  • Correction: The FX-4CR has a Built-In Sound Card!
Today on HamRadioComms I show how I'm using a Red Steel Money Box to store my HF QRP travel kit. Everything is in the box to get on the air.

Great idea for a cheap go-box case!

Can you tell me what LEN means on your screen display under DSP?

Meh. Great to see other ideas, but I simply use the box the FX-4CR comes in placed inside a backpack. My Komunica HF-PRO-2-PLUS-T and Gabil GRA-7350 antenna wouldn't fit in this tiny cash box along with the Gabil GRA-ULT01 MK3 tripod. Everything fits nicely inside the backpack including a RigExpert AA-35 ZOOM analyzer and ANTUNER AT-100M ATU. I even carry an extra battery in the backpack. Thanks for sharing, but I find the stock case inside a backpack much better for my needs.

I have a similar setup in a maxpedition day pack with different qrp antennas, line to throw throw wires in trees, adapters etc.. the case included is really nice like you said and I use that too.
The red steel box is an experiment to see how small a package I can include everything to get on the air an idea for people to keep in a small area like an EMP box, or safe. Everything to get on the air. The built in SWR meter can help to tune the antenna without an antenna analyzer.
However, given a choice, like in a backpack, I'd also usually use larger antennas, an analyzer, etc to make everything easier.
Bottom line for me is the fun of trying to make the smallest package that will still get on the air, and the FX-4CR is the smallest radio to do that with especially at 20W!
      Thanks for the comment !

Your video of the screen is nice and sharp, sharper than some other reviews I have seen. I have this radio. Have you used it on CW yet?

Thanks. I haven’t tried CW or digital yet… though hope to try them in the future.

I should have bought the FX-4CR when he was still selling them. He has been on hiatus for a few months now.

I think that’s normal for his production schedule… he does them in batches with usually about a 6 month wait between batch releases.

There is a built in sound card, no?

Yes there is! Thank you for catching this.. I was doing another video concurrent with this one and I confused the two on the sound card. I put the correction on the first line in the video notes.

That antenna is a terrible idea. Do not use an Endfed random length antenna on this radio - you’ll fry the finals.
Use an end fed half wave cut for 40m its resonant on 40 20 15 10
I can’t get behind using a metal case with a lithium based box case

A metal case is fine, ammo cans are used all the time.. and lead acid would be the same danger in gel cell etc. The bioenno is totally incased and no exposed terminals so pretty safe. This was just a prototype idea, if i was doing it for real I"d cover it in non conductive something better than just foam i have in it for better safety.
