Afternoon James👍😊. I have a 12kw Thermotec ASHP and can’t rate it highly enough. Since the start of the cold weather it’s cost me circa £5 per week to keep my 2,500 gallon pond at 18 degrees (under polycarbonate covers) which I think is very reasonable👍😊. If there are cheaper alternatives then they will be a real bonus to the koi community but I haven’t come across anything that is as robust and reliable as an ASHP yet. I look forward to seeing what you end up with👍🐟🈲😊
Hi James love the channel I don't no that much about heating koi ponds but I do remember when you put the 2 round heaters in your old pond I bought the same ones I don't use them all the time only when it's realy cold anyway the heaters they use today have a butcher's at Telford koi wrighty and few others they all have these heaters and the swear by them so if your thinking about heating your have a look it might give you some ideas good luck m8 love the pond and a thumbs up to the channel
James you will have to cover the pond and or sliding windows round it or you will just be heating the garden them showers will also need to be in side it as they will be a huge heat loss and the front window will need to be covered its a huge expense but hay ho in for a penny in for a pound the chart hear says 2500 gallons well rapped up keeping a temp of 14 - 16 over 6 months of winter about £75 to £85 a month on gas at today price it comes in about the same as heating your house
Hi, thank you enjoy the video reference heat in your koi pond, I’m looking to add gas boiler to my koi pond, how did it work out? What are the dues and don’ts, please ?
You will wonder why you never heated before now. Its expensive but in my opinion well worth it. It keeps the water staple, avoiding the temp dips that koi are not keen on. Better growth as well. Hope your idea works out . Yvonne
James I’m sure you know who I am and forget anything that’s been said in jest and in a funny way as I’m sure you know that it’s all banter 🤷🏼♂️ I’m like Rasta and gas heated…. I paid £30 for a 6 months old combi boiler ( which I can get easily if your interested ) £75 for a heat exchanger that would heat a huge pool and about £30 for fittings inside my filter house…. Spent probably £300 max with everything including the supply pipe and connection…. I’m at a constant 24 degrees and that is around £50 a month… so that’s about £250 max per year to do that…. If you go Air source it’s let’s say £1500 for the unit plus fitting etc so say £1600+ and say around the same price to run within a few quid….. plus I never get a problem with a boiler just like you don’t with your house!!! No brainer I say as you’ve already got a gas pipe ran to your filter house….. Hope this advice may help or may not? Either way you’ll do what you think but gas will save you money with no massive up front layout 🤷🏼♂️👍🏻

Hi James looking the hammer mate, could you not put air source to the right of your gate, in place of the planter and run the pipes below ground into pump house?
I bought a remora 6kw air source heat pump installing it this weekend james looks the hammer! will do a youtube vid when its all done. its only a £200 more than this one your looking at but its big unit!
I'm a gas engineer by trade so naturally I fitted a gas boiler to mine. Mines heated all winter to 24C and I'm pleasantly surprised that it's not too expensive. I've used a stainless steel pool heat exchanger and a swimming pool stat. Works a treat. 3000 gallon above ground pond.
As your stuck for space I'd say you've come up with the best alternative although I've never seen the exchanger that your looking at but it looks very fancy and can't see any reason why it wouldn't work 👍
Have a look at a iboost system. Never seen one on a Koi pond and would need solar panels on pond roof to power it. Heats water through a immersion heater. If it did work would be free power. Not sure if it would get you up to 18 degrees though. Had various reports at work that some customers only use the iboost for hot water. These are small flats though with 210litre cylinders. Difference is though you will not be drawing off hot water. You would be losing heat, but that different.
Like I suggested while you were building heat it via a ss coil from your existing boiler (this is how I do it). I’ve got it in my large bio with a extra large air stone under it , works a treat.
My crazy idea for the summer, I'm going to run a coil of pipe through my compost heap and use that heat to add some warmth to the pond haha. May not work but it's something to do !!
@@bobcharlie7982 the compost his a fare size, but I'll only know if it works once I've done it, I'm not intending to heat the pond exactly, just maybe keep it above freezing, it's done fine with no heater at all for the last 12 years lol. I have two ponds, one small one that feeds the big one, this little project will be feeding the smaller one as that's only 18 inches deep, the big pond is 5ft deep by 15 by 6 so I wouldn't expect that to work on that haha

They will do 1 of 2 other things…. The will either run electric floating heater or aerate the water to keep a hole open in the ice for air or both. People will very often lose fish in our winters. 😞 - My question… I heard you mention about wanting to heat the water for more fish, I am wondering why you feel that way? With cooler water temperatures wouldn’t you just control water quality with food types and quantities? Here I monitor water temps and stop the high protein foods at about 15 degrees or colder and don’t feed at all with less than 10 degrees. I don’t see the link with water temps and number of fish. Please forgive me if I am missing something with that as I know we do have very different conditions. Thanks James.
Yes it’s just most koi dealers are heated so means with my pond temperature I can’t add any more koi untill I can get my pond temperature as close to the koi dealers temperature that’s all

I'm not sure I would put heat directly into a bio filter. In my mind I think you could kill off some of the bacteria because of the extra heat in one area.
