Freddy was my neighbor. You would see him walking his little dog around the block, stopping to talk with neighbors along the way. My Mother knew him pretty well and she would have long conversations with him. He was always so gracious.on a few occasions, i would take an evening stroll to the nearby convenience store and Freddy and his family and friends would be socializing in his backyard. And i would hear them play and sing; sometimes seemingly improvising. It always sounded beautiful and they seemed to be having a great time. Texas is a special special place. I used to drive to Jalisco, Mexico from Detroit, Michigan with my familia and as soon as I got to Texas, I felt like I was in Mexico but not quite till Nuevo Laredo, if that makes sense. I was always enchanted by the state from Texarkana to Laredo but ESPECIALLY once I got south of San Antonio. I couldn't wait to get to Laredo to see all those beautiful Mexican Laredo girls working at HEB. And I can remember getting through aduana, getting the sticker to put on the car and then driving towards Monterrey, increasing in elevation little by little. Saltillo was next then the race was on to get to the Jalisco state border. My dad was born in Texas, Fort Worth, to be exact. He was the only one out of 11 kids my grandparents had to be born in the USA. As a Michigander, Texas will forever hold a special place in my heart.
