    Are people out here really looking at USB-C cables just for charging? If I'm going to "invest" in a high quality USB-C cable for charging, it better also do high speed data transfer

      What cable does that I’m interested

    • @brodymiller9299

      While some cables can do both, high speed data transfer makes them much thicker, stiffer, and more expensive, especially with longer lengths.

      Its not at all an investment now. With a decent branded cable a standard 1m 60W cable could be perhaps £7-8 a 100W say £9-11 and a 240W £13-15. With the 240W @10Gbps data rate over the 60+100W @480mbps. A higher power through seems not to be the feature that adds too much cost. 100w cables are perhaps the sweet spot for future proofing as there isn't too much that goes above that unless one is looking for the increased data capacity (which frankly most aren't) .

    • @brodymiller9299
      @brodymiller9299 6 днів тому

      @ I was commenting that there is a reason to go for a high powered (100w or 240w) but not go for high speed, as the extra data lines and RF shieding make it thicker and stiffer, making them more annoying.
      Also, 100w is now an outdated standard, and they are not certifying new 100w cables. 240w generally involves just a small change to the connector circuitry, which almost all brands have done.

    This is a good breakdown.
    I have been a long time user of Anker products, but Anker has a problem of making 10 products that do the same thing slightly different with no way of differentiating between them. Even the names mentioned aren't on their website or amazon store. Some have numbers, some have names like "powerline" and some just have adjectives like "new nylon".

    Excellent review. I've been using Anker products for many years and they all still work perfectly. These include USB-C to A cables (PowerLine+), 5in1 usb-c hub, Soundcore bluetooth speaker, Powercore 20k mAh battery bank with fast charger, and the Roav DashCam duo. I just recommended the nano cable to a friend.

    Those Anker Nano charging bricks are awesome. I keep one in my business bag, a couple in my truck, and one in each room of the house. They charge amazingly fast and don’t get blazing hot like some bricks.

    Although I absolutely love how the use of USB-C is becoming more and more widespread, I'm also really sorry to see the impact it is having on pricing for something as simple as a charging cable. Up to $26 for 1 meter/3ft of cable that will do a measly 240w, compared to regular old lamp cord that will do 3000w at $1 pr meter/3ft is absolutely crazy! Especially considering that the USB-cable will be entirely worthless without a USB-C charger to plug it into - a charger which will probably run you at least another $50-$100 by the time you skip over the obvious fire hazard, generic name brands.
    We're all paying the USB tax these days... 😞

    Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love Anker chargers and cables. But I have experienced four cables fail in the last year. I only use either the Apple chargers or the Anker ones. I am against buying other brands. But these cables failing is not settling well with me. What I am experiencing is the cable causes the device to renegotiate the charge settings. I have tested the same cable on a different device and it still does the same. Then I cut it up and get out another Anker cable.

    it's an anker plug that misses the basic fact: people don't want to mess around with a separate cable for charging AND a separate cable for data transfer. However, the 'review' for the 'Best USB-C Cable' says not a single word about those anker cables data transfer speed. And if you go to anker site, the product pages for those particular cables say NOTHING about the speed, but they waffle about number of times you can bend it, charging wattage, temperature resistance ('extreme') and sustainability. So, presume they're ALL just usb 2.0 speed cables, i.e. with VERY slow transfer rate (and, in fact, you can expect nothing like 'up to 480Mb/s' for USB 2.0, more realistically, 50 - 120 Mb/s for data transfer. Anker DO make 'faster rate cables', but people need to be very careful, because Anker use weasel wording, like 'Ultra-Fast File Transfer' which actually means... usb 2.0. They also use other weasel wording, such as 'High-Speed Compatible'. You think it's about the data speed, but nosir, this is high-speed CHARGING. Which is indeed, 'hig-speed'. But I'm absolutely sure they do it on purpose.
    If you want a cable with 'high speed transfer rate', i.e. FASTER THAN usb 2.0 standard, then look for usb 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, or usb 4 cables (or thunderbolt, which is usb 4.0, but with extra specs) which, practically always, are 50 - 300% costlier than those anker charging cables. And before you spend that extra money, make DOUBLE sure the speed claim is verifiable, because hundreds of Chinese 'one-night brands' slap whatever wording brings in most orders, without providing the promised performance. Also, bear in mind, that higher speed (usb3 and up) cables tend to be thicker and stiffer. This doesn't make a thick cable genuine, but it's important when you expect such a cable to be as flexible as the 'flow' anker cables - it won't be. And there's reason for stiffness of genuine cables, you can watch youtube on what's inside a super-expensive apple cables, and why it is there.
    And last, there's no point buying a higher speed usb cable, if your hardware does NOT support it. Practically all cell phones these days use usb-c port for data and charging, but only a (small) minority of those phones feed / receive data at usb 3.0 or higher speeds. Even your latest apple models, unless they're in the pro / max category, only give you usb 2.0. speed.

    Not mentioned is their "Anker 543" cable which supports 240 Watts, coming in at 3 feet for $12, 6 feet for $14, and 10 feet for $17.
    Seems to me to be better bang for buck, especially the 10 foot version. However, it is only rated for 10,000 bends.

    The best USB type-c is just to avoid it, it isn't a cable, it doesn't even have standard pin-out. its just a con to make you buy more adapters, and of course the adapters don't work because the cable isn't universal. It is just a style of connector that does not implement any USB protocol, common to several technologies while mandating non of them.

    Love the Anker cables in general - I have easily a dozen of these cables. That said, Native Union makes a 240v Cable with wicked fast data transfer as well…and it sports a dual tip on one end that does lightning and USB-C. I will also point out that it has a leather cable wrap, which is very nice.

      Apologies! Oversight on my part. The first 3 are very flexible. The Prime is slightly more stiff because of the extra protections in the cable. But overall, they’re all on the more flexible side.

    Man I spent two hours wading through shit for the 20th time in the past umpteenth years for a new USB cable trying to find out what cable isn't going to crap out, lose data speed or connection or flat out break after a few months to a year.
    So sick of this cowboy market.
    I believe I ended up on an older Anker Powerline which looks a lot like the flow here. It's rated for 5000 bends (frankly I've been ignoring these numbers and fishing testimonials/reviews) and states it's reinforced with Aramid fibre (whatever). It's particularly thick.
    This wasn't for charging, rather I wanted a 3m cable for a PS5 controller to PC connection to play games from my sofa.
    No idea if this was a good choice.
    Ironically the longest lasting cables I've ever had are the old cables I had bundled with Samsung Galaxy's from back as far as 2017. They felt decidedly unremarkable but have never died. They're just too short for this use case.

    Can someone confirm that 240W cable can fry phone battery?

    • @bk99911
      @bk99911 15 днів тому

      No, your phone (the host device) controls the charging speed. So for instance the iPhone 16 supports a max of 45w charging, so even if you use a 240w charger and cable a iPhone 16 will only charge at a max of 45w.
      Having said that, constantly using fast charging like 45w tends to stress the battery and reduce long term battery life. I mostly use just a 5w charger when I charge my phone overnight, only seldom using high speed charging if I need a quick charge before running out the door.
