    I moved from a suburbs area to a country/farmland area last year, and I love how your videos help everyone easily understand how to better their own pieces of land.

    Thanks for sharing with us. It really is important to see how our lands were cleared and maintained to make the wonderful farms we see. Stay safe and keep up the great work. Fred.

    I have a field that I'd like to plant with a winter hay crop. How can I go about preparing the ground and planting without a tractor?

      Yes, most of the tunes on the FHC Show, are available for purchase and download on a number of fine online music outlets like iTunes and Amazon Music, music.apple.com/us/album/homemade/1213324248
      You can find out more about the music (behind the scenes stuff) here: www.farmhandscompanion.com/the_farm_hands_companion_show/the_music_of_the_farm_hands_companion_show.html

    We are trying to turn our alfalfa field into pasture. When do weeds go to seed or when do you try to kill them before they seed?

    • @farmhandscompanion
      @farmhandscompanion  Рік тому +1

      With the exception of a few spring weeds, most of the weeds go to seed in late summer to fall. But for any weed the best time to "top" 'em (or kill 'em) is before they flower (the flowers have the seed in 'em, which are usually fully developed once the flowers are naturally fading).

    I have an 83 year old friend helping to clear. I don't have the strength to do all the left over wood and branches left by the loggers. My friend puts me to shame! Hoping to get goats before all the stickers grow back in!

    What would be a typical timeframe from tree removal to grazing pasture?

    • @farmhandscompanion
      @farmhandscompanion  Рік тому +2

      I would say that it happens in about 4 years, M. H. Ploni; but it's more of an incremental thing progression. In one year you would see the most broadleaf weeds and the least grass (perhaps a small smattering). The 2nd year, more grass, and then perhaps less broadleaf weeds if you stay on top of 'em. And then the 3rd year, perhaps enough grass for the livestock to do slightly more serious grazing with then a smattering of weeds. The 4th year is when the efficiency in grazing begins to be more significant.

      Which year did you put your livestock on the newly cleared land? Im wondering because I have new land I need to clear and work with for pasture. Say about 4 ares to clear for pasture.
