  • The year was 1919 and the battle of freedom was going on in India, on one hand, Mahatama Gandhi was trying to achieve freedom with their way of non violence and on the other hand, our revolutionaries were fighting with Britishers with the weapons.
Actually, India gave a lot of help to England during the first world war, more than 3 lakhs of soldiers only from Punjab gave help to England. By this help, we were thinking that England might gave a little bit of government in our hand but British government didn't do anything such but started rowlatt act (also known as black law) under which British government could arrest anybody without any trial in court. And on 10th April 1919, British government arrested two leaders of India Dr. Saiffudin Kitchlew and Dr. Satyapal under rowlatt act. People of India got angry by listening to this news and start violence. British government started firing and also gave the order for the curfew.
The day was 13th April 1919, when people of Amritsar was celebrating Baisakhi and also protesting in Jallianwala Bagh against the rowlatt act and for the release of Dr. Kitchlew and Dr. Satyapal. The protest was all peaceful. But suddenly, British Brigadier General Reginald Edward Henry Dyer came to the Jallianwala Bagh and block the only entry and exit gate with a canon and order his troops to fire on the crowd. Without any warning, his troops started firing on the crowd and the protestors started running here and there, some people started jumping into a well and died. The firing continued for 10 to 15 minutes and almost 1650 rounds were fired continuously. More than 1000 people died in the massacre and more than 1200 were wounded. In the August month of the same year, dyer presented a report and declared himself very brave and said that he could fire more bulleted if he had. In his support, the lieutenant governor of Punjab that time Michael o Dwyer also came in front. General dyer was the one who went to Jallianwala Bagh and shooted the protestors and Michael o Dwyer was the one who gave him orders to do so. In 1920, on the orders of hu ter committee, general dyer gave his resignation and went back to London. But their was a person who watched this massacre in front of his eyes and that person was Udham Singh. Udham singh ji was in the Jallianwala Bagh during the firing and he was giving water to the protestors there. He saw the massacre with his eyes and he took vow to take revenge of this massacre. Udham singh ji was born in 1899 in Sunam village of Sangrur district in Punjab. When he was very young, his mother and father died and he and his brother passed their childhood in the Central Khalsa Orphanage. After leaving orphanage, he got joined with the revolutionary things and he was also very impressed with Bhagat Singh. He also did the travel of many countries like Brazil, Africa, America etc. to understand the mindset of the people in different countries. In 1924, he joined ghadar party, the party which was founded in 1913. In 1927, Bhagat Singh ji called him back to India and Udham Singh ji came back with some troops, weapons, pistols, revolvers, grenades etc but in Lahore, he got arrested due to keeping illegal weapons with him. He passed his 4 years in prison. The general Dyer who shooted the protestors in Jallianwala Bagh was died in 1927 due to brain hamarage and Udham Singh ji was in the prison that time but after dyer, Udham Singh ji considered Michael o Dwyer as biggest culprit. In 1931, after release from the prison, he went to Kashmir and from there he went to Germany. And in 1934, he made his way to London and started making plan to kill Dwyer. The day was 13th March 1940, after 21 years of Jallianwala Bagh massacre, there was a meeting of East Indian Association and Central Asian Society in Caxton hall of London. Michael o Dwyer was there to give a speech. Udham Singh ji reached there with a book in which he was hiding a revolver. He hide his revolver in the book by cutting the pages of book in the shape of revolver. When Michael o Dwyer started giving speech, he spewed a lot of poison about India but in between, Udham Singh ji got up from his seat and started firing on Michael o Dwyer, he fired 6 shots one after another and two shots went to the Dwyer's chest and Dwyer died right there. Some of the bullets also hitted other British officials and they got injured. After this incident, Udham Singh ji didn't run from there but he did surrender. In custody, when Britishers asked him about his name, Udham Singh ji told his name as "Ram Mohammad Singh Azad". With this name, he wanted to told about the unity of all the religions in India. On 4 June 1940, British government gave him the penalty of death and on 31 July 1940, Udham Singh ji was hanged till death in pentonville prison.
