Making GLUE from STYROFOAM and ACETONE

- Today I will make glue from styrofoam and acetone. It doesn't require many ingredients, so you can make it at home! All you need is foam plastic (styrofoam) and acetone. As you know, acetone dissolves styrofoam pretty well. And when you dissolve lots of styrofoam in it, a sticky consistency appears. The glue we got can be used in everyday life!

By The Way, I got the same result as others below. the Styrofoam used was packing around a UPS. The Styrofoam melted as the video shows but all it ever made was a bubble gum type putty and that was it. Not sticky at all. It did not make a honey-like liquid that you got.
I did this, and with great results! I glued tile to the floor and also those fake wood planks that make it look like have wood floors. Thank you for the know how

Y-You do realise it's highly flammable, and is very similar in properties to napalm type b, right? I'd say be careful with that.
@@nsr-ints "properties" does not necessarily mean "composition". Napalm and acetone/polystyrene only share one thing, which is the PS. In napalm B the polymer is used to inhibit the combustion reaction of benzene and octane, giving a slow burn.
Also, a lot of laboratories have close-to-none sources of flames, like stoves or anything, and that's because a lot of things in a lab are flammable, hence reactive.

Make thicker. Apply to both surfaces. Let it get tacky. Stick surfaces together. That is the best way to do this

So how do u save the glue/adhesive? Or is it a 1 time mix & use. I really hate throwing styrofoam away bc it doesn’t breakdown & bad for environment.

Hi, I really like your videos and I have a question about the polystyrene foam you are using because it's different from the one I got. Yours dissolves in to a dense homogeneous liquid with acetone, the one I use become a goo separated from the acetone. Do you know why? Are there different kinds of polystyrene?
I have used gasoline and had a similar result I put it in a jar with a good lid and covered with gasoline with 10 percent ethinol forgot about 2 weeks when I returned it had turned into a varnish like consistency
ive tried this and all i got was white paste that wasnt very sticky....it didnt dissolve into the acetone as shown in the video.. which is what i wanted . iis there a specific type of styrofoam? that dissolves and mixes with acetone..
somehow he's either got super powerful acetone or he's hit the one type of styrofoam that melts as fast as seen in the video. I've tried all kinds of plastics etc all and nothing worked

You need to use gasoline instead if you want glue really strong glue
all i'm getting is a a sort of gum like substance that is not sticky to the touch - so it doesn't hold on to the surface I'm gluing. What could be wrong?

Maybe add PS cups in the mix, let it sit in a ventilated area if it turns like bubblegum after applying and it'll harden after the acetone evaporates.

okay seeing a ton of questions in the comments (not my vid btw) just letting everyone know i think im going to do some expiriments soon and try different materials and ratios and post stuff on my insta, ill comment again if i do! materials i plan on trying are corrugated cardboard (shown in video), thin cardstock cardbord, thin paper (printer paper), newspaper, recycled colored paper (like construction paper), magazine paper (the shiney material yknow) PET PC and HDPE plastics, and the less common LDPE and BOPP plastic materials! let me know if you have any other suggestions for me to try ! 🎉❤
also ratios i want to try would be for example 1:1 acetone and styrofoam weight, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1, 2:3 etc

I think Acetone plus thormocoa mixl is clear solvent instead of petrol plus thormocoal..
when I do this the styrofoam 'dissolves' but doesn't go into solution it just forms a white viscous slime ????
The white viscous slime is the glue. Or what exactly do you mean?

Can the glue be stored for future use?
Actually yes, but over time you will notice that the glue itself has separated from the rest of the acetone. In this case, you can add more foam there.
@@ENANTIO Thank you for your reply. Can you say how this glue compares with other glues, and what if any exceptional properties it may have better than others? For example Gorrilla glue, CA Glue or wood glue
@@alistair4937 This glue is good for paper, carton, wood and plastics. Also, you can try gluing glass. It's not so strong as CA, but good comparing to PVA (polyvinyl acetate glue).
Conclusion: this glue is more like ordinary PVA glue, as it's able to glue paper, cardboard and the like.

My small experiment it does work and I am using, I use petrol instead of acetone ,
Its not only works as glue but water proofing, can even close any kind of leakage on roof and other surface.
I wonder if it's stronger than abs-acetone, i expect it is and probably stinks less.
It is not. It has a 60 psi compressive force resistance. ABS is in the thousands. It isn't even close. (I use ABS glue often. I just coated a scabbard for a sword I made with the ABS glue. Gives a superior coating for protection.)
Remember as a kid putting airplane ( model ) glue on Styrofoam and watching it melt big holes.

can i use this glue STYROFOAM and ACETONE to seal the garden pot holes with another piece plastic ? can it seal and no leaking - good for OUTDOOR not MELTING like hot glue... Or I have to made Glue Styrofoam + gasoline ? thankyou in advance.
this video is BS, I've tried multiple different density Styrofoams and they all breakdown in acetone but they all turn into a white blob that just floats in the acetone , no matter how long i left the styrofoam in the acetone none of them ever turned into the usable clear glue like liquid shown in this video........
And very combustible with toxic fumes

Thank you for the question. I recommend you to clean it with metal dish brush. If you don't have it, try to do it with another brush.
Is there any other organic solvent that can dissolve styrofoam?

Yes, there are other organic solvents, but they are flammable too. For examble benzene, toluene. Maybe some of them are not too flammable.

Most of the organic that can dissolve this polymer are flammable so no way, the good thing about it is these organic after just couple of short time even half a day they will never be active as it was before because they evaporate into air and leave the substance sticky as glue like
research napalm. it seems citrus oils are more expensive and harder to find but much safer than acetone, but other than that ONLY use acetone unless ur a professional. i wouldnt reccomend using any thing else that is flammable or could release toxins into the air

As it contains acetone, it can melt the styrofoam. But I guess it won't melt so fast as with pure acetone.
im trying to work w this now and online other people seem to say pure acetone has the best results and its very easy to find pure acetone.
I see someone use thinner 2k (not basic thinner okay take noted)

If you don't have acetone, you can use gasoline or just about any other organic solvent to easily dissolve Styrofoam
Don’t use gasoline, unless you’re trying to make napalm.
