Just look at Paul, and the "thorn in his flesh". He prayed for God to take that away, and eventually learned about the blessing he had in his own weakness and suffering.
But God is merciful and gracious to heal when He chooses to, not always when we choose to be healed. God is merciful and gracious when he says "no" or "wait" as a responce requests for healing in prayer. Because he will do everything that is good for us. Yes, even when giving us sickness, allowing injuries, and even life long disabilities.
