I found a tonne of these yesterday, but hadn't ever seen one before so I didn't pick any for the table. I was just about to start traipsing through a few books to find out what they were - so this was a very well timed upload :). Thanks, great video as always!
As always, well presented and highly educational. I found my first big troop today tucked into some fir trees right by the side of the road whilst our walking the dog: about 100 yards from my front door! Thanks so much for all you do to entertain and inform!
When discerning the deadly Clitocybe Rivulosa (fools funnel) from the Clitocybe Geotropa (troopers funnel) can the following being used to assist identification: 1. The umba (nipple) of a troopers funnel always remains, unlike that of the fools funnel which disappears once it turns convex 2. Fools funnels don't exceed 10cm in diameter, unlike troopers which can get quite big. 3. Fools funnels and Troopers won't occupy the same fairy ring as each other.
I don't know if I have the fools funnel or the real thing. Mines a more distinct funnel. It's not mature like these but LOOKS a lot like them . The first one I decided to touch without gloves🙄
Thank you for such an informative video as I’ve just seen I think it least 40 of these in a circle just off the lake in Southampton old woods going back to pick some thanks again Kev 🍄👍
I have them and they grow like circkle and they so big, l colecked small and bickled them for winter they started to grow in august September in my place so they so beautiful.... Cant wait to eat it
I found a load of what I thought were these guys but August time, do they come up earlier in the season I.e around bolete and chanterelle time?? Only I found some in same pattern same size massive thick white fibery stems but no nipple in the concave cap and the gills were albeit decurrent looked to sinous off into the stipe at the end.. would this be the deadly fools do we think or a delicious troop..... 🤔🤔
I found some last night, was delighted to spit them. Question: I have no kitchen at the moment; can I dry them? Thank you. Desperate to give them a try.
Hi Marlowe, I was studying this mushroom since finding some in the woods near my house, and trying to eliminate any toxic lookalikes. I've come up with the frosty funnel from my book. When using the 12 cm guide you give in your book, I guess that excludes the frosty funnel since they can't get that big? and is 12 cm just the stem, or the whole mushroom, as a minimum?
Thanks for the vid... a new one for me. Found a huge load growing in rings, massive loads of them. Can they be dried?? There are too many to use up all at once.
I cooked them for about 15min and froze them to keep for later. But I would be interested in knowing also... They grow everywhere I look for mushrooms and hunters don't pick them!
More often found in broadleaf woods but it's common to see them in open fields as well. Please note that it's also likely to mistake it for the poisonous Clitocybe phyllophila, (they don't mention that in the video) whose cap can grow up to 12cm.
Hi Marlow. I was told that mushrooms become poisonous if they are exposed to minus temperatures? Assuming that’s not true, judging by what you’ve said here. Can you clarify this please. Thanks!
Wild Food UK I couldn’t find anything on this either. My Mrs came out with this. So I had to ask. Thanks for clearing that up, I’m sure it applies to all mushrooms. Atb
I'm more concerned about mistaking it for Clitocybe phyllophila, which can get up to 12cm in diameter. Please note the colour of the cap when foraging I. geotropa, although the Frosty funnel (C. phyllophila) can look almost identical. The most secure way of distinguishing between the two is the size and diameter of the stem.
The ones in the video are off white, as they have been exposed to freezing weather. However, they are usually white, often pure white. Grow in long lines as on this video, or large fairy rings. Nice eating, and quite easy to find, as most foragers ignore them.

@@heartofdixieprepping4797 You can touch poisonous mushrooms all day without gloves. It's only when you ingest a piece of them you get ill or killed.

@@ladinark1672 yes, I lived! Lol and haven’t seen another since.

i agree verygood eating but riddled with maggts mostly in the stem
We have masses of these near us at the moment and I was wondering whether they were edible. Thanks for the info.

Saw funnel mushrooms in Bourne Woods, Lincs. today. Very white, about 10cm dia.
Stems were quite slender.

I might be missing something - but I’m surprised that Clouded Agaric (clytocbye nebularis) isn’t mentioned as a potential lookalike…
I found some last night, was delighted to spit them. Question: I have no kitchen at the moment; can I dry them?
Thank you. Desperate to give them a try.
Is it only the Trooping Funnel that has the umbo or do some of the funnels have them?

I took a couple yesterday to identitfy - leaving a mass of them behind, and of course I now regret it!

Never heard that one myself. There are plenty that survive a frost that I eat.

What should the size be
@@LISALOO1978 The Trooping funnel's stem is a lot thicker and can get to 15cm height.
Any chance of confusing with paxolus involutas?
They don’t anything alike to be honest. Colour, stem length, overall size are completely different
Is this mushroom hallucinations
Hi can I eat this mushroom?
Yes they are known as good tasting too just don't misidentify
do you only eat shrooms?
Is handling them safe? I just did then washed my hands.
Yes, Trooping Funnels are edible mushrooms
White? More sort of creamy magnolia surely?
