I often see people suggest Italy immediately joining the central powers would secure the schieflenn plans success but it took Italy over a month to mobilise and send just 200,000 troops to the border in our timeline. Given how terrible they performed I don't see them pinning down much French divisions.
Well it isn’t just pinning down French divisions. It is also relieving numerous Austrian divisions. Plus the extra navy would help the central powers dominate the Mediterranean
Central Power lost a year trying to beat Italy and Romania. If Germany attack Romania first, when Russia capitulaiting in the early 1917. And this means what Germany and Austria-Hungarny have a much bigger time to strike on France and Italy. And Italy is the second front for the France. And France didn't have much reservs to defence in the Alps.
@@randomdudeoti the central powers are not going to dominate the Mediterranean, the french fleet alone was larger than the Italian and Austrian fleets combined. Austria/Germany would have to relieve italy in this timeline. Italy would just be absolutely trounced by France, France would crush Italy just to improve morale. Also Austria wasn't operationally outnumbered by much in its battles with Russia. More divisions on the east just means more pows for Russia to capture. It was always German divisions that stopped Russia. More Austrians won't stop them. Besides, Italy was a net food and coal importer, France and the UK were her largest trade partners and Germany wouldn't be able to make up Italy's coal deficit due to man power issues. Italy would have famine conditions by late 1915, combined with the subordination to Germany causing domestic political issues and millitary defeat this would end italies ability to prosecute the war. Furthermore Italian entry could keep the ottomans neutral, or at least delay ottoman entry into the war. The land Italy exquisite in 1912 could be promised to the ottomans to keep neutrality. However given the instant of the pasha's they will probably still join the war against Russia.
@@Крэйден_х i don't understand what you are saying? Germany didn't lose a year fighting Romania or Italy. Germany sent a few divisions in October 1917 to Italy, by this time they already cycled around 80 divisions at pachendale, more than France cycled at Verdun. And France would have the reserves to defend at the alps, a single army could hold out in the Alps on defense. Italy couldn't attack with more than 300,000 in the battles at the isonzo. Given France was more competent than Austria, this would pin down just 100,000-150,000 french troops.
@@williamthebonquerer9181I disagree. If Italy joined the Austrians would be able to send more units to Russia which might end them faster. And also in that period there was no chance France would crush Italy. They would never divert that many forces to the western front and they had to little equipment to produce more. The extra front would be crushing to their morale. Sure Italy would not be able to break French line but it would force France to defend the boarder, and it would also allow Italy to make attack in cohesion with Germany to apply more pressure on France
