Eastwood leaves it up to viewers to decide if The Stranger is a ghost or not, but there are plenty of clues suggesting he is.
@@patriciasutcliffe2201 The brother scenario makes more sense than a ghost. There's no scene where he's transluscent or walks through walls. To the woman he drags off into the barn, he's real enough.

It was maybe 1977 and I was 9. About 10:30pm the opening scene came on the TV. I was super excited. I remember that evening so well. Great movie.
