  • I found Tori Olds, PhD thanks to a fortuitous UA-cam algorithm.
I had just discovered IFS (internal family systems), which seemed like a powerful approach to add to my coaching toolbox.
Dr Olds' videos on IFS were informative, wise, concise, well-constructed, and really helpful. So I reached out and asked if she'd be willing to come on the podcast to talk about IFS.
Dr Olds said that IFS wasn't really her expertise; she had studied it and incorporated it into her work and teaching, but her real interest was a physiological and psychological process that underpinned not just IFS, but every single method and technique that produces permanent, pervasive, transformational change.
    OK, now I'm intrigued.
After watching her videos on Memory Reconsolidation, my mind was blown. Is such a thing possible? The total erasure of persistent, sometimes decades-long habits and symptoms?
It was like I've been spending my life trying to get better at pull ups and here comes someone telling me that levitation is possible. What the... ?
Between setting up the conversation and having it, I read (the first half of) two books by one of Dr Olds' mentors, Bruce Ecker: Depth Oriented Brief Therapy: How to Be Brief When You Were Trained to Be Deep and Vice Versa (1996), and Unlocking the Emotional Brain (2012).
Plus I read Alun Parry's How to Remove Trauma Response and joined his coaching program.
So I have a bit of a head start on most of my listeners, but not much!
Enjoy this mind-blowing conversation about what's possible in terms of changing old habits, patterns, and symptoms through a compassionate, brief, and reliable process.

Tori, this was absolutely fascinating! I am learning so many new ideas and new approaches to therapy that resonate with me and give me new hope for healing! I am 75 years old… I like to comment on the question of therapy, “in-person” vs virtual therapy / zoom. I was a believer that, I had to the room because of trust issues (C-PTSD). However, being forced to use telemedicine or no therapy was an easy choice. I tried zoom. I learned that working with a therapist is MORE about ”chemistry” than anything else. The therapist easily could read my facial and body language, so trust was an easy bond to build! So, those of you out there who have an opportunity to work with a therapist on-line; please try an initial first meeting. If you feel comfortable in that meeting enough and you think trust is there. I hope give it, at least, a try! I think it will only take a few sessions to feel that sense of “TRUST”. You’ll be surprised.

This was such a informative podcast I learned so much with Tori Olds. I wanted to say to Tori that when you do the UA-cam series on Coherence Therapy if you could do a detailed, one hour(🙏🏼) demo on memory reconsolidation. Derek Scott ( who I found through your videos) is amazing in his demos and I learn so much from them. Reason I asked for a demo is that I have heard Bruce Eckert speak on memory reconsolidation and he
makes it sound like such a easy thing to do. In this video you said it’s not easy and requires a lot of skill and prep work from the therapist and the client can’t intellectualize it but has to have strong emotional response to the new learning in order to change the old schema. So pls show us how you( as the therapist) does this with a client( Derek does this with another therapist as the client) This type of learning would be so powerful to watch. BTW I am not a counsellor just a viewer who has been transformed by your videos 🙏🏼

Yeah, I do very much agree that demos are so helpful!! I did get permission to read a transcript of an actual session as part of the series, so that will be in there at least!! You know, Derek’s demos are actually a great example of memory reconsolidation in therapy as well. IFS allows the steps of MR to unfold beautifully! It reactivates the old learning through talking to parts, and then disconfirms it through a new experience with the Self. So glad you are watching those!!

I heard a priest (Fr Jacques Phillipe in his book "Interior Freedom") call this "limiting beliefs" to my great benefit. As soon as I heard the term I knew I had a bunch of them.
