Chengdu is definitely my favorite city in China. It's so open and free compared to some of the other cities I've lived in. The nightlife is crazy fun, the food is amazing, and the people are usually very kind. Chengdu is constantly modernizing and actually has a pretty modern feel compared with other large Chinese cities, so it's best to hit up some smaller cities in Sichuan like Yibin if wanting to experience old-school China. There are a lot more 'fly' restaurants and hole-in the wall places.
