In our annual master class, NYFF director Kent Jones sits down with world-renowned filmmakers for an in-depth conversation about films from other directors that have influenced and inspired them, their talk illustrated with film clips. Appreciated this interview. Jarmusch comes across like his films: in the moment, a bit of magic.
Not being able to see the video clips is a bummer.
At least all the movies mentioned are available somewhere.
Agreed... We're missing the precise clips being discussed preventing us from gaining all there is to learn from this master
the scenes could've been added ..before uploading the video..
copyright issues obviously ....
Great interview with great film propositions!!I once saw a part of Dino Risi's "Il Sorpasso" in Italian TV when l was studying the Medicine in Italy (10-15 years ago) but not the whole of it....I also have seen some Nicholas Ray films but not the one proposed here by Jim!! So l look forward to watch some of those movies proposed here!!I have to say that his last film "Paterson" is an absolute masterpiece & l put it on the same level (even if l am not a ranking/charts guy) with his '84-'05 consecutive masterpieces!!!
Mystery Train is one of my personal favorites by Jim Jarmusch!
Jim worked on Neil Youngs BARN music video nominated this year for a GRAMMY...Jackieblue💙💙✌

And IMDB
Thanks for posting this. They don't always mention the titles of the movies they are discussing and without being able to see the clips it can be an exercise in frustration. Any chance you could post a list of the film clips?
Jarmusch himself is a film. What a guy!
John Alonzo replaces Stanley Cortez as cinematographer on Chinatown, however they're both credited, so Jarmusch is also correct.
The end of Point Blank is NOT on Alcatraz, rather it is across the bay, at Fort Point, which is located under the Golden Gate Bridge and perhaps better known as the place where Jimmy Stewart fishes Kim Novak out of the bay in Vertigo!
Jarmusch rules!!
"cinema is as varied as literature"
I love his music..
His greatest contribution to the art of cinema is a sound effect followed by "Why am I here?"
What´s the name of the film he mentions at the end next to Robert Frank´s Pull my Daisy?
The stranger?
Pull my knickers
The beginning of Naked Kiss is one of the best opening scenes. Great movie.
Too bad they can't include clips. Seems short clips would fall under fair use.
OK Film Society of Lincoln Center...why no list of the film clips in your description? That's a bit chintzy...
Still the best
clips?
i thought the interview is going to fall off the chair
hahaha
And what is this film with great angles and sequences?
I only had this on in the background while doing other things but I think he was talking about Branded to Kill then, wasn't he? It's worth checking out for sure. Awesome cinematography in that film.
Which Aki Kurasumaki film is he talking about?
Take care of your scarf Tatiana
Thank you!
What is the road movie called he doesn't mention the name?
Are you referring to the Aki Kaurismäki film: TAKE CARE OF YOUR SCARF, TATIANA ?
+A.J. Meyer that's the 1 thanks for that
Anthony Patterson
You're most welcome. You were right, neither Kent Jones or Jim Jarmusch mentioned the title, so you probably weren't the only one wondering what film they were talking about.
Lovely NERDS!
Vivat !!!!!!!!

I kind of hate the interviewer

Jarmusch: Cool motherfucker

who else loves that u can speed up the videos on youtube? :P
No Tim? No Greg? No "On Cinema." Sorry, dummies.
Still a 5-bagger talk
and yet here we are.
Never heard of this guy, recently saw "Broken Flowers" by off chance. Found the film interestingly odd. Odd casting, unusual roles for each actor/actress involved. .(Tilda Swinton unrecognizable) Lots of satire and negativity. Ending without resolve and frustrating. This director messes with emotions and comfort zones. Take film set location. How hard would it be to find an urban neighborhood where Jeffrey Wright's basic $85,000 split level spec house full of kids is built next door to Bill Murray's $500,000 + custom built contemporary home. Odd how one guy who works 3 jobs would be so close to an aging wealthy play-boy bachelor who retired early. Odd orchestra' wind instrument Latin style music to play on his pussy-past hunting expedition/trip. My first impression of Jarmusch: Hardest interview since Peter O'Toole. Punk Rock hair style is the only firm commitment he's ever made. Uses psychotropic drugs to expand imagination. Handsome smart and sexy in a uniquely odd way. Nothing ordinary about him. Every one-night-stand he's had. Those people can honestly claim they got some STRANGE. Read he sometimes composes his own music and original score to support and accompany his films. I'll bet those compositions are written with chords in A-minor-flat Regarding hair he converted "if you got it flaunt it too if you got it, rat it.".
A minor flat, ppfff , and why the flat?
You sir, have a gigantic ego
You couldn't be farther off in everything you said lol
Wow you are commited in your attack
@@PanelDaze Not really. I had just found out earth is flat. For real. I was lead material witness for Garcia. In Thompson vs Garcia. July 2019.
Barrow County Georgia. Trial about shape of earth. Summary Judgement - Flat. Appealed - Flat. Appealed to higher court (different judge) - Flat.
Look it up.
Change the speed to 1.5
You're welcome.
Vivek Subramanian how do you change the speed?
Vivek Subramanian
Ha!
This is the first time I've messed with the playback speed and I must admit, that was frickin' funny! Thanks!
Somebody switch off the interviewer's mic. And take him to a bigger chair if you can.
