's and a master's degree were more common than an associate degree from a community or junior college, so I gave those priority. I'm glad that you got something out of it. :)
Hello Jennifer! Thank you again for your support. I've already bookmarked your ELT blog on WordPress,. I'm really looking forward to learning more from you. Greetings from Brazil!

Hello. Colleges and universities both have 4-year undergraduate programs, and both can also offer graduate degrees. As I understand, universities can have colleges within them, so they tend to have large campuses. Many 4-year colleges are small "liberal arts" colleges. Universities might offer a broader range of subjects to study. Universities also tend to have larger sports programs (especially for American football and basketball). Again, there are good universities and colleges in the U.S.
Thank you ma'am! It was a great presentation; all clear and informative. Also, the way you present is just fabulous, and so pretty. Thank you again for your help. Have a great day!
Hello. You'll need an official translation of your transcript(s). Part of the admissions process will include demonstration of proficiency in English. You can locate the school(s) with the program you need and contact their admissions office for guidance. (Note: bachelor's degree - - bachelor of arts, bachelor of science) Good luck!
Since I'm not one of those gifted people who are proficient in several languages, I couldn't tell you much about that! I wish I knew 7 or 8 languages very well. :) In any case, a multilingual person (polyglot) could work as an interpreter or translator. There could be opportunities in international business or foreign affairs. I could also see the advantages of knowing all those languages while working in tourism. The cruise line industry, for example, might be a possibility. Good luck to you!
In Saudi Arabia, our education system is pretty similar to America’s system. Students can join in kindergarten, but it’s not mandatory. We start with elementary school (6 years), then middle school (3 years). Finally, high school (3 years). After high school, your future job depends on your results in high school. Some students go to the police and the other go to university and complete their study as the same way Americans do.
Recently, I am interested in the education system of other countries specially America. I am curious about what their subjects are. So I would take a look.. Any references help?

than you , very informative video, just what i was looking for. but i kinda also was looking for another thing. like here in Morocco, it's mandatory to have a high school diploma to go to college. the problem is, the diploma is not general. it's you either get a diploma in literature or science. if you're high school major is literature that means that anything remotely connected to science is out of your reach. that causes a lot of problems. because in high school one is a teenager may make a mistake of choosing science or literature!! and that will simply ruin his life ! I don't know how is the transition from high school to college happens in the US.
Yes, here in the U.S. a high school diploma allows you to move on to any kind of institution of higher education. However, in high school students usually have electives, especially in the last two grades. Those are courses chosen by the student and not considered mandatory. It's mandatory to take a certain number of courses, but you have some degree of choice. So, some students may take advanced biology or calculus in 11th or 12th grade. My son's high school has a range of elective courses: physics, introduction to architecture, engineering, video and sound production, and even ceramics. In short, colleges and universities will see what interests a student has based on elective courses and extracurricular activities.
