What do you think of this new Aveda line? After seeing the prices of the products..wow...I don't feel like they're worth it considering some of my favorite products are cheaper and last longer. I liked my results but just comparing them to my other products I can't 100% recommend them.
Thanks for reviewing this. I have gone to aveda salons my whole life (36 now) and I do love my aveda. However, I find a lot of it overpriced and overhyped. The only thing that I really can't live without is the be curly primer. The gel is pretty great too. I do love the nutriplenish shampoo but it is very costly. Overall, this line is fine for me but is not feasible for the average consumer.
Honestly, if I can't buy products at Ulta or a place like that, I don't get involved. Same with Hairstory. I'd love to try it, but it's mail order and I don't purchase products from Amazon.
I have fine hair with medium density, and I find the Curlsmith creams easly leave my hair over moisturized with stringy and weighed down hair. Even when I barely use any at all. I can use other brands of curl creams and don't have that problem. Some of my favorites are the Twist Weather Up Lotion, Hask Curl Defining Cream and Zotos All About Curls Bouncy Cream.
As someone living abroad in Asia, I really appreciate Aveda products because they are the only ones available locally here. They do cost more than other brands for sure, but even if I buy cheaper brands, I still have to pay extra to have them shipped abroad (plus duty and taxes). It's interesting what you said about the fragrance, because I find them to be much lighter than brands like Curlsmith. I have also noticed that Aveda products have a stronger scent when you first get them, but after opening and using a few times, it really dissipates. I never smell the products in my hair next day. With Curlsmith the smell follows me for days. I find the nutriplenish deep shampoo to be quite gentle. And the leave in conditioner spray makes a great refresh spray!
I didn’t always have low density. I had extremely high density until I hit my early 20s. PCOS, Keratin treatments, Japanese Hair Straightening treatments…all to tame my curly hair. I think if I wouldn’t have done that, although I had PCOS, I would be at least medium density. Since going through my curly hair journey, I’ve noticed that I have so much hair growth. I’m hoping that it will be a mediumish density. I know that I’m 42, so I can’t expect miracles LOL, but at least it looks much better than before. Thank you Gena for all your tips. 😍😍
Your tips for covering thin spots are amazing! I've also been using the Curlsmith hair growth oils, but not the vitamins. It's been only a month, and I'm seeing a difference. I hope they work as well for you as they are for me! Also, I want to thank you! My natural hair journey started 3 months ago and the advice and tips you have given have been so helpful. It feels good to actually love my hair! So thank you again for helping me along my curly hair journey! ❤
If only I could have Gena with me when I style... 🤩😊 My hair is very similar to yours but I have somewhat of a looser curl pattern, I have 2c & 3a curls. I have always applied my stylers & styled upside down. I feel like I get more curls that way, EXCEPT for my roots. I always have a hard time with them. I am going to try upright styling today when I wash, after 15ish years of doing it the same way, fingers crossed! 🤞🏻 Thanks for your tips, Gena! 🥰
By the way: I just saw your update on your bloodwork, so glad to know you have an answer now! You may want to think about adding some vitamin C alongside your iron, as vitamin C assists with iron absorption. You could do this by drinking or eating citrus (like drinking orange juice for example) or take a vitamin C supplement separately. You could also try slower absorption iron supplements if you find you're having any GI issues. They're usually lower in concentration and a lot easier on the body!
Aveda's botanical repair line is also silicone free, and has the same bond building ingredients that curlsmith uses. They have a leave in treatment in that line that's wonderful!
@@GenaMarie They also have a "light" and "intense" mask in the botanical repair line, and I just tried the light mask tonight (I had a few travel sizes of everything and hadn't tried the mask until tonight) and it's great too! I'm going to have to buy the full size of the mask & leave in treatment 💜
Thanks for the update on your bloodwork. I found you a week ago and I absolutely appreciate how detailed and thorough you are. I'll be bing watching you this week
For the question at 10:05 about lightweight protein-containing stylers--my favorite is Curls Blueberry Bliss leave-in conditioner. On my hair (fine, medium density 2c-3a), it gives both softness and curl enhancement without weighing it down.
I haven't found a cream I like with protein but CHI's InfraGel, and BioSilk Rock Hard Gelee both have silk proteins. TreLuxe Hi Definition Gel, and I believe their Reflex Serum have a small protein too, I am pretty sure its silk, but it could be amino acids. I have low porosity hair and it likes silk or smaller proteins.
I used a different styling brush with the teeth much closer and the results were great!! Less scalp showing and more volume!! Thank you for all the helpful tips!
That nutriplenish leave in is one of my favs! It's perfect for fine hair or anyone who gets over moisturized easily. (Like me) it's the only product in that line that I've tried because it's the only one without coconut oil
i just bought the curl gelee. i like your video - full of a lot of information. I have fine, low density hair. I also have long bangs - to my upper lip-ish. I struggle with what to do with these. no videos cover the bangs. Thanks!
Be me that bought some Aveda trial size products to try today lol! How timely! Also, I'm 3 weeks into transitioning to my curly hair and your videos have been the most helpful ones, as my hair is similar to yours. Thanks for being so willing to teach and experiment for the sake of providing good information!
I have pretty much half of your hair. The only way I can get lift at all is when I style it upside down. Been doing derma needling on my thin areas and it’s been helping quite a bit.
OMG! Thank you!! I love your videos because your go through every details!! I love to hear advices from curlfriends that have the same type hair like me! Very helpful!! Hugs from PR! 🥰
Hi Gina, Thank you for all your blog posts and videos; I watch many different curly hair videos, but I get the most information and help from yours! Some questions: 1. Do you think a detangler brush is necessary for hair (2a-2b) that is about chin length? My hair usually doesn't seem to tangle. 2. What do you think of the relatively new line (I think) from Kristin Ess? 3. I find that changing up shampoo/conditioner every so often works better than continuous use of the same ones - is that something you do (other than because you "test-drive" products)? 4. If I finger curl when my hair is wet, it usually doesn't work well; the curls don't seem curlier - could I be doing something wrong with such a simple process? Is a curly hair brush helpful? 5. Your make-up always looks so perfect; is it possible for you to divert and do a video on make-up application? Thanks for considering these questions!
I also have low iron and low density hair. I did a fair bit of research to find out why I was low in iron as I eat a lot of legumes, leafy greens etc. I found out that tannins in tea and coffee inhibit iron absorption. I was an avid tea drinker! It recommended not to drink tea or coffee for an hour after eating so that iron absorption isn't inhibited. Its recommended not more than 4 cups of tea and not straight after meals. Hope this helps!
@@GenaMarie Just to clarify I meant tea or coffee shouldn't be drunk straight after meals because of iron inhibiting tannins. There's also some tannin in kombucha so I've reduced kombucha drinking too.
I’m glad I found someone with thin hair like mine. Do you ever use a root spray to cover your scalp? I do because it helps so much to make my hair look thicker. I just worry and it’s bad for my scalp? What do you think?
I haven't really tried any other than using some eyeshadow around my hairline sometimes. I would just be sure to clarify so its not clogging your pores. Also, check to see if it has silicone if that's something you don't use.
@@GenaMarie I used eye shadow for years too! Just have so many bare spots now-68 years old-that I have had to go to greater lengths. Good idea about clarifying! Thanks!
Glad your blood work gave some answers. I struggle with low Ferritin too. Need at least to be at 70 for less shedding and healthy growth. What Iron supplement are you taking? I have tried so many and still have not been that successful with raising my Ferritin levels. Hope your levels raise soon, but your hair always looks so good! Higher levels give more energy too! Your videos are so informative, thank you. I too have been shedding like crazy it started last August and a blood test in October said I had low ferritin so I've been taking iron supplements since then because subsequent blood tests showed that my levels were slowly rising but still weren't normal. I'm being referred to a Haematologist because my RBC's are enlarged too. I'm still waiting for a call back but in the meantime, the hair shedding has been off the charts since August not to mention the quality of my hair has changed, it's much more dull and frizzy and it's developing knots at the ends whuch I've had to cut out, a problem I've never had before. My 3b curls aren't forming like they used to and I've noticed it holds onto water like soaking wet more so maybe it's become more porous but then it feels really dry once dry . I've switched products, changed techniques nothing has helped because it's an internal issue. It's really freaking me out because I've always had a ton of hair and now I'm seeing my part get wider whereas before you could barely see it 😭. I also eat well so I suspect it's due to heavy menstruation. It just sucks that even if you take really good care of yourself, you can still have an issue.
Yes, same with me! My hair is the same way too, very porous even though its healthy now and no longer has heat or bleach damage. I suspect it is from the low iron. Hoping for an improvement soon 🙏🏼
👍👍👍👏👏👏 on getting the blood work done!!! Except for taking iron supplements, you may consider enriching your diet with vitamin C (as a helper) as well as iron rich foods, such as legumes, spinach, eggs and nuts. Kiwi has both 😁 🙏🙏🙏 For all your tips and tricks! ...and I'm not buying any new products any time soon lol... Too many already 😂🤣
Gena, be aware that biotin in your hair vitamins can give a skewed result in your thyroid panel. It can make a low thyroid condition look normal. I learned this online while I was taking hair vitamins. Please read up on this before your next bloodwork. I will be sure to stop any biotin a few weeks before my next lab work. My doc was not aware of this!
I had my thyroid levels rechecked this week after being off the Curlsmith supplements for a month and the thyroid levels were also normal this time so they didn’t interfere 😊
I’ve talked about in my video about preventing breakage! It helps reduce tangles because shampooing just mats up the hair worse. It’s so much easier to shampoo your hair when it’s not tangled and has some slip. If you have high porosity hair it’s game changing! 🙌🏼
@@GenaMarie ohhh hmmm.... but i thought you have to use shampoo to help moisturize your hair after shampoo clarifies/cleans put all the dirt? I have similar if not the same hair as yours. I feel ever since I Been natural I been shedding like crazy. I curly headed girls shed alot but man I feel it's too weak sometimes.
I find that Curlsmith products increase the amount of hair that sheds from my head, in an alarming way. When I switched products, I noticed a difference right away in the amount of hair that fell from my head. I'm not sure if anyone else has had this issue.
Yes definitely. It’s just I took the Curlsmith vitamins for like 2 months and my nails were still very thin, but growing quickly! Now I’m just hoping after adding the iron supplements they’ll get thicker after they grow out. 💕
Gena, I know your bloodwork was good, but I think your thyroid is enlarged. Did your doctor feel your throat? If you go back to the video you uploaded around September 12, you can see two swollen areas at the base of your throat, especially when you tilt your head back around 7:20.
I have an iron deficiency as well, and believe me, when the iron level goes up your nails and hair become sooo much better My nails are suddenly growing long and my hair has gotten so much fuller, so just wait girl, in a few months it’s going to be 🤌🏻 chef’s kiss

Low density , thin/fine hair... my problem is no volume now that it's basically long past bra strap. I can get a little but not like how I wan lt and I shed a lot. I feel ever since I Been natural I been shedding like crazy. I curly headed girls shed alot but man I feel it's too weak sometimes.
@@stephaniestroupe I'll have to check out her video on this and try it one day soon. And see if I see a difference. Always like to experiment.
I either use conditioner again after or go straight to a deep conditioning mask to replenish moisture
I find that Curlsmith products increase the amount of hair that sheds from my head, in an alarming way. When I switched products, I noticed a difference right away in the amount of hair that fell from my head. I'm not sure if anyone else has had this issue.
Interesting 🤔 Are you sensitive to fragrance or allergic to some type of ingredient
I don’t think you’ll stop seeing nail peeling until new nail growth has a chance to be the max. Just a guess.
Yes definitely. It’s just I took the Curlsmith vitamins for like 2 months and my nails were still very thin, but growing quickly! Now I’m just hoping after adding the iron supplements they’ll get thicker after they grow out. 💕
I have bad shedding 2 months after covid
Gena, I know your bloodwork was good, but I think your thyroid is enlarged. Did your doctor feel your throat? If you go back to the video you uploaded around September 12, you can see two swollen areas at the base of your throat, especially when you tilt your head back around 7:20.
Yes, she did check it and ran the tests. I can ask about it again
👍👍👍👍👍👍🇸🇦🇸🇦
I have an iron deficiency as well, and believe me, when the iron level goes up your nails and hair become sooo much better
My nails are suddenly growing long and my hair has gotten so much fuller, so just wait girl, in a few months it’s going to be 🤌🏻 chef’s kiss
Wow i hope so!
