No, in the game you are supposed to climb vertical shafts by jumping and spinning. In fact, it's not possible to progress without mastering this ability.
I NEVER beat the first level, but I kinda think I was doing it wrong. I remember fighting an army of Martian tanks, but that's probably doing it the hard way.
