Hi everyone!! I'm back with another video, this time trying to speak in Japanese again. Disclaimer: I make a lot of mistakes and didn't correct all of them; I still struggle a lot with speaking, but I hope that making videos like this might help improve my skills. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy this video and let me know if you want to see anything in particular on my channel!
This was very fun to watch! Your Japanese is really good. When you get to the intermediate level it can be hard sometimes to see your progress because you already know so much that learning additional 50 words doesn't even seem to make a difference. It's all about consistency and patience. Looking forward to more vlogs :D
Thank you! Yes, although I know I have improved in the past few months, it's really difficult to feel like I have made any progress because I constantly feel like there's so much I don't know lol
Great job, Shelby! My family is also Japanese American and I hope my daughter who is only 4 at the moment can grow up speaking Japanese as good as you.
Aww thank you so much! I hope your daughter will come to be able to speak Japanese as well because I think it has enriched my life a lot, and I hope it does the same for her ❤
I totally understand your feeling when it comes to this. It's been exactly 2 years that I have moved to Japan. I work in an English environment here so mainly my practice is going to the bar across the street from my apartment and chatting with strangers who are 98% japanese . Because I'm asian (not japanese descent), many are shocked when I said I'm Canadian ( I'm sure you get a similar reaction from japanese people whom you talk to ). I did, however, and interview for a large American company (which I worked for in Canada) but here in Japan, and that's when I realized my japanese is still no where near good enough. I'm definitely gonna look for that book you showcased.
Whenever I go shopping or a restaurant or coffee shop in Japan, even though I understand what they are saying and don't have any problems, I still have anxiety when I have to open my mouth. Hopefully, that goes away one day. Good luck to you! What helped me get better at speaking Japanese was language exchanges (meetup events). It's not for everyone, but I think it's an excellent way to practice and possibly make friends!
I completely understand, I always get anxious too. With time and practice, we can overcome it :) And thank you for the suggestion, maybe I'll try it out!
Wow! I really love these videos. I moved to Japan a year ago and passed the N5 and now this year I hope to pass the N4. I enjoy listening to your Japanese. It helps me practice my listening and speaking. I want to make videos like you but for myself!
i'm currently learing japanese it's been a year and a half since i started from literally zero i didn't even know what ありがとう meant, i started using the same method i used in learing english which's just unconscious learning i just liked watching movies with time i started to translate words and without knowing it i knew english but if you asked me about grammer i probably wouldn't know why a pertcular sentece works a certain way i just knew that it is natrual this way and that is unconscious learning. i'm doing the same thing right now in japanese and i'm going great but i don't really bother speaking the language enough i just know when i start to understand a lot the speaking will come along (just like what happened with me in english XD) so it's mostly about listening. so that's my own journey. good luck with yours ;)
i just saw ur old "speaking only Japanese for 24 hours" video and saw this next! Congrats on moving to Japan! feeling very proud even though ive only seen some videos of urs lol
Really appreciate u adding corrections in edits! Helps the viewers actually learn from ur mistakes. Btw at 2:23 it should be カリフォルニア*は*蒸し暑くない and not で❤
Yay! I loved your Japanese blog and I bet it must be difficult to edit because you have to add subtitles. But, I appreciate it and probably many other Japanese students as well. If you have sometime, share more about your studying routine in a video.
Hello Shelby :) I happened to visit your UA-cam channel after watching Takashi From Japan. I just wanted to say hello and good luck learning Japanese :D hope you can enjoy living in Japan and meet new people 日本語勉強がんばってくださ~い🥰応援してます🌸
I was wondering when you were going to post another one of these! I’ve been watching your previous speaking only japanese vid for awhile so now i have new practice lol
2 роки тому
The style of the video was awesome! Echoing some of the other comments, as someone aspiring to learn Japanese, the subtitles (especially the corrections) and the pacing were incredibly helpful. Virtual shoutout to "TAKASHii from Japan"!
just subscribed! i love ur videos! we’re around the same level but there are some words here and there that i have forgotten or don’t know so i love this!! it’s also v calming and enjoyable🥰🤍頑張ってください。大丈夫なら戻ってください!ゆっくりしてね✨
Your videos are great to watch as a beginner, I can catch a decent amount but am challenged at the same time. Although I’m sure your level will begin to increase dramatically with your immersion now. You're also inspiring because learning in such a public way is terrifying to me, but ultimately necessary. Do you feel additional pressure in Japan since people assume you should be fluent? It seems like it would be harder than for anyone more easily recognizable as a foreigner.
Yes! I notice that when I'm with my "visibly foreign" friends, they get English menus and the staff speaks slower, whereas when I go places alone, they assume I'm Japanese and speak really fast. It's challenging, but once I speak usually they realize I am not from here and slow down which is nice 😄
I started japanese in 2020, I could understand you all, even the mistakes! The only thing is that I haven't output japanese at all, only reading and listening. I'm planning to go to Japan next year.
@@ToMaSsS10 I don't think they do, but I used it because I didn't have the vocabulary at the time and I was just trying to get the message across lolol
Even if you're American the fact that you have japanese heritage probably makes you look less intimidating to approach than say a white guy like me. I would embrace it. You'll probably have an easier experience than a lot of foreigners coming to japan.
Easier in the sense that I blend into society, but harder in the sense that since I look Japanese, I am expected to know the language and customs. So when I make a mistake, sometimes people aren't as forgiving as they would be with a non-asian foreigner.
I was going to subscribe to your channel, so that I could comment later. Then I scrolled down and realized that I already had subscribed! Anyway, that guy was hitting on you. I don't blame him! Obviously your beauty drew him out of his shell, and he had to take a chance. As for the video, when I left Japan, my beginners Japanese was good (bad), and now it is worse, lol!
Yeah! You made kitsuneudon. 😊 一番好きな食べ物です。Try it with shichimi spice next time. Oh, and finely chopped spring onion. Sometimes the dashi can be a bit weak, so that can really affect the taste.
素晴らしい. Your simple Japanese is useful for beginners like me  I was wondering how has your learning method changed from when you were in the US. Are you taking language course?
I am attending a language school right now, so my studying is WAY different. Before when I was self-studying, I was not consistent at all, and I didn't study kanji very much. In school, we are learning for 4 hours per day, plus the study time outside of school that I do. There is also a bigger focus on kanji and keigo, which I was not focused on at all before.
@@Shelbyrei That is intensive. I am sure you are making good progress. If you think there are any good resources you can share which someone doing self-study, living in Japan then please do share. Cheers!

Shelby may i ask why they put (~) in a word, for example in this thumbnail video's ua-cam.com/video/y39xRwFlAxE/v-deo.html
Ahh please continue to make videos like this!! It’s so entertaining and it really helps me learn Japanese in an enjoyable way! :)

It's scary, especially when talking to native speakers 🥲 and thank you!

omg yes the heat in japan compared to california is soooooo different japans heat feels like im living in my own headache

hahahah that's me everyday unfortunately
Did you get the flavored inari tofu? It looks like it might've been plain... I've made that mistake before, had very little flavor haha.

They know I'm a foreigner from the way I speak, but they always assume I'm from Korea or China!
Keep working on improving your dashi. I like udon better than ramen for sure.
