- Part 1 of 2 of The Moonstone by Wilkie COLLINS (1824 - 1889). Unabridged audiobook. Detective fiction/mystery. FAB
The story concerns a young woman called Rachel Verinder who inherits a large Indian diamond, the Moonstone, on her eighteenth birthday.
The book is widely regarded as the precursor of the modern mystery and suspense novels.
T. S. Eliot called it 'the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels'. It contains a number of ideas which became common tropes of the genre: a large number of suspects, red herrings, a crime being investigated by talented amateurs who happen to be present when it is committed, and two police officers who exemplify respectively the 'local bungler' and the skilled, professional, Scotland Yard detective.

I can visualize everything so fine is the detailed writing and so clear the diction ; a great story , THANK YOU , will listen ( or read ) Robinson Crusoe next , ha ha -
Love Wilkie Collins .. he's my favourite author .
A great book, but this falls apart for the second half when a woman who can't pronounce words correctly, and it seems not even understand what some of them mean, chose to inflict the listener with an unpleasant, and for me an unendurable experience, why she would think it appropriate to offer her reading services is a mystery that maybe only Cuff could fathom. What a shame.
I hate that they allow these butcheries of classics.
Cheers
U mean not the same reader for next part? Should I even bother finishing this part if that is what lies in wait for me?
Thanks for the heads up. Found another version!
I have had to say this before and I must say it again--As an American I teach, in China, international students from at least 30 countries, and love them all. I hate racism and ignorance, so I again say this with all sincerity. The last four parts, read by Kristine Bekere, ruined my listening experience of this enjoyable book. If English is your second language, and you continue to have such a thick accent that is not only hard to understand you but you struggle with your reading, please, please do not read it. I completely respect you for reading, but do it for your own language. I have to miss this entire section out of frustration while trying to listen.
I agree with all, it is nothing to do with racism, that she chose to read for the public boils down to a lack of consideration for others.
You can either buy the book, or check out the other Librivox recording of this novel. (librivox.org/the-moonstone-by-wilkie-collins-version-2/)
Although, this guy talks extremely slow, so it mightn't be any better.
Totally agree. This is not a chinese accent though, it’s indian, I think.
Ouch!!
But.. facts
Spoken like a true racist.

😀😱
I When I lived in India, I saw that trick of putting oil in a child’s hand for them to see someone remotely!

Amazing book! We’re doing our own version of this Collins classic on our channel and we’d love to hear your thoughts! 💛
This last reader is awful. Just awful very hard to follow and unpleasant

I’m not a native speaker, but I would definitely read way better than the last reader . This is not the place where beginners could assert themselves at the expense of the listeners.
You spoiled the whole thing.
And FYI , the idea of audiobooks , the way I understand it , at least, is to give us, no-natives, possibility to listen to different native accents. And for those who are natives - the pleasure to enjoy wonderful books.
I agree completely!

I know these readers are voluteers, but so many books have been ruined by really awful readers.. Bless them for there intent, but dam, please step asside and find other charitable things to do.
Yeah, it's really weird. There are some readers that are fine but most of them just suck the joy right out of it. If you're not good at it, just leave it, can't be that hard.
I’m listening to one of Gesine’s chapters right now, and am finding it maddeningly distracting to hear children screaming in the background. Please, readers, have the good sense go into a closet somewhere, or to re-record the flawed segments. Or just tell the damn kids to shut up.

One of the readers toward the end is terrible lisping and very bad enunciation not a native english speaker with a bad peeping voice and difficulty in speaking english. What a shame for an otherwise remarkable audiobook. Why?

If you've ever watched CNC television you will notice that the Chinese anchors don't bother to learn English,I don't know if the reader is Chinese or Spanish but she should not be making an audiobook

Thanks for trying, but for goodness sake, don't spoil such a wonderful book with such hideous accents!
Spoiled by the female voice. (Though a good actor.) Just doesn't work.
8:20:20. No, you are not condemned to narrate, we are condemned to your narration 👎🏼
This is the most awfull reading I have heard up to date😢
I jumped ahead and I can’t listen to the female narrator, so sadly I won’t be listening to any of the book
Ruined for me when an American woman started reading. I had to stop listening.
