- We all know the legendary Stairway To Heaven solo by Jimmy Page...
...But what if it was played by someone else like Peter Frampton, Eddie Van Halen or Eric Johnson played the Stairway To Heaven Solo? I brought in my friends Eric Johnson and Phil X to find out.

Check out my Back In Black Solo - In a Parallel Universe ua-cam.com/video/kip6MkkYgKg/v-deo.html
Wow that was so weird without the solo.
LMFAO that Eddy solo totally reminds me of the movie Back to the Future when mcfly goes all ape on guitar. You can really hear the difference between the two era’s. Just a little bit faster now.
What about crazy train or even walk this way?
Parallel Universe? OK. EVH is just another Steve vai, and Jimmy Page is just another Gene Simmons. LOL.
I want to hear Bjork sing Zombie, ya-know that Cranberries song.
😮
But that’s a whole different topic.
Average youtube music channel: "Here's my impression of what Eric Johnson would sound like playing the solo to Stairway to Heaven."
Rick Beato: "So I called up Eric Johnson to see if he wants to play the solo to Stairway to Heaven"
The EVH one was pretty good. I liked it.
Eric Johnson tho...
he's awesome. nice comment bro.
@@mloftin6472 he needed more gain and\or compression, that might have fixed some problems there. but i guess he didn't do too many takes either... it's a work in progress :) but still, you got to see the man play it.
@@McALLAN1983 I thought they were both good. I just liked Eric Johnson a lot better. This was a novel assignment from Rick. I think they did a lot with it in a pretty short amount of time considering what Rick tasked them with.
The idea of being able to just call up Eric Johnson and asking him to play a solo just blows my mind.
I agree, but it was pretty awesome to see the man himself do it!
❤
I'm surprised he didn't hit up Peter Frampton.
Best comment!
Well, it should be pretty obvious.
I mean, Rick can totally make these things happen with the fame that he has.
A pro like Eric is obviously out of reach for us 'commoners'.
In my opinion Rick did the best solo. Melodic, technically flawless, good flow, brillant timing! Thumbs up!
The "Peter Frampton" solo was my fave, as well!
+1
As massive an EVH fan I am - Eric's solo was stellar and enthralling.
It was. The EVH solo didn’t sound good with the track. Either not a good solo or shows evh would have only been good in his band with his music.
@@tb2324 respectfully disagree. It sounded like something Eddie could’ve played and it didn’t overwhelm the rest of the song
I love how Rick says "Why don't I just call up Eric Johnson?" as if that's a thing that people just randomly do
Me - I go to Facebook and search for “Eric Johnson” and I get like 5 million hits for that name and devote the rest of my life to messaging all of them in case I might get Eric Johnson’s phone number...
I'm in the business and I can't get Eric Johnson's phone number...lol
Massive name drop moment but one I can definitely appreciate!!!

“Why don’t I just call up Eric Johnson, see if he’s into it?” - Rick Beato
I often think that. Then I remember that I don't have his number, and he never sees my smoke signals.
@@mikepaulus4766 Ive seen them but I didnt think it appropriate to reply...
He said that, I lol’d and said ya right ... then there he was. Just amazing.
...I think I’ll phone call Trump, or talk to God...

Eric's solo literally brought a tear to my eye. He plays with such beautifully delicate and fierce intentions. Great video. Rick Beato is the shiz
he looks like he is dying, i saw him perform in 2000 he was looking sexy
Aging gets us, I’m 56 and I can’t believe how much muscle mass and skin resilience I’ve lost since I turned 50 - I’m just now starting to really up my game on anti aging eating and exercise.
Me too ~ tears ~ completely unexpected!
@dbedard67 Sagging skin, deteriorating eyesight, memory loss, brittle bones, chronic arthritis, lactose intolerance, deafening tinnitus, forgetfulness, fumbling and stumbling... aging definitely isn't for the faint-hearted. But as the old saying goes, "it's better than the alternative."
@@petedude2lu3 There's quite a big difference in human age between 46 and 69. It's going to be a very sad day when E.J. leaves us.
Eric Johnson absolutely blew it out of the water. I played back Eric's solo dozen times. He is just a monster player. The way he uses octaves is so sweet sounding. No one sounds like Eric.
The guy that did the Eric Johnson solo nailed the style of Eric Johnson, 100% authentic.
He is even called Eric , what are the odds .
Lol
lmao
@@killkult his surname is Johnson too and he normally plays a sunburst Fender Stratocaster
Damn dude what are the odds
🤣
“What did you do at work today honey?”
“I re-recorded the solo section of Stairway to Heaven and then pretended to be Peter Frampton”
“That’s nice dear”
Exactly.
Things I do in my retirement. lol
zkhott1 yeah and then I took a nap...wore my rear end out. I dreamed I was Paul McCartney.
“Good for you my hard-working man-child.”
ha ha man that's so funny
Seriously Rick, how do you come up with these ideas? This was just an incredible video....I really enjoyed it!
I agree mate :)
💯🔥
Very, very nice solo Rick.
If I closed my eyes and heard you play that solo... I would have thought it was Frampton. You hit his style perfectly. Just as easily as anyone could recognize Carlos Santana guitar sound. 🎸 Very amazing 👏 and profound!
As I opened my eyes
"Why don't I just call Eric Johnson to see if he's into it"
Yeah, must be nice to have Phil X and Eric Johnson on speed dial. Haha
It's like saying I'll just call up Page and ask him to come down and reimagine his stairway solo🤣
As one does. LOL
I can unmistakably speak for everyone saying that we all would love this to become a new series
Hear hear
Agreed
Absolutely.
Hell Yes!!!
What is Phil X and Eric Johnson played Eruption? What if Eddie and Eric played 'Show me the way; What if Phil X, Rick and Eric played... The solo to Detroit Rock City... the possibilities are almost endless. More Eric....
Eric Johnson's sound is so crystal clear and melodic, like Brian May each have their own unique sound that's hard to replicate.
This is my favorite episode to date. Please do more of this!!! Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Eric Clapton bring it.
Imagine being so badass you could casually call Eric Johnson for a UA-cam video
And he joins it
Holy S**t this needs to become a regular series. Great job.
I was thinking the same thing. It’d be real nice to see this done on the regular. Great video
Absolutely! Hope he reads the comments. Rick, think of all the iconic solos that could be done with “Eddie” doing his version of each, along with “Peter”, and perhaps a guest guitarist for a third, or Eric of course. I would like, share, and comment on every one 😊
Eric's tone is simply unmistakable: melodic, elegant, goosebump-inducing. You can always hear him out among hundreds of guitarists and he doesn't even have to follow the maxim of many guitar heroes, which often follows the motto: faster, shriller, more spectacular.
For me it's definitely the best of the three solos.

That was fun! You were great! Phil's was over the top!!! Yeouzah!!!
Annnnnd then there's Eric. Wow... made me think of this epic quote: "He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist." - Saint Francis of Assisi.
Wow! Eric Johnson might actually be asked, let alone allowed. to play that solo in a music store...
Adam Watts ...wow
It really was the most beautiful. PhilX was very accurately EVH. I am not familiar enough with Frampton to tell, but still a fresh take.
co founder of the jesuits was very good with his words, I'm sure he did a lot of good along with his pal Ignatius
@@ratpH1nk I've got no special love for Rick... But seriously he killed that in Peter frampton's style.
He said “so I called up Eric Johnson” so casually I thought he was joking.
Yo Dawg, I heard you like Eric Johnson, so I called up Eric Johnson so you can Eric Johnson while you Eric Johnson
When Rick does it, it's not name dropping.
I know. Just casually name drops EJ. lol
Rick knows everyone lmao
He did do an interview with EJ folks, and so, he obviously got to know him and surely has his contact info.😉👍
The care and reverence that all 3 of you showed was very powerful, from the, to the, soul! Thank you. 👏👏👏👏👏
The EDDIE solo was just how I expected, great! RIP EDDIE
Wow Eric Johnson really nailed playing like Eric Johnson! Who would've thought!
Great idea, Rick....All of you did masterful alternate rides. Any one of them could very well have been the solo that all local "Guitar Gods" (and their apprentices) would be trying to cover note-for-note, just like so many of us HAD to do with Page's solo from the very first time we heard the tune.
And for good reason, as it turns out, given how popular the song quickly became & still is to this day. Only wish I had a dollar in my wallet for every time it has been requested of us at a gig.....I could build myself another Harley & have $$ left over. (Well, that may be a slight exaggeration...Better throw "Free Bird" in there, too.
Scooter parts are not cheap) 🤔
But I know you get my point.
I was actually getting a little burned out on the tune as a whole, and then saw Ann & Nancy Wilson do it with Bonham, Jr., & that incredible back-up ensemble....Wow.
Anyway, Rick, an interesting presentation from you today, as usual. I am a dedicated fan & admirer of your work....Keep it comin' Buddy 👍😉😎🎸
Totally agree! NO ONE plays Eric Johnson like Eric Johnson.
😆😆😆😆
Eric plays melodic fast and very clean guitar solo.
@@scottmccollum9979 except Guthrie govan of course
Dude just straight up called Eric Johnson to play in the style of Eric Johnson. Nice!
That EVH impression blew my mind.
How can Eric Johnson always be so spot on in any song??
Eddie Van Halen being depicted playing Stairway to Heaven, dies the next day--Coincidence? (Rest in Peace Eddie)
It certainly gives an extra dimension to this video - brilliant! - And there definitely will be some 'less peaceful' guitar solo's from now on in heaven (RIP EVH)

You just have to love the talent of these phenomenal musicians! 💯
Van Halen and stairway to heaven has never meant more than it does today. Rick, you absolute fuckin genius. Perfect timing. RIP to the greatest guitar player Rock and Roll has ever scene.
We’ll miss you Eddie Van Halen.
He will be missed
I’m sure the timing was not up to anyone...I can only imagine Rick would have liked it if Eddie could have been here to listen to the Stairway version and gave it a thumbs up...
It's quite a coincidence. I had a friend of mine accidentally pass away years ago. The coincidental thing about it was also the last interaction I had with him I was playing guitar and he was about to leave and he stopped and said one more time before I leave play Stairway one more time. And as I was playing he walked out the door and was the last time I saw him... Damn.
@joe cheney I blasted 'Eruption' into my headphones and just cried my eyes out, and I'm not usually too emotional. The saddest news since we lost Neil Peart. RIP, Eddie. Heaven is rocking right now!
Had to come home early, gut punch, crying 😢 EVH
Eddie is smiling in heaven looking down saying: "pretty close Phil"
All right I got to say this one thing. I think Phil did a good job, however at 8:44 I feel like Eddie would have gone for the higher octave for the tapping. He like to have more space in between his hands and do the taps on the high frets. For me when I listen to Van Halen that's something that's always stuck out.
@@brokeboypokemon7077 Agreed.Phil did a phenomenal job but that is exactly what I was waiting for too. Also more of a split(with all due respect),of the tapping in general.Eddie had a way of doing phase 1 and phase 2 of his tapping that built the climax for the end in which Phil nailed! I have to say it is the best EVH sounding solo Ive seen that was made up solely by the artist. Kudos to Phil.
Phil crushed this. I am rather thoroughly impressed with this effort!
@@mariocampa4647 I highly concur!

The Beato/Frampton version is by far my favourite one and I´m glad that neither E.v.Halen nor Phil X were mebers of LesZeppelin 😄
Hard to describe in words the beauty of Eric Johnsons playing. His touch, his tone, his approach. Ear candy.
Why isn’t everyone talking more about Rick’s solo? It’s seriously fantastic.
imho it 's the best on the video
I love it! He was the genius that came up with the solo on Cardinal Motion which is one of the greatest melodic solos I have ever heard he is VERY underrated!
@@ozyrinis yeah, clearly the best. Beato really impressed me, and the other guy was technically great, but Eric Johnson over delivered. It's hard to replace a part of a classic song, but he added something new.
I think it's the best one here, too. Gorgeous, economical, clean. Like the original in those ways.
His was by far the most melodic.
I love how Phil was smiling like Eddie when he was playing the solo for him. It ends up being a happy tribute, instead of a solemn one had it been recorded today.
How true Barbara! ❤️
I'd kill to hear Jimmy's outtakes!
and BTW Rick's solo was awesome!

@@RickBeato Nice concept. Would like to see a part 2 that would be more radical, various guitarists playing in their own styles
1. Adam Rogers or Julina Lage (great jazz guitarists but who play multiple styles)
2. Charles Caswell of Berried Alive (Highly innovative)
3. Charles Berthoud (bass solo as fluent and melodic as a guitarist)
4. Yvette young (innovative )
5. Sean Angus Watson ( beautifully melodic and toneful)
this could be done with the given backing track or re-made one in different styles of Stairway, jazz version, metal etc or no particular style -open

I totally agree. It is SPOT ON!! Beato’s solo was great also. He left the original out of the equation and made it his own (Frampton style).
@@kirkjones-orangutanorlion Beato had the best solo of the three, it fit the song better than the other two solos.
Affirmative, less so on the drums. Admirable attempt but the kit was lacking. No hate for the attempt though. Playing anything that Bonzo did perfectly is a mountain that most folks would simply choose to pass on. The EVH needed some more tapping, harmonics, and a dive bomb or two IMO. Eric Johnson has always made me want to throw my guitars off the Cliffs of Dover as I once again realize how much more I need to improve to possess one scintilla of the skillset Mr. Johnson possesses. Wow! Makes me really miss another TEXAS boy SRV. RIP Stevie! We will never forget you and I am positive the chorus upstairs really appreciates having you blazing through solos playing for the Big Guy! Quite a retinue of players there now but it would have been nice to have had a few more years prior to your far too early exit stage left. Us native Austinites were so blessed with regard to how many times we were treated with your myriad of performances across central Texas that I (for one) took it for granted. I miss those halcyon days of SRV, Eric Johnson, Ian Moore , W.C. Clark, Jesse Taylor, Buddy Guy, the Sexton bro’s.,etc, etc. That was when Austin really was the live music capitol of the world! Those days have faded away like an Aquafest poster or the graffiti on the the little bridge you drive under on Lamar heading towards 6th street. Man, I miss Austin 1975-1990. Thanks for moving away from your shite hole state and changing Austin into the same crap hole you left trying to escape. Yeah California, I’m talking about you!!! But I digress...🥺
Best UA-cam channel of them all, period. Cheers from Italy.
Eric Johnson is an absolute monster of a player, bit such a calm and down to earth guy in person. You can tell through his playing that everything he doesn't emote or say outwardly, he says and expresses through his guitar. This was a great video and looking forward to more!
It's interesting that no matter who is playing my brain still hears Jimmy Page, as if the original notes are so indelible they exist even when they're gone like a phantom limb. I wonder if anybody else had this experience.
Fantastic video, Rick.
I did.
I agree
Totally! These guys are all great players, but Page wrote (and played) such a perfect solo for that tune.
Yeah , I kinda had this comparison track running through my head throughout all 3... It's indelibly implanted in whatever area of the brain that stores that sort of thing I think...it was a fun little experiment with maybe the most iconic guitar solo ever...I think it's important to note how accurate they got the rhythm track, that in and of itself with the attention to detail, right down to the twelve string fender was remarkable..but like a phantom limb, expounding upon that metaphor the body was so close to the original , that I could hear it too...I wonder if it was tough to overcome that for the 3 guys, to not get dragged out of Frampton and into Page would have taken a certain defiant concentration...I will continue to ignore it, I won't think about it ...tricky to strike the balance I'd Imagine... staying true to the experiment insists that you think about it, but not so much as to forget your playing in the style of whomever you're supposed to be imagining their interpretation might have sounded like... except of course Eric Johnson for obvious reasons lol... overall that's 12 minutes well spent for me, of course I haven't counted the time I'm spending commenting, but I'm finished so Coda if you will☮️
BrotherDevious Let’s face it, Page’s solo has been playing in everyone’s head for 45+ years. So unless you had truly never heard it before, it’s tough to just ignore it. It’s no different than lyrics for songs that you haven’t heard in decades yet still remember when the song is played
How apt this unfortunately became. Now Eddie's walking that stairway.
LMA UK - Wow...great comment!
damn that shits deep 😔
He probably flew over it.
And everybody in Heaven can't wait for him to finish that climb... Just think of all the greatest guitar players that passed before him, setting up his equipment and tuning his guitars for him... I'd love to get to see that show!!!
He's running with the Devil
Phil really nailed the EVH sound, Rick did an amazing job at producing Frampton's phrasing, and Eric is just, well.....Eric (always amazing), but as good as they are, it does show, IMO, that nobody could have done it as well as Jimmy DID do it. It really is the perfect solo.
That was so cool Rick that was a real treat to enjoy. Thank you. Do some more

Pete Townshend on Edward Van Halens death.
eric johnson played stairway to heaven on a rick beato video, we’ve reached peak humanity, it’s all downhill from here
I prefer to think of it as a reset for the atrocity known as '2020'. It took us from the gutters of Venice back the peak of Mount Olympus. I only hope that the path back down is extremely slow and we don't fall off a cliff again. lol
The dude who did the Van Halen style KILLED it!
I’d never heard of anything Led Zeppelin until July 4, 1979. I was 15 and it was KEarth 101’s annual “Firecracker 300”, the top 300 songs of all time. Throughout, I heard pieces here and there and decided to record some of the top 20. After number 2, they took a commercial break and I set the living room cassette recorder with pause then play-record so all I need is to release the pause. Bryan Byrnes, “Mr. Rock snd Roll returns and in his most Reverend voice, introduces the number one song and I release the pause as it begins. I recline in the recliner nearly flat as if on a rocket about to fly into space. It was a FREAKING TRIP!!! Never has a song blown me away like that before or since!! I lived in the projects and my summer job was to retouch 90 federally protected murals (1979, 80 & 81) which are featured in the Black Eyed Peas’ “Where is the Love”. Btw, Willie was born 3 doors from me when I was 11. So I took my next paycheck and bought Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II and the 4th Led Zeppelin albums at Music+ in Monterey Park.
I’ve been a total LedHead since even had reserve tickets for the 1980-81 World Tour that never happened because of Bonzo’s passing.
All that is to say, with ALL DUE RESPECT, this is a HORRIBLE idea!! It’s like asking Frieda Khalo to paint the Mona Lisa!! YOU ARE GOING TO GET A UNIBROW!!!
And so you did. 🤷🏻♂️
"So, I thought, why don't I just call Eric Johnson?"
...as one does.
Only logical thing to do like it’s no big deal
Whhhyyyy do I get a feeling you might also follow Joe Scott? :)
Years ago a guy I worked with was working on a car with his buddies late one night. This "guy" approached them and said he just bought the building and was going to turn it into his music studio. That guy was Eric Johnson. As the story goes Eric was super nice to them and gave them plenty of time to get their stuff out. Nothing like humble greatness.
Yea I'm always on the phone with my guitar heroes. Just shootin' the breeze with Mike Campbell the other day...lol
Lol
This NEEDS to be a series, I'd love to see how other guitarists would play the Back in Black or Shook Me solo
Absolutely! Also more what if Steve Morse played Stairway, or Steve Vai, Satriani, Plini, Al di meola
Yeah, let Paco di Lucia play Shook Me ;)
Yes please!
Eric johnson ... Just... Unimaginable. What phrasing
wow, that fender 12 string is the exact tone. Love that signature EVH quick picking. Holy crap, Eric's part is so good. It highlights the backing track the best.
So I am recovering from surgery and I was in quite a bit of pain. For 12 minutes I forgot about that. And I am still buzzing from this. One of the coolest things I’ve seen on your channel. Much better than drugs. Thank you!
Mans said “hol up lemme call Eric Johnson real quick”
Envy.
I feel it. AND Phil X.
Yeah almost as impressive as when George W Bush would just phone up God
Jason Lieberman 😂😂😂
Thank You Jimmy for your timeless rendition...
an absolutely invaluable resource. I can't thank you enough for this
Rick captured the essence of Frampton 👍
Phil captured the essence of EVH 👍
Eric was his own sound 👍
❤️ this concept, so creative, so talented, more like this please!
Rick nailed Framptons tone!
Love this concept, cant wait to hear more just like this!
Loved all three, but Eric, playing himself, was unreal.
For sure, such a treat. His music has been on my mind lately so I pulled out a transcription of Dover. Turns out it’s still very much out of my reach, haha.
100% agree.
He is the best at it
That was freaking awesome! I just came across this video today, the 43rd anniversary of Bonzo passing. Watching you guys make the track with all the drum fills gave me goosebumps. Nicely done!
