For everyone wondering what's the small medallion with the anchor and RM on it on the left grip of the pistol, it's the symbol of the Royal Navy, in italian Regia Marina.
These pistols are timeless classics. BTW, the "RM" marking on the walnut grip stands for Regia Marina, that is, Royal Navy as Ian correctly points out. For the record, the Beretta M31 was also adopted by the Traffic Police and Forestry Corps. Wikipedia and other Italian websites report that total manufacturing ranged between 7,000 and 8,000 units.
It's funny to see where the Beretta grip hump originally started, now that trend has gone against the hump and everyone wants Vertec style grips, the M9A3 has a grip angle more akin to this old gun.
My grandfather had such Beretta. During WW2 he was in Yugoslavian resistance movement - partisans. He was commander of one of brigades and once they captured some german colonel (Oberst), so he took his pistol, and kept it as a war trophy. That was a/m Beretta M 1931
I've had 2 favorite 22 LR's in my life , the 1st was the 22 version of the M 1934 made in the 50s that worked so nicely I really miss it and a early post war Walther PPK in 22 , both ran like well oiled sewing machines and the only stoppages being ammo related. It would be nice to see the Beretta reproduced today to compete in the plinker market I think I would prefer it to my P-22
I have this same model with a holster and spare magazine. My Great-Uncle brought it home from Vietnam as a war trophy. He took it off an NVA soldier. How it ended up in vietnam is anyones guess. He brought back a few interesting pistols and knives. He did 3-1/2 tours in the Army. My Dad was in The USMC and did two tours. He brought back 3 pistols and a couple bayonets. I guess many of my family took home prizes. My Grandfather on Dads side was in WW2 and My Grandfather on Moms side was in Korea. My Great Uncle on Moms side was in Korea and Vietnam. All brought back stuff and I'm honored to be the current owner. Sadly they have all passed now. Lost my last Uncle in 2015. Whenever I look at those guns or go shooting I remember the stories. I recorded many of them so my Son and hopefully one day grandkid(s) will know their family history and hear the voice and watch video of some awesome Men from their family tree. Sadly it is very difficult if not impossible to bring back war trophies. Even if you purchased the handguns You cant bring them back. I think that is so wrong because some very interesting guns show up in warzones. Ian's videos are a great reference point for anyone planning on adventure series or looking for interesting older guns to find the blueprints for and put into a LARP for spies to smuggle across borders. Btw. These older pistols are so very Tintin.
I love Beretta firearms, particularly the cheetah series pistols. Easily the most elegant .380 ever manufactured. No other firearm company can even boat half the longevity and provenance.
I'd love to see a video that is a history/tour of pistols leading up to a Glock, or whatever pistol you consider to be the modern standard. I'd love to see all the pieces that were developed in other guns before being combined in a modern pistol. (Ie the captive recoil spring in the Ruby .45's.) I think that with your style of storytelling, combined with your ability to handle an immense amount of firearms, you could lead us from the revolver, to the first auto loaders, to the wonder nine years, into the world of polymers, and leave us with a greater understanding of the modern fighting pistol. Most likely supposed to be a stand in for the Beretta 418 he uses in the original books by Ian Flemming, they switched to the PPK in the films because the armorer for Dr. No said that the 418 was a "Ladies gun, and not a very nice lady at that." 😂
I think we ca safely say that Ian will forget more information about guns after filming each video than most of us will ever know about almost any gun in the first place.
beretta actually demonstrates incredible "will to succeed" with this line of pistols. like so many companies, their product was "not quite right" for gov't work. many just gave up, many just tried more gee whizzery. beretta, on the other hand, did it the same way browning did, lots of calender pages of minor improvement, feedback, repeat. most unusual of all, is it actually resulted in a damned finely made, reliable, "perfected" design, of genuine "jack knife" utility. it's basically the ubiquitous ".38 snubby" of my youth in a well tailored italian suit, lol. it honestly verges on the iconic, just like a "dick special".
They did that in a game called Combat Arms. Makes Squirt Gun sounds including the sound of water squirting, but you can only hear it if you pay attention.
+KennyCnotG from what Ian said, the 1934 was the one that upped to 380 and the 1935 went back to 32 with the widened grip, like the 1932. He had also mentioned the 1935 had the changes of the 1934 only it was in 32 caliber. So back to what my original question to Ian was, what were the differences between the 1932 wider base grip 32 caliber and the 1935 wide base grip in 32 caliber.
Beautiful piece! 31 grips fit on 34? I want wood grips for my 34, cant find any for the older 34's, only found them for more modern 34's without the lanyard. Thanks.
+ForgottenWeapons ive got a model 1934 produced in 1936 with the royal army markings but no import markings. Might this be a bring back gun from WWII or just the days before import marks were required? im always interested in the personal stories of these historical firearms and how they got where they are.
I have taken a long, long time to really realize that the supposed advantage over a revolver of being able to do a fast reload by changing magazines in a semiautomatic simply didn't exist in the real world for most of these guns as issued or purchased. You drop your magazine and your gun was worthless because you only had one magazine. You had to extract the magazine and reload it and stick it back in and this might actually take longer than reloading a contemporary revolver.
Even in Europe military pistols are issued with two magazines. But pistols are meant for emergencies only. If you need to reload more than once you are probably dead already.
Nice pistol. Good easy field stripping. I can see where the grip on the 34 is probably a little better. Are the grip panels plastic or hard rubber? Nice to see the antecedent. Great video as always.
Is it my imagination that the barrel could fall out when the slide is held open with the safety and the gun is in any other position other than upright and level?
I have an m1934 and I have never had my barrel come out unless I intentionally bumped it to remove it . I don't know about the fit on the 31 but my 34 seems to have a pretty positive grip but not so much so that it requires force to remove . Really amazing engineering in these guns .
Saw a video once on the production of modern beretta pistols. They were showing the production of model 92's and apparently the tolerances they are machined to are so tight that they have a machine they place the almost finished guns into that racks the slide open and closed over 300 times just to loosen them up. Superb tolerance and machining in these pistols.
After a quick reference check. .380 is not 9 mm (It is 9.652 mm). A bore of 9 mm, as a fraction of in inch is slightly smaller than .357, which is exactly 9.068 mm
in reloading they are the 9mm and 9mm short. actually the 9mm case is tapered and the 380 is shorter straightwalled. bullet diameter is the same, i think its .355, but the weight is different. 380 is 90 or 95 gr and 9mm is usually 115, 124, 147. in my video of an HK MP5K im shooting 9mm loaded with 380 lead 90 gr wax lubed projectiles, very smokey.
Even old Berettas look superb.

That's the way the Mauser 1914 became the Mauser 1934 - just the shape of the grip was improved in the same way.

Out of battery safety; disconnects the trigger if the slide is not fully forward.

Whenever i here "Fiber" anything on something of this age i get nervous, they used to use asbestos in EVERYTHING
There is no point in using asbestos in a buffer pad. It's frail.
