Probally because when you are recording a song you have a lot of layers to record the song so they are in separate channels (like the lead vocal channel, background vocal channel...) so when you don't plug your headphones propperly you only hear one channel that is the background vocals one.
im an audio nerd, and the answer is definitely 100% to do with polarity. basically all audio is encoded onto two channels ("tracks"): one for your right ear and one for your left ear. when you plug the audio jack in halfway, in simple terms, one of the channels is flipped upside down - its polarity is inverted. when you plug the jack in halfway, the wrong signals are sent to the wrong place, and you basically hear a mix of your left ear and the inverted right ear in both sides of your headphones. anything that is the same on the left ear and the right ear will be cancelled out and reduced to silence, so you only hear the differences. anything that is exactly the same on both ears to make it sound like it's coming from the middle (in most cases, the vocals), will be silenced, so you can hear everything else more clearly! this is actually how noise cancelling headphones work on a basic level. you can look up "out of phase stereo" or "phase cancellation" if you wanna read more :)

Can someone explain why we can hear exactly this when the headphones aren’t plugged in all the way?
i had accidentally done something like that 3 years ago and i still wonder why that happens
Probally because when you are recording a song you have a lot of layers to record the song so they are in separate channels (like the lead vocal channel, background vocal channel...) so when you don't plug your headphones propperly you only hear one channel that is the background vocals one.
It's only a theory, i don't know exactly why this happens but this makes sense to me 😅
It's called layering. They purposely drown out some vocals lines to go along with the instrumental.
