She was so articulate, passionate and present while giving so much truth and sharing all that wisdom. Crowned or not, Mariah is Drag Race Royalty. CHEERS!💋
It blows my mind how there hasn’t been more ballroom representation on drag race. Are ballroom queens just not auditioning or does the show not want them?
More the latter. But also, there have been ballroom queens on and queens to go on and learn ballroom. Aja is a massive name in the ball scene. They generally get mistreated
@@slenderhulk4044 Olivia lux too. But it would be nice to have another established ballroom queen on the show and educate the kids on it, instead of some bar queen doing duck walks and “death drops”
After a couple months after the whole Aja / ballroom scene vs anetra I honestly think Aja was right . Yes did Aja need to go at her like that on twitter ? No but honestly after hearing how Mariah explained how the ballroom scene is and how protective over it , I don’t blame Aja and the ballroom scene being upset especially if she reached out to anetra to help her so I get it. But y’all don’t have to also attack anetra especially attack her character when y’all don’t know her .
ESPECIALLY b/c now (even if unintended), Anetra created an entire fandom of young people who will type "walk that fucking duck" to anything they see that has a duckwalk now. It branded it as an "Anetra" thing, when it's not hers to begin with.
Mariah!! Make a fan’s 101 of ballroom video! I know of it through Pairs is Burning and Drag Race, but would love to learn more from a veteran performer like you.
I have been interested in ballroom since 90s when I first saw it on tv. Where / how can I find out to respectfully attend (watch) ballroom? Or is it a closed community, you have to be invited by someone from the inside? In LA but have no one interested in drag to go with
It’s cool to hear you’ve had a longtime interest in ballroom. LA has a vibrant ballroom scene. I would suggest using social media to follow people who are in the scene. Balls are open to the public but you only tend hear about them if you are looking for them or in the know. Social Media makes it easier :)

Adding to the idea, something that pisses me off is how most of the time those people that have done ballroom inspired moves or performances on and out of Drag Race don't even have the respect of doing them correctly (Denali's duck walk is bad, whatever Willow was doing on I Hate People was an insult, Anetra's hands performance is very unpolished). You wanna do an element of vogue? Okay, go ahead I guess, but at least TRY or don't do it at all.
Denali - yes was crunchy but never claimed that she was the authority on ballroom. Could’ve called her in instead of calling her out, but whatever. Willow - yes wtf was that Anetra - y’all are giving bitter. Again, Anetra never claimed to be the authority in vogue, just said she liked to do it and did her best (which was very good). Maybe not all of her elements were 100% but do you have to do everything perfectly every time to be allowed to do it? Should people not go to balls and try because they’re not good starting out? Everyone has to start somewhere and Anetra was showing her vogue talents at the place she was at currently. I’m sure she’s better now, but after the constant call-out instead of call-ins and judgements made about her character and her as a person (which you cannot deny a lot of the ballroom scene was doing this) I wouldn’t be surprised if she stopped altogether, which is what I think y’all wanted. I don’t mind y’all not wanting her in the scene, but just say that instead of making it seem like she’s making a mockery of vogue bc that is a STREEEETCH. It just seems disingenuous 🤷♂️
@@AshleyMillionaireMitchell I don't even wanna read, I'll just say that this is not about claiming to know or not, I don't really care if you are in the ballroom scene or not, what I said is that they should learn how to do it.
When Aja reached out to Anetra via DM to try to learn more about her knowledge in vogue, instead of having a conversation Anetra just shut off and blocked Aja which doesn't show her desire to learn more about the voguing and is being disrespectful to it. And of course instead of acknowledging it the Drag Race fans just call it gatekeeping when Aja is mad that her effort to educate and show Anetra the actual ballroom scene were treated poorly. Which in retrospective it is not surprising when Anetra did the same thing when she ghosted her booking gig and not being responsible or professional about it - she is just someone who only care about herself and do everything in a closet. I think it's totally fine if their technique aren't there to begin with - everyone has to start somewhere and might not have the access to the proper ballroom scene. As long as they are willing to learn more about voguing beyond that and treat it with respect, it's the attitudes that are matter the most.
Boohoo. Americans LOVE that victim mentality. Don't worry, most people butcher French when trying to use ballet terminology. There are plenty of gatekeepers in ballet too, Russian VS American VS Italian. It's not a "black and brown queer" problem. If Leyomi is a legend in the ballroom world, by all means, borrow and make it better, because while she's consistent and has the longevity, her dancing just comes across chaotic to me.
Mind you anetra did it give ballroom the respect, she literally said she always wanted to go to a ball but there wasn’t no balls in Vegas, she didn’t have the money to travel to different states to go to ball so she could only learn about the scene from ballroom people on UA-cam and she has so much respect for the art and anetra said that ON THE SHOW, and still got hate, they don’t want to respect, they want to gatekeep, if y’all wanted Anetra to learn the fundamentals of the ballroom scene y’all should invite her and take her to a ball, people form the scene immediately start attacking her not once ounce of heart was shown.. im from ballroom and I think the reason Anetra got so much hate from the scene is because out of all the queens who isn’t apart of the ballroom, anetra was hitting some of her moves correctly, from her dips (except the 360 one at the finale) to duck walk, and people were mad she learned to do it well from youtube as many of us had to learn in person at the balls or by somebody in person
Well during the taping and afterwards, people threw balls in Las Vegas so why wasn’t she there? Even her drag race sister Tamisha Iman organized some. 😊 It’s not the task of the people of the scene to teach Anetra (or everyone for that matter who „deathdrops“) how to behave with the culture of someone else. This should have been her top priority to educate HERSELF how to behave with the culture, which she didn’t do. And to come at people like LEIOMY and Aja is not the way she should have gone, had she really wanted the respect and acceptance of the ballroom community.
